If Mayweather returns...
..and beats JMM and Pacquiao at 140/147, will people give him credit for it, or will they continue to say that he cherry picked his fights and delegitimize these victories by saying that he beat up on smaller fighters and ducked Mosley/Williams/Cotto/Aaron Pryor?
I'm curious how people feel about this. I know he's supposedly retired, but with all the rumblings of his imminent return, I because curious to know how people would feel if he came back to fight JMM and Pacquiao instead of taking on the champions at 147.
Disclaimer: This is not a thread about Manny Pacquaio, please do not turn it into one. It is about the way Mayweather is/would be percieved.
Disclaimer II: The Aaron Pryor comment was a reference to SRL, it was a joke. I'm aware that Pryor is no longer fighting and that PBF never ducked him. Thank you.

Re: If Mayweather returns...
I think Pac beats Hatton. Too much speed and power ;D

Re: If Mayweather returns...
If Mayweather returns...
No one at all can or will beat him.
Floyd's different gear to the rest of em.
-
Re: If Mayweather returns...
I don't know... JMM and Pac are (arguably) the biggest names right now so to fight them would make more money sense but I'm sure the haters will hate on him for fighting naturally smaller guys.
I'd personally give him credit and he would be right back up there at p4p #1.
-
Re: If Mayweather returns...
I hate to say it for am eating my own words in doing so, but I think this sport really needs Mayweather back. At one time I thought screw him and the drama, it'll be fine, but now feel it needs it for both for the fights and to have more fan boys of a different variety.

Re: If Mayweather returns...
Floyd could beat Klitschko, Adamek, Hopkins, Kessler, Pavlik, Forrest and still would get crap for it...
Floyd is an all time great, a phenom that makes people so bitter and hateful that I enjoy watching it eat away at them

Re: If Mayweather returns...
Agreed with every post here except maybe leftlee:p. I desparately want PBF back. If he comes back outta retirement I'll have my house wallpapered in PBF picture. I'll change my entire wardrobe to PBF-theme (shirts etc). I'll watch him training three times a day. I will watch (and possibly attend) every single press conference and memorize PBF's every word.......... haha, in all seriousness I will be excited, very excited if Mayweather comes out of retirement. And if he has an exciting fight like with Phillip Ndou WOW, I will be.... words can explain
Come Back Floyd!!!!

Re: If Mayweather returns...
Mayweather is on a whole other level but watchin the Castillo fight I foun dout that he is not invincible.
I dont like Mayweather's personality but his skills are just undenyable if he beat JMM and Pac he will be P4P #1 and deserve to be named a legend.

Re: If Mayweather returns...
Back on topic, I don't want him back whatsoever.
He's just a loud, arrogant prick who ducks the best.
I don't mind arrogant fighters so long they back up there talk, but Floyd doesn't. He states he's the very best, so fight the very best, simple as. But he doesn't.
His blatant ducking of Antonio Maragrito was pathetic.
Instead he chooses to fight Ricky Hatton who ain't even a welterweight, a shot Gatti, shot Mitchell, mentally unstable Judah, plodder Baldomir...you can see where this is going.
When there's prime Berto's, Clottey's, Cotto's, Mosely's around.
I hope his ass stays in retirement.

So if he comes back and hypothetically fights and beats JMM and Pac, you'd see it as him continuing to beat up on smaller fighters and be disappointed that he didn't fight Mosley, Berto, or Cotto instead?
I'm not necessarily challenging your opinion, I just want to clarify what you mean in the context of this thread.

JMM is untested at 147. I doubt Mayweather would fight him at Jr welterweight. So if he fought and beat JMM at 147 he wouldn't get my credit no. As Mayweather has/had a clear advantage and JMM is not a natural welterweight.
Pac I would give him credit for, I mean yeah he is bigger than Pac but Pac has fought at 142, and he looked good, not drained etc. So I doubt 5 more pounds would do harm to Pac. But again, Mayweather is picking on the smaller guys.
What I meant by those guys I listed is I want him to fight a natural welterweight. A decent one too who would be a challenge. Unlike Carlos Baldomir

Re: If Mayweather returns...
I wouldnt underestimate Floyd......He is a technically sound fighter and would give Berto, Cotto, and Margarito all they could handle........and Floyd would win these fights I believe....
-
Re: If Mayweather returns...
I'd welcome him back too, like most people here as annoying and arrogant Floyd can be, he's still an amazing boxer and any fight with him in would get instant attention. Like Leftylee says, I'd give him more credit for beating Pacquiao than Marquez, although I'm sure either would be decent fights.
And if we ended up with Margarito v Mayweather somewhere down the line, who would get more boos? :lickish:

Re: If Mayweather returns...
What people don't want to say is that Floyd himself is not a welterweight. Hatton is bigger than Floyd but Floyd can do much better giving up the weight advantage than mostly everybody else. Thats why it doesn't get talked about. His physical ability makes up for the size difference. If he had struggled like Hatton did when he went up to welterweight than people would see the size difference as relevant but all in all Hatton is really a bigger guy than Floyd. His natural weight is 170s, Floyd's is 150s. Floyd really belongs at 140 and could still make 135 but he doesn't have to or want to. The money is much bigger at welterweight and beyond. But I think it would be a bad move for Floyd to take on a guy smaller than him. He has the most critics, sometimes warranted, and will have to do things other fighters don't have to do. If he does return I think he needs a tuneup though. And maybe that would be a JMM or Pac. But then would have to follow up with a Mosley or Cotto. Even though I am no Floyd fan I do realize that it doesn't matter what he does he will never get the admission of just how great he really is. He is so unlikeable and this forces people to deny all the greatness they see in him.

