Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
HOBOKEN, N.J. – The 12-round main event March 14th between 22-year-old lightweight prospect Amir Khan and Hall of Fame bound multiple world champion, “The Baby Faced Assassin” Marco Antonio Barrera, shapes up as a potential classic at The M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom.
Khan (19-1, 15 KOs), 2004 Olympic silver medallist, defends his WBA International lightweight crown against Barrera (65-6, 43 KOs) in a 12-round bout. Barrera, rated No. 1 by the WBO, has already captured the WBO super bantamweight (three times), WBC and IBO featherweight, WBC and IBF super featherweight titles. The Mexican icon has defeated a Who’s Who of contemporary world champions and/or challengers during his sensational 19-year pro career such as Erik Morales (twice), Paulie Ayala, Prince Naseem Hamed, Kevin Kelly, Johnny Tapia, Robbie Peden, Mzonke Fana, and Rocky Juarez (twice)
“The reason I took this fight is because a win here puts me in line to realize my top remaining goal to become the first Mexican-born fighter to win world championships in four separate weight divisions,” Barrera said. “I’ve been world champion in three weight divisions (122, 126 and 130) and my goal is to win a world championship in the lightweight division. I don’t want to wait. I want to get there as fast as I can. A win over Khan puts me right where I want to be.
“I will beat Khan because I have more experience than him and I’m still a much better fighter than he is. Khan is tall and has a good jab and hand speed. He is a good young fighter but there’s nothing he can do between now and March 14 to surpass my skills and experience. Jose Luis Balbuena and Kennedy McKinney are two fighters I successfully defended my WBO super bantamweight titles that I can compare to Khan. They were both good fighters with good hand speed that I was able to defeat. McKinney won an Olympic gold medal. Don’t forget what I did to Prince Naseem Hamed, too, another highly-touted guy with fast hands.”
Integrated Sports is distributing three 12-round championship bouts featured on the “Khan-Barrera” pay-per-view card, presented by Frank Warren, in North America for live viewing at 4 PM/ET – 1 PM/PT on cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, DirecTV and Dish Network in the United States, as well as Viewer’s Choice and Bell TV in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. Veteran blow-by-blow announcer Ian Darke and color analyst, former WBC lightweight champion Jim Watt, will be calling the action from ringside for Sky Box Office and Integrated Sports PPV.
In addition to Khan-Barrera, two other fights will be broadcast on PPV: former WBO cruiserweight title-holder Enzo Maccarinelli (29-2, 22 KOs), the No. 1 contender, battles No. 2 rated and NABO champ Ola “Kryptonite” Afolabi (13-1-3, 5 KOs) for the vacant WBO cruiserweight championship; WBO super middleweight champion Nicky “Cookie” Cook (29-1, 16 KOs) defends his title belt against undefeated No. 1 contender Roman “Rocky” Martinez (21-0-1, 12 KOs).
The Ring No. 6 rated Maccarinelli beat Mohamed Azzaoui, Wayne Braithwaite, Bobby Gunn, Marcelo Fabian Dominguez and Mark Hobson (twice) during his WBO title reign (2006-2008). London-born Afolabi, now living in California, captured the NABO crown last April with a 10th round TKO of previously unbeaten Eric Fields.
Former European champion Cook, rated No. 6 by The Ring, won the WBO super featherweight title via a 12-round unanimous decision in his last fight against Alex Arthur (26-1). NABO super featherweight title-holder Martinez, fighting out of his native Puerto Rico, is rankd WBA No. 9 by The Ring.

Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
Barrera is a lot better than Khan and it will show. Might take a few rounds, but once Barrera warms up and start to land, I can't see Khan lasting it out.

Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
I still don't know who will win this fight. If Barrera wins it was that Amir Khan was a joke. If Amir wins it was because Barrera was in too many wars. Khan is dealing with the double-edged sword no matter what happens. A stupid fight in my opinion and Marco should have retired.
-
Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
At last been waiting for something out of MAB sounds confident and hes not gonna let Khan spoil his goals
KO early or UD points for MAB oooooohhhh wish i was going;D

Any fight Khan has is a dbl edge sword. If he fights a bum he'll get ridiculed. If he fights anyone of merit and does a faceplant within 3 rounds, he'll be ridiculed. I don't think it is such a bad fight for him to take. If he wins he will gain some credibility back, and maybe have a future in boxing. If he gets KTFO, well, time to call it a day.

Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
I think despite recent criticisms and the whole "glass jaw" fiasco, Khan will play it well and pick Barrera off with his jab. I guess all Barrera needs is that one punch to take Khan down but hopefully youth and speed will help him out far greater than Marco thinks.
Khan can box if he wants to, just needs to not try out the Breidis Prescott "run in and hopefully clock him one" routine against a tough ol' Mexican, I think Khan will do it, TKO in the 7th ;)
-
Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
Unless Khan blows him away early with really quick powerful combinations, sometihng Khan does have in his arsenal, hes in trouble.
Thats the only thing that can win him the fight. If he doesnt manage to do that, If Barrera is smart enough to stop Khans onslaught then i dont know what else Khan can throw at him thats going to stop Barrera throwing back, and theres no doubt Barrera has the power to stop Khan.
And we all know how ring smart and experienced Barrera is, we all know the level of opponant hes faced throughout his career, fight after fight of world class opposition.
I just cant see Khan doing it. And neither can MAB

Marquez couldn't stop him. Manny Pac couldn't stop him. And now Amir Khan is going to stop him?? ;D
Barrera is going to end this punks career and stop people like you paying ludicrous PPV money to watch him fight more nobodies. Hopefully people will be grateful to Barrera once it's all done. ;)

Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
I think MAB will get stopped on his feet....maybe prematurely.

