Which prospects are gonna step up to be contenders this year?
I'm thinking Ortiz, Gamboa and Concepcion should all get shots at some major alphabet strap this year.

Re: Which prospects are gonna step up to be contenders this year?
Anthony Peterson, maybe Lamont, if not I might turn on them, enough's enough.

Gamboa, Ortiz, Khan & Kirkland. Does Angulo still count as a prospect or is he already a contender?

I'd say he's still technically a prospect, but his level of competition is pretty high for 14 fights. Good call.

Re: Which prospects are gonna step up to be contenders this year?
I think Ortiz is on a steady track for a shot, fiery Mike Alvarado looks ready for a decent step up.Gamboa could be considered a serious contender soon.....fight by fight I'd say;D:fight:

Re: Which prospects are gonna step up to be contenders this year?
I think Urbano Antillon and Marcos Maidana are already contenders. Maidana has a title fight coming up. As does DeAndre Lattimore

Re: Which prospects are gonna step up to be contenders this year?
He's probably already considered a contender, with only 17 pro fights, he might still qualify as a prospect - Andre Dirrell. I'd bet on him to turn out legit over any of the others, like Kirkland who is getting more hype or Ward, who has the great pedigree. Dirrell beats any SMW right now except Kessler, Bute, and Taylor. Andrade or Bika could give him problems because they are both so strong, tough, and hard hitting. Not that this fight would ever happen, but if Froch were to sign to fight Dirrell, come see me about a sig bet. Easy money for Dirrell.
Khan is a fraud. Accept it. He won't be stepping up anytime soon, except to get put on the canvas.
Gamboa is an accident waiting to happen, but he'll get a belt this year and do well as long as he stays at 125.
Tavoris Cloud should break out this year. He's solid.

Looks like Hes getting a running start this weekend going against everyones favorite lesser gem....Kid Diamond on the Arce/Vic Crab card.Apparently he was set to fight Wes Fergusson and then got the call.Hell of a chance to step up but could be in deep.Looked raggedy in spots last outing vs. Lopez.Love his frame, range and bring it attitude but man he takes some hits he might not need to take and stands tall in spots.Should be a nice go,

Re: Which prospects are gonna step up to be contenders this year?
Ortiz will be a world champion. I thought that as soon as i saw him.
-
Re: Which prospects are gonna step up to be contenders this year?
Victor Ortiz for sure.
I'm very impressed with him.
-
Re: Which prospects are gonna step up to be contenders this year?
Damnit people beat me to Devon Alexander, he's really been taking steps back lately, but that is to be expected when you are managed by Don King. I hope he gets out from under king, or that he gets a shot soon.

We all know Concepcion will be fighting Champ Steven Luevano for the WBO Featherweight belt on May 2, 2009 as undercard of PAC vs. HIT main event...

More reps coming if Concepcion will eventually wins the championship...
Cheers...

Re: Which prospects are gonna step up to be contenders this year?
Id like to see Jhonny Gonzalez and Humberto Soto get the spotlight.
I heard Soto is moving up to 135.
I cant wait to see
Pac vs. Hatton
conception vs. Luevano
Hopefully this event get even more stacked.:)

I'm the biggest Gonzalez fan here, he needs to work his way back up a bit still. 5-0 with 5 KOs in 2008 is a great run on the way back up, unfortunately he was a Solo Boxeo highlighted boxer and Solo Boxeo doesn't exist anymore. He is a Golden Boy fighter so hopefully he can get on some HBO undercards again which is what he needs to do to get a handle on the ladder to the way back up to the top of the division. I really want to see Gonzalez in against Caballero.

Gonzales reminds me of the quiet kid in class who can beat you up.;D
That Penalosa fight set him back quite a bit:(

Caballero vs. J-Gonz will be a good match-up. J-Gonz has good chances since Caballero has some problems dealing with boxers who can match his 6 foot height... J-Gonz is a tall boxer too...

For F**K sake hopefully Andre Ward. It's going on year number 5 and nothing as of yet for the gold medalist from the 2004 olympics.

Ward's fighting for some minor league straps tonight on Showtime. I still think he and Andre Dirrell have been moved along very slowly.