Re: If Mayweather returns...
This question has been answered before the last ten of mayweathers fights...of course not. Jmm is just the current david holding the rock simply because he is the last fight we've seen....he snatched it from pac and someone else will snatch it from him the only thing for this sport floyd could do to please people is loose...and it doesn't matter to who or what weight class (some would have got a hard on even to see him loose to the big show) other than that you're just waiting for the next opportunity to complain about the guy while he pulls out your wallet and slips 60 more bucks out of it. I still say wanna prove your the shit then one of these guys step up and take on paul williams that i'd be impressed with.

I don't thing we'll see him in the ring again. Not in professional boxing. If you listen to the radio promotional interview he says he's sitting on $600 million. If he is truely worth all that, there is no good reasons to. He already as the image and can brag about his accomplishments. If he returned to the ring it would have to be against someone he could actually beat with the amount of inactivity he's had and have enough draw for him to risk a blemish on his record.
Mosley - to tough, he might lose a 12 rounder.
Pacquiao - to dangerous, might get a lucky shot in.
Marquez - to dangerous & not enough draw.
Hatton - Might have learned something from daddy (maybe if he beats Pacquiao)
Nobody else to consider because there's no draw.
-
Re: If Mayweather returns...
I personally would give Mayweather credit for wins over Pacquiao & Marquez. They are both future Hall of Famer's & would both be among the P4P at the time of the fights. Which in all essence would throw the weight arguements out the window imo.
But your always going to get the haters that will never give him credit no matter what he does. If he came back & defeated Mosley it would be Mosley got old over night, if he beat Berto it would be to green, Williams was weight drained etc etc
-
Re: If Mayweather returns...
I would like to see Mayweather take on a new challenge and face a proper fighter at 147. Namely Mosley or Cotto. Mayweather took too many easy fights in recent years in names like Baldomir, Mitchell, Bruseles etc. The big names he fought had question marks ie Zab coming off a lame loss, Hatton out of his weight class, Gatti was a star but limited etc.
Im not so sure Mayweather will even come back. I think that like Calzaghe he was losing interest towards the end, and that might have explained some of Mayweathers opponent choices too. He was looking to cash out as big and easy as he could. If he did come back it probably would be against someone like Pac or Hatton. I wouldn't mind seeing Hatton get a rematch because it might have evened out somewhat between them. But I would prefer a proper WW fight, doubt Mayweather would be up that though.

Re: If Mayweather returns...
I think both these fights would be worth it for his ATG rating, however, there would definitely be people who said 'oh he just beat up on smaller fighters'. If he beat Vitali there would doubtless be those who would say 'oh well Vitali clearly got old overnight'. Even though I'm a big fan of his, I actually don't think boxing needs him, I think there's enough good fights left. There will always be good young fighters coming through, hell he could beat Cotto, Mosley, Clottey & Berto, & then people would say he's duckin Victor Ortiz or Demetrius Andrade.
Also the argument about his weight is defunct, the fact is he is the smaller man than Hatton, the difference is he was actually coming down in weight after beating ODLH, which Hatton's team were claiming up until the start of the fight would affect him & leave him out of shape. They were saying before the fight how small he was & how Hatton would overpower him, so you can't make excuses after. Mayweather has a similar build to Casamayor all round (I think he might be an inch taller) but for me this makes him a natural lightweight or light-welter who has just chosen to fight above his weight.

Re: If Mayweather returns...
I dont think he needs to. I use to hate just cos i wanted to someone beat him. Truthfully I dont think anyone ever could.
I wouldnt argue his greatness over his resume just the way he went about his work in the ring. Id happily place him top 10 p4p ever. Love it if he came back.
Prolly would not give him props for beating either of them though.cos IMO it's a no brainer Mayweather owns both of them. The guy is unbeatable.

You are correct. You've pointed out the double standard, we've seen it here before.

So you'd give Mayweather credit for beating Pac, because Pac fought once at 142 against a lame DLH, after fighting only once at 135. But you won't give Mayweather credit for beating Hatton, cause Hatton previously only fought at 140? Damn, What I'd really like to see is PAC fight Hatton at 147, cause then you would have to not give Pac the credit if he won, cause he's more of a natural welterweight than Hatton? ;D

Alright dude if Mayweather ahd fought Cotto and Clottey back 2 or 3 years ago then people would just be complaining that he didn't fight them in their primes.
They'd say Berto wasnt ready, that Clottey was untested and that Cotto is a much better fighter now.
Although timelines are selective when it comes to boxing fans who have selective memories.
They would be the quickest to say if Mayweather beat Cotto that Cotto is a much better fighter now and it would be different, but they would be the first to say that Mayweather isnt the best because of the Castillo fight and that Cotto would beat him for the same reasons..as if Mayweather didn't become a better fighter after that fight either.
Once Mayweather beats someone then another name will pop up.
And I can guarantee you if Margarito beat Floyd instead of Cotto, and then this whole glove controversy came up after the Mosley fight, NONE of the people who talk about Mayweather would try to dispute Tony's victory like they do for the Cotto fight.
That said I don't want Mayweather to unretire. He should be a fighter that you should appreciate when he is around and if you didn't, when he is gone you missed out on a lot. Lot's of great fighters have come along and yet their greatness was never enjoyed because boxing fans decided to hate them.
So for the fans who enjoyed Mayweather when he was around, hats off to you, for those that didnt, its their loss.
