James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
James DeGale is expecting his professional debut to be a 'walk in the park'.
The Olympic gold medallist makes his bow in the paid ranks against Georgian Vepkhia Tchilaia, on Saturday, February 28, live on Sky Sports.
And although the 23-year-old admitted to Soccer AM that he thought long and hard about turning pro straight after Beijing, he was a little more decisive when it came to calling the fight.
"He (Tchilaia) has had 17 fights, he's won nine of them knocked out five, he's lost eight and I think he's been stopped twice, he said.
"But I've boxed at an extremely high level, at the Olympics, at the Commonwealth Games and all around the world, so it should be a walk in the park!" Sky Sports | Sport News
I hate this guy i hope he gets a shock ko very early in his career! He is so cocky.

agree man, I just can't see him being a good pro, I think he'll avoid Sutherland and probably get chined by a bum

Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
That kind of overconfidence won't do him any favours
-
Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
Not the best attitude to have this early. Reeks of later complacency to me.
-
Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
What is it with young, decorated, British amateur boxers who turn pro with a damn attitude?
We've heard Amir Khan talking his shit - He got a nice leveller to bring him back down to earth by Breidis Prescott
Derek Chisora - Does not know how to conduct himself in an interview and says 'I have nothing to work on - just power shots' and becoming heavyweight world champion soon  Then calls out Audley with the reasoning that it will be a big 'payday'. Hasn't a clue...
Tyson Fury - ''I'm 5 x better than any heavyweight in the world today''. Are you serious?? After one fight?? Then his dad says he would have beaten Foreman and Michael Spinks with ease - AFTER 1 FUCKING FIGHT???
Now James De Gale?
These guys all need to be humbled and realise that they just aren't that good! The pro ranks are a completely different ball game. At least get to 10-15+ pro fights before you start tooting your horn about how you're the best thing since sliced bread.
These guys make themselves sound like tools..I hope that they mature and quickly for their own sake.

Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
not really seen any Degale interviews yet but surprised he has said this . You'd think he'd have seen whats become of Audley and (potentially) Khan hw would keep his mouth shut and put some graft in first
-
Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
Im always amazed at how some amateurs look at going pro as no big difference before even having one fight. Or thinking that just because a fighter has been stopped he doesnt have a good chin. Believe me you feel the punches a lot more as a pro, and this changes your attitude in the way you approach a fight, you cant be overconfident. You cant get away with a lot of the things you could as a amateur. More amateur standouts had a couple pro fights and called it quits, than went on to be champions. The objective is different as a pro. Pro experience is a lot different than amateur experience.

Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
Well i was undecided about De Gale but i think that quote has just made my mind up.
I reckon theres a good bit of new talent come from the olympic squads. A couple that could go all the way,
But i have a gut feeling De Gale is going to have no power what so ever, i may be wrong but i think after watchin the way he punches hes not guna hurt anybody that can take any kind of a shot, and he wont be wearing head gear so who knows if hes even got a chin, hes certainly got a mouth.
People say Calzaghe slapped? It looked like it at times, but thats fukk all compared to DeGale. And he cant even blame countless broken hands for him doin it. I think its cuz hes got so little power its just not worth it in amateur boxing so he addapted that stye for some reason, maybe to reach a little further and score points.
I suppose bein a Brit i should be up for him but if a mans a twat hes a twat and people dont like twats. So i dont like him
-
Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
Agree completely ukansodoff.
Watching him at the olympic's I said to myself, 'This guys style isn't gonna be suited to the pro ranks'
I believe guys like Sutherland and George Groves will make the transition much more readily because they carry power as well as decent boxing ability.
I could be wrong, we'll have to see.
-
Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
I used to know J back in the day when I boxed for a bit at Trojan and he always was a bit cocky, but was still a cool guy. I will root for him because of that,I think he recognizes that most of the hardcore boxing fans have it in for him anyway going by the net so thinks why not just let 'em hate me because they'll still watch. I would like to say he could go all the way, but havin sparred with him when we were teenagers I can't see it, simply because I can't see his power having improved that much. I can understand from that quote though why you guys would think he's a cock
-
Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
De Gale needs to shut the fuck up really annoying person, the guy goes on as if he is the best boxer to lace them up ever, in reality he got a bit lucky at the Olympics not taking anything away from him winning gold is a fabulous feat.
But it was a major shock he was 66/1 pre olympics and some people didnt even think he was the best in the uk, considering Groves beat him in the Aba's in 2006, i dont like him or his style and id bet top doller he doesnt do much in the pro ranks.

Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
I think I just became a bigger Demetrius Andrade fan

That's why I wan't Khan to get fucked up everytime I watch him. All these guys hope they can get rich without even doing fuck all like he has.

Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
It'd be a refreshing change if a decent British amateur turned pro and said something like "my number one objective is to win the British title and we'll see what happens after that." De Gale is getting one and a half million for his first roughly sixteen fights. I expect Warren to keep him well away from anybody remotely dangerous and try and steer him towards a vacant WBO belt, followed by a Sven Ottke-style title reign. That's the best-case scenario for that guy. I'm certain before much longer I'll be dying to see him get sparked every time he fights and from what little I've seen of him I don't think he'll get to legitimate world level.
-
Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
I don't like his attitude but he's a fantastic boxer.. the only bad things I could say about him is he runs away a bit too much for my liking.. if the olympics is anything to go off. He also doesn't seem to have much power, although I suspect that would come gradually as he develops a more pro boxer stlye.
Cocky or not I'll still support him, but that doesn't mean I have to like him. I'd much rather see Frankie Gavin do well.

and this is why we pour scourn on our own kind (sanchez take note)
I really don't know when things changed with this attitude. Actually let's all blame Naz and the Ingle gym;D
Kirkland also summed it up.
It's one thing to maybe think in private you could go to the top, it's another thing to come out and say that when you've never had a professional fight. Because yes, you come off sounding like a dick and a good crowd will turn out to see you get knocked out.

1. For me, the two go hand in hand. I can't see that I would be totally behind someone I thought was an utter tool.
2. Agreed

What price of him getting iced in his debut? I might take it.

Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
What a bunch of bitchy whingers ;D
I don't care if he's cocky (seen it a billion times before). Bear in mind he was a 50/1 dog to win the Olympics.
I hope he does well.

It's not just that he's cocky, but he's thick as shit as well, takes Eubank's comments way to personally and out of context. Any way you're the odds man, what price can I get on the other guy.
-
Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
No prices yet or i would have told you ;D
Thick as shit? Ive seen billions of them too.
What did he say about Eubanks comments?

You know what, he may be cocky but I can you for a fact he's not thick as shit. Don't know about Eubank's comments, but the way they were widely reported was very different than what was actually said

He called Eubank mad, plus some other things. Come to think of it he isn't that way off on Eubank being mad - you'll find his comments on ESB or boxingscene, can't remember which one.
Maybe he is being cocky just to get people to his fights even if he knows they won't like him, either way he's detting himself up for a fall big time.

Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
Eubanks got it spot on with de gale
The kind of guy you dont wanna see get too much too soon and de gale is cockying in it up even before his got going.

I read it. Seems like the response I would expect from him. I think Eubank was a bit out of order with his comments too.
I think DeGale is genuinely cocky. As you say - if he doesn't back it up he'll look a mug. But chances are he will "fail" anyway.
I like the prospect of all these AM guys meeting as pros - Groves, Sutherland, Degale.. sooner see them do well than fail.
Guess for now i'll be DeGales only Saddo supporter ;D

I like the prospect of these fights as well, but they don't always happen, Hatton-Witter, Khan-Thaxton-Murray.
Degale simply hasn't learned from Audley/Khan's mistakes. From his comments he sounds as if he believes that simply turning up to train and going through the motions will get him to the top. Eubank may have been a bit harsh, but I think he was using the words 'guarantee he'll fail' to underline his point about the absolute necessity of having genuine hunger to succeed in the pro ranks. Eubank wasn't attcking Degale's character, only his decision, whereas the reply was quite personal, especially from someone who's yet to prove anything.
Contrast his behaviour with Gavin's, who seems to just want to stay quiet and do his talking in the ring.

Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
Sorry Jaz, misread your post.
So that's Fenster, Jaz, JoeyUK (50/50?) and smashup.
DeGale will have an army at this rate ;D
-
Re: James Degale,my 1st fight will be a walk in the park
Not even trying to be a contrarian or anything but this doesn't do much for me
lets face it most big name amateurs who are being groomed as contenders probably think their first fight is going to be a walk in the park, reason of course being that their promoter will bring in some part time boxer with a mullet. This guy just said it.
Of course I know nothing about this Degale guy except he's got a silly last name, maybe he's gotten on people's nerves before this and this is just adding on.

I'm going to support him too at least until he starts to annoy me. I'm not bothered by the cockiness but he'd better be able to back it up in the ring when he gets moved up in class. If I even see any wobbles (like Khan with Limond and the French welter who floored him) or see him look unconvincing against low level opponents and he's still cocky I'm going to be watching his fights hoping he gets sparked.

Theres just too many questions unanswered about de-gale to suggest he`ll do anything at pro level.
I do believe he has the tempremant for professional boxing and when you make the step up from amateur and take them pads off you need to be somewhat foolhardy which i think degale has in him.
But anyone who saw him take that gold especially with that performance in the final will tell you the guy is far from any kind of finished article and the raw natural ability that the likes of the russian who won gold and a few runner up cubans appear to have doesnt actually seem to be there with james.
Love to be proven wrong, but none of the british medalists will go on to fight at world level only frankie gavin will make a name for himself at pro level because unlike the others he is a naturally gifted lad that can be fine tuned into a really good professional fighter!!

From a british perspective...Degale deserves our support at least. I mean he won our country a rare boxing gold medal and in doing that is helping to promote british boxing. Like I said I don't particularly like him, but he is British and he did do us proud at the olympics so I think he deserves my support.
