Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
Guys I'm sorry to harp on about this, but if you're watching in the UK, you have to sit and wonder how this guy is paid for his boxing opinion.
In the last few weeks we've had him say...
Hatton would expose Miguel Cotto - he sighted that as Margarito had done it it proved his point
Jamie Moore deserves a world title shot more than Cornelius Bundrage (he also labelled K9 a bum)
A fight between Chris Arreola and Sam Peter would be crap as neither is exciting.
Enzo Maccarinelli is the man to beat at Cruiserweight
Those are just off the top of my head. He's just made comments about Armenians not being good fighters, but being good at sledging. He said they're good at cricket though. WTF? Bunce is a muppet!
Someone please back me up here...

Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
He is shit on the telly at times, sometimes lots of times. He's much better in written form.

Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
Yeah I'll back you buddy he speaks like he's just a poster on here just spouting his biased uniformed nonsense as if its gospel.
I cant deny I find him quite entertaining to watch at times and his shit does make his shows memorable at least but he really does baffle me sometimes with the opinions he puts forth.
I remember him saying Mayorga beat Mosley for 11 of 12 rounds as well.

Same opinion here. He just sounds like any old poster given a chance to speak on tv instead of typing. He isnt particularly insightful to me though.
He is watchable as he rants and raves like a man about to have a stroke at any moment, but I can only tolerate him in reasonable doses.
He's a bit random, but shows a lot of enthusiasm.

Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
So bias towards British fighters too. If you listened to Bunce and agreed with him, you'd be thinking the Brits have the beating of every nation in every division.

Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
I don't even know who the guy is but I read a few weeks ago on this forum that he visited other forums so thats enough for me!
Plus those comments that he's made in the 1st post by bzkfn are just rediculous!!!

He is biased, no doubt about that. An analyst shouldnt have blinkers on, its not professional IMO.

Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
The thing is though (and I agree he talks some absolute shit at times) who is there that could front a show like this & be interesting in the long breaks between fights. He may chat shit but he keeps it interesting. I think there are guys who have a better reading of the sport like Richie Woodhall but the fact is Bunce is good at keeping us interested even if he does talk shit to do it. Look at the guys on Sky & ITV, I would hazzard that I've heard some of them come out with even stupider statements & they don't do it in an interesting way. I can't stand when I have to put out for a PPV & all I get is some boring old fighters (eg Glenn McRory, Nicky Piper, Jim Watt etc) who are often just as blinded by national ties. & 2 words just to emphasise how bad it can get - JIM ROSENTHAL :-X

I'm sorry but I don't see how spouting shit and making up facts based on his own opinion is interesting. For me, it isn't interesting to see someone pretend to educate joe public about boxing with his own opinion which, based on the list I gave above...bares no resembelance to reality.

Like I said he talks shit & I think it would be good to have someone else on the panel with him on fight nights just so he couldn't simply get away with his ridiculous opinions, but the fact is for me & at least a few other people he is good entertainment. I'm not sure that people necessarily respect his opinion but I've heard some of the much better paid HBO guys come out with some fukkin stupid stuff as well, its just the way of the pundit ;)

Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
ive seen a few UK broadcasts, and im pretty sure that the one guy who always pisses me off is bunce
-
Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
Bunce is pundit not an announcer. He's great for people in the UK that need a cheerleader for their fighters. The thing is UK fighters of late have made noise on their own merit, they don't need an anouncer to sell them to the public. That being said, it happens to a certain extent with guys in all countries. HBO obviously announces to favor their fighter, Teddy Atlas will randomly pic a fighter and go so far as to give them 10-10 rounds when they get knocked down. Bunce is bad though, I feel like I need aspirin everytime he starts ranting. If you are just looking for entertainment, watch a dancing monkey.

But then I'd need to change the channel when I basically have a London cab driver on speed (kind of like a ranting monkey) already entertaining me ;)

That's one helluva high standard to hold our boxing pundits to, although I think the one in the E-Trade ad is much more versatile ;D

He was alright after the Arce: Darchinyan fight. He spoke a lot of sense and was remarkably calm. I suppose I am critical because I follow boxing a fair bit so he doesnt really offer me any insight. I suppose to the armchair fan he is a source of information though and he is lively with it.
Im going to try to stop being so cynical. Please mention Saddo's, Mr Bunce!!

I can't stand him.
He says the most random shit.

Yeah but he still gets a mention!

Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
I like him, a pundit who speaks his true mind.
Though his constant rambling of how awful Tony Thompson is can be annoying after hearing it for the 47th time.

You must know him pretty well Scrap is he a nice bloke off screen?
I get the feeling as a man he must be pretty likeable, and to have a bit of banter with down at the gym.
But I can't take him seriously as a boxing expert, how he got the job is beyond me, I just wish they had some proper knowledgeable experts on.
What about you trainers? Why are no British trainers given any commentary positions seeing as you guys probably know the most about British fighters?

The problem is Bilbo, what knowledgable boxing experts are there in Britain who are also good on tv, I mean Colin Hart is even worse if you've ever seen him. Also trainers won't have the same time to give to broadcasts which is why they only get Richie Woodhall occasionally even though he has some kind of contract with them. I understand a lot of people don't like Bunce, but the fact is Setanta are the only channel giving any kind of decent regular coverage to boxing. I mean Sky have FNFs, but they don't have a show where they discuss what's going on in boxing & if Bunce plays some part in Setanta giving coverage to boxing & trying to get the fights we in the UK wanna see on tv (JMM-Diaz hopefully) than he can talk shit all day long. It would be good if they could get a dancing monkey on the panel though ;D

Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
If he likes a fighter they can do no wrong, but if he does'nt like them or has no intrest in them they are bums. But at least he speaks his mind even though it isnt always right.

Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
Bilbo, Ive known Him years, actually He is a good Kid and was an alright Fighter as an Amatuer. He has been a expert since the age of nine, got an amazing Love for the Sport. Sometime He only listens when He is talking, but make no mistake He knows what He is talking about, most of its a windup half the time. I find Him entertaining because I know Him, wondering what He is coming up with next makes me Laugth ;D

That is with a lot of writers/columnist/journalistetc out there once they get a bit of fame....They seem to forget what ever they write is just their opinion unless they are reporting documented proof.....Steve is no different...He has many god points and some bad ones...You have to take what you like and leave the rest
Agree with it or not it is neither right or wrong....
That is why I come to the forums...to get my arguements as a fan and all my shit talk out with other fans...Again neither right nor wrong but we all love to talk about the game, argue our points etc...Whats helps make the sport so entertaining
-
Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
I like him.
He is a bit loud at times but he says it like he see's it and you cant ask for more than that.
I do admit he say silly things at times but I think he is having a bit of a joke with the fans when he makes outrages statments.
I am supprised that nobody has mentioned him saying that Calzaghe might move up to HW to fight Haye.:o
-
Re: Do people actually respect the opinion of Steve Bunce?
well, he kept calling Arce 'Arse'.;D You can't take that too seriously.
I find him at times both funny and irritating - but that's only because he's on tv and you can't argue with a glass screen:)
I respect the opinions I agree with;)
Now. Steve Holdsworth:cool: Maybe it's the name Steve..