Think your spot on miles
People keep thinking khan haters are solely going on what happened against prescott despite the fact gomez and others have had him in big trouble already before.
Roach can teach Khan to fight as well if not better than pacquiao and marquez combined - but the boy does not have a chin.....end of story

Seriously that is something silly. He can teach him to be better but better skilled than Marquez not a chance? More naturally skilled as Pacquiao? Come on now:cool:

Khan isn't even on their levels, Marquez and Pac are special fighters. Amir is probably just a warm cheque to Roach at the end of the day.
Khan has been fed to the public facing crap, now finally he is fighting quality and going to stop it?? Don't make me laugh.;D

That's whats going to happen imo. I hope it doesn't especially with it being on Box Office. i'm expecting fireworks for £15 ;D
I don't know how the crowd will react if it's stopped early. Should be interesting if when it happens. :p lol.

Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
If Barrera loses in an injust way I will be very upset and will hunt down and slaughter every Amir Khan fan in the world. I will not tolerate that.
-
Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
He is the better fighter, at 135 im not sure though. My head is telling me Khan is going to get stopped one of the best fighters I have ever witnessed but there is something telling me Khan knows that if he doesnt win this hes really in for it. He has so many advantages over Barrera and if he can use them he can win this fight. Barrera is no where near as good as he use to be, I think there might be an upset here.
dont get me wrong I wouldnt be surpised if Barrera gets him out early, Khans chin is really suspect.
-
Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
You cant really get a more evenly contested fight in the eyes of the bookmakers. Evens for Khan and 11/10 for Barrera, seriously good odds on Barrera if hes not shot. If he isnt then I suspect theres a lot of guys in the Barrera camp gona be investing heavily.

was worried about MAB's frame of mind coming into this
this news gives me a hell of a lot more confidence and I am now really looking forward to this one more than ever at the MEN - should be a good night.
I will be fully behind MAB for this one but in a way I don't want the majority of the crowd to be pro Barrera - not right for Khan if you know what I mean :-\
My current thinking is now Barrera around 7 - six weeks ago I had him retiring on his stoll at end of 9th.
roll on next week - see a few of you there ;)

I wanna team up with leftylee with this sig bet in favour of Khan. Who is willing to bet?!

Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
The reason why Khan will beat Barrera.
SPEED.
Speed kills. Look at Mosely v Margarito...nobody on god's earth gave Mosely a chance.
Good thing for Khan is he has power too. Barrera at his age won't be able to handle Khan devastating speed. That's all there is too it. Sure Khan has a dodgy chin. But you have to land to inflict damage. That's another problem. I just don't see Barrera landing at all, Khan's reflexes are too fast.
Khan TKO around 5.
-
Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
A few months ago, I would have been solidly been rooting for MAB, as he has been one of my favourite fighters, however, with a lot of the general anti-Khan feeling & the fact that so many older fighters have been taking out younger guys who could become stars, I've really come round to supporting Khan, although I dunno how I'll feel when they're actually in the ring.
However, there can be no arguing with the fact that Khan will never be able to be anywhere near the fighter MAB has been, however, like lefty I think his speed could just prove to be too much for Barrera, but then we have seen how much experience has helped older guys take out younger fighters recently
-
Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
I think MAB should have stayed retired and is going to get sent back to retirement after this fight.
I have not seen him in his last comeback fight, but when he fought JMM and Pac last he was so slow, I was hoping he would pack it in. He is shot and is on borrowed time right now IMO.

You should have never doubted Barrears frame of mind. The guy would rather kill his own mother than lay down to Amir Khan . The guy is a killer and is coming here to assasinate Khan. Barrera has tried to control his temper with some skillful boxing but he boils over and if it happens in Manchester then bye bye Khan .
You dont want the corwd to be against Amir? Im want every single person to be spitting abuse at him for every second! A real pro Barrera crowd im expecting
deanrw - If Barrera was so slow why couldnt Manny or Marquez put him away or atleast drop him . In both those fights Manny and Marquez were hurt more than Barrera . Marquez in teh 7th and Manny in the 11th . Khan isnt in that league and will be alot easier to hurt

i aint even gonna try and predict an outcome for this fight coz its got that many ifs and buts that im gonna just sit back and enjoy the show. im sick of predicting, the amount of times i have and my so called reasoning, fight break down, logic, has been blown the fuck apart by that thing called the unexpected.ha,maybe thats why i love this game so much
-
Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
As this fight gets closer the more i am changing my mind i actully think Kahn will do a number on Barerra, i know Kahn has got a glass jaw but i was reading a few things about this bought and i think i read since 2002 Barrera has only had 3 stoppages showing he is no way a lightweight and Kahn is probably a 140/147 fighter of the future, also Barreras brother is so against this he advised him against it, i fancy Kahn to even possibly stop Barrera.
-
Re: Barrera, 'I'm a Much Better Fighter Than Amir Khan'
I want Barrera to win but I don't know what he's got left. I'm hoping he's got enough to beat Khan though. :)
