Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
Martin Rogan has just knocked out Matt Skelton to become the Heavyweight Commonwealth Champion, just four & a half years after becoming a professional at small shows in town halls in Northern Ireland. As recently as December he was still driving a cab in order to help subsidise his boxing career, just prior to out-pointing Audley Harrison.
It's clear to anyone who sees him that he has little technical skill, & logically he should have at least been beaten by Harrison & Skelton, & possibly those in the Prizefighter tournament. What he has got is an unbelievable will that seems to push him beyond more talented opponents. After each win I tell myself that he's gone as far as he can, & maybe now he finally has, but it really is a true fairy-tale story considering he only put on gloves for the first time in 2001.
Anyway propz to Martin Rogan

I seen this, he looked fukking fantastic. I didn't think I would see the day Matt Skelton get knocked down (It was worth the wait)...but yeah....Rogan done great. I'm glad he knocked out Skelton, Skelton is garbage and plain boring.

Did he say that? I change the channel whenever Sky's pundits are on. Now I just feel like I've lost brain cells if I'm thinking the same things as Johnny Nelson :-\

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
That fight was great!!! (not for the boxing purist) ;D
Two proper hard fuckers.. amazingly Skelton met someone more tougher/determined than him.
Big respect to both

I was just thinking the exact same thing as he was starting to get to Skelton. Only problem for him is where does he go now? I see maybe Danny Williams and he may take Williams too but as soon as he gets someone with lethal power or someone that will fight on the outside for the whole fight in the way Skelton did for the 9th and 10th when he knew it was the only way to win, he'll end up getting beaten quite badly.
But for now I'll just enjoy him. He has brought a breath of fresh air to the Heavyweight scene over here and his fights are all action!

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
You don't have to work for Sky or be a genius to notice there was little technical skill on display ;D
-
Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
Very good fight. He wanted it more, as I was watching it I thought it resembled a poor man's Marciano/Walcott, where the technically better fighter (though Skelton is no world beater) tried to get the brawler out early before being worn out late.

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
I'm sure Audley will feel better at least. My bet is Audley and Skelton will fight and then the winner will get a rematch with Rogan.
Meanwhile they will likely pit Rogan with Prizefighter 2 winner Sam Sexton or motormouth Derek Chisora.

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
IMO Warren should be marketing Rogan to the general public as Rocky Balboa come to life & then try & stick him in the ring with James Toney (ie a recognizable name). If he wins then it could be another step towards getting people back interested in the HW division

Yes but what Warren should do and what he does do are two totally different things. I'm still tying to get over the fact that he's put Khan against Barrera!

Than again so far I think Warren was planning to use Rogan to try & catapult other fighters up the rankings, now he should get on it whilst Rogan's hot & push towards a top heavyweight. Hell I'd love watching Rogan beat the shit out of Tyson Fury if that's possible as well ;D

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
Is Rogan signed to Warren?
You wouldn't have thought it looking at FW's mush afterwards ;D

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
Well done Rogan! I hope he goes and has a nice little career on the back of that. Hopefully he gets a couple of easy defences in the King's Hall and makes a few quid before he's in a tough fight again. I'm guessing Warren has options on him now though.

Oh definitely, they made eye contact after the fight so naturally that means he's tied down for a ten year coontract in Warren's world.

He does appear to be a bit of a cunt when it comes to boxers and their contracts, doesn't he? In America it's illegal for a fighter's promoter to also be his manager.

He is a cunt no doubt, but whose manager is he where he's also the promoter?

I think he manages all his fighters.

He's definitely not Amir Khan's manager & he wasn't Hatton's either, I know that much.

They both had business managers but Warren decided who they fought next.

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
Fair play to Rogan, didn't get to see the fight but thats a huge win for him!

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
the best bit was when after the first knockdown rogans corner were like
"he's fucked,, he's fooooked" lol
-
Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
The best bit was when they ROARED at each other at the end of the 2nd round ;D
Two proper hardnuts ;D

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
Firstly..anyone got a link to this fight they can PM me?
Second.. Rogan is gonna find himself in dreamland today..whats he had 12 fights or close to and look at the position he's in and at 37;)
Huge result for him beating Skelton on Sat and i wonder if he'll start calling Haye out soon?

that was brilliant
Rogan scares the absoloute crap out of me and ive never even been within 500 feet of him!!!
No technical pedigree and no real boxing background, just one tough c*nt that you just know loves inflicting punishment on others!!
I suspect a decent technician will eventually put him in his place, but its still great fun watching a guy like him come from absoloute nowhere to commonwealth champion;D

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
I fooking missed this fight!I was really busy and did'nt have time to watch it let alone back Rogand at the Bookmakers. Its funny how Rogan has always been the under dog but then turns around and shows you exactly whats he made of.I really like Rogan. The amount of fans he's getting is getting bigger and bigger,he's great. He has plenty of heart and he's game to fight anyone anywhere!!Im sooo glad Rogan has done what he has done,,he puts a smile on my face and its exactly what we need in the heavyweights.
Comgratulatione Rogan!
What heart and desire Rogan has got. There should make a film about him,,he is truly ROCKY;)
Love him!;)

Re: Martin Rogan - Is he the real Rocky?
Was searching for a thread like this, as I was just about to roll off on a bout of praise of the man on a new thread.
Martin Rogan must be one of the hardest men ever to grace a British boxing ring, and it is only the consideration of the vast history of British boxing that makes me put "one of the" before the word "hardest".
I must admit that prior to this I was a little worried about Matt Skelton getting on his skates and trying to dance around Rogan as he did to Williams a few years ago. However, Rogan had none of it, and penned him into the corners for much of the fight.
Floyd Mayweather might look at these two fighters, and see prospects for him to come out of retirement for an RJJ-style heavyweight bout, because neither man was stylish nor quick, but in terms of effort and lasting power, they were both in there slugging it out for 10 amazing rounds.
Hearing the interview with Rogie after the fight, and on Buncey's boxing hour later on in the week, I couldn't be more chuffed for him. A true gent, and absolutely the best chin among the heavyweights. Truly, if you could combine the attributes and skills of Audley Harrison with the chin, determination and stamina of Rogan, I imagine we would have ourselves a replacement for Lennox.
I truly hope Rogan can get a few paydays out of this now, and at least make a few defences of his Commonwealth belt, and get a hold of the European belt that Skelton lost, by not retaining his Commonwealth belt.
And hopefully, I'll be in Belfast to see the next step of the dream!

Warren and Sports Network are two seperate companies. Sometimes he has a boxer signed to Frankie as manager and also signed to Sports Network under a promotional deal and vice versa.
He does this with Tv as well so they have contracts with either him or SN so he can sell fights to other networks.
