Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Sources: Floyd Mayweather Jr. close to return to ring - ESPN
Floyd Mayweather Jr., who hasn't fought since December 2007 and retired as the undefeated pound-for-pound king in June, is planning to fight again -- possibly as soon as July 11 -- two sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com.
"He is coming back. I've been around him. He's ready to dance again very soon," said one source, who recently spent time with Mayweather and has known him for years. "He's itching to go. The way he sounded, he is willing to take on whoever they throw in his face. He would do the [Manny] Pacquiao-[Ricky] Hatton winner, Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez. The only one he doesn't have an interest in is [a rematch with] Oscar De La Hoya. But in Floyd's mind, he knows there is one Godzilla, and that's a fight with Pacquiao."
Mayweather has been working out regularly in his Las Vegas gym, sparring and is in great shape, according to one of the sources.
Before Mayweather fights one of the big names, both sources said Mayweather's team has talked to HBO about the availability of July 11, the network's date for that month's edition of "World Championship Boxing."
Mayweather, whose last four bouts, and five of his last six, have been on HBO PPV, has expressed an interest in fighting on HBO rather than pay-per-view for a possible tuneup bout ahead of a possible fall fight with the winner of the May 2 Hatton-Pacquiao bout.
HBO, however, would have to come up with a substantial license fee to make it work, so it remains to be seen if a bout on the network could be made. A summer comeback fight for Mayweather, who has been dogged by IRS issues, could also go on pay-per-view instead.
HBO also has another dilemma. One of the reasons it has not committed to giving Main Events and Golden Boy Promotions the July 11 date for a fight that is being negotiated between cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek and former two-division champion Bernard Hopkins is because it is also talking to Mayweather about the date, said one of the sources, who has knowledge of HBO's issue.
"They don't want to upset Floyd and they hope the situation resolves itself," the source said.
HBO president Ross Greenburg was tight-lipped on the matter.
"Not only do I have no comment, it's premature to discuss," Greenburg told ESPN.com on Wednesday. "There are no real substantive talks."
But has Mayweather or one of his advisers contacted HBO about a summer fight?
"I'm not confirming or denying that," Greenburg said. "I'm not going to comment. Call me back in a few weeks."
Talk about a Mayweather comeback has swirled for months.
In December, Mayweather (39-0, 25 KOs), who turned 32 on Feb. 24, told his advisers, Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe, that they were free to listen to offers for fights.
Earlier this month, Mayweather's father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., who trains Hatton, told media on a teleconference to discuss Hatton-Pacquiao that his son's ring return was imminent.
"Of course, there is no question about it," Mayweather Sr. said. "He's trying to get a fight right now, as we speak. He's gonna fight again."
Haymon could not be reached for comment. Ellerbe did not return numerous telephone messages or e-mails.
Hope this is true.

Great news! More motivations for the Pacman.

Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Well if this is true It would be fucking awesome!
I really want to see the Pretty Boy back in the ring, sure he's flashy and arrogant and seems to have the mental age of a 14 year old member of Violent D's street gang but he's an amazing fighter and for the good of boxing we need to see the big fights that could arise.
Him and Manny would be great, him and Mosely maybe even better. Who knows even Cotto if he can bounce back and win a belt back.
Fingers crossed
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
-.- and Marquez, and Cotto, and Mosley... fuck I hope this is true. I wonder who he will be fighting. I usually don't jump on board this early, but I have been itching for him to get back into the ring, nobody fights like him, and thats why he is my fav. in the sport.

Its funny I've always though that his identity outside the ring is polar opposite to how he conducts himself in the ring. He so composed, so calculated, and so risk free. When I see him outside of the ring I think how can this punk ass bitch fight, but in the ring he's a completely different person.
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Interesting news. I will be curious to see if he just takes a tune up first.
I would like to see him fight Mosley or Cotto above all others. The Manny Pac fight doesn't really interest me yet as Manny is still unproven above 135. If he can beat Hatton then my thoughts might change. But as of now? No.
Mayweather needs to beat the best big WW's.
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
I'm only interested if he fights the right guys and at the appropriate weight classes.
i.e. don't Manny/Hatton/JMM up to WW. and if he does fight at WW lets see Cotto or Mosley.
It'd be good if he could come back with a different attitude outside the ring also - Hatton & Pac have shown that two nice guys can sell a fight, not every fight needs a turd to dislike. He definitely has it in him because he's always respectful after the fight.
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Will be awesome if its true

Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Mayweather's biggest threat is Pacquiao, Pacquiao has everything that troubles Mayweather, and thats unbelievable speed, he's aggressive, great chin, and he's southpaw. People think Judah would have been Mayweather's biggest test if he had throw more punches, well that is Pacquiao, he is more accurate than Judah, moves and is way better offensively, if Mayweather is too defensive he would get inundated against Manny which IMO means he would have to change his gameplan.
I don't think Mosley has the offensively skills to really push Mayweather same way, I think Mosley does great against linear fighters, but movement and Mayweather defense would frustrate him greatly.
Also what I don't get is that Mayweather is a natural 130 pound fighter, people didn't think he would stand a chance at 140 or above, yet now people are complaining he was too big for Hatton, he isn't that much bigger than Pacquiao and Marquez, he would be about an inch taller and probably 3-5 pounds heavier in the ring.

Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Sweet. I knew it would happen.

Not that I disagree with what you're saying, because I don't in this case, but I believe the crux of the argument about Hatton and Mayweather at 147 is that Mayweather had more time to acclimatize his body to the weight. It's a complete straw man though.

That's true - I just wish Mayweather had took the fight at 140 - he'd have made that weight no problems and given no one any excuses to niggle at the win. He would have beat the best LW in the world at LW.
No biggie I think he beats Hatton at either weight.

Props to Floyd, he's learning now how to finish a fight.
I pick Floyd to win the fight coz Hatton's arms is only 20" & only 5'6" short. Pac's 5'6 1/2" & 25" long from Armpit to fist. Pac is a Different animal than Hatton, He's faster, Punch straighter, Better head movement, quick footed. Watch Pac in any fight, he's not that hittable with the left hook. The opponent has to deal with Pac's Jab in order to be hit by a Left hook.
You haven't seen the welter Pac yet. You've only seen the 130 Pac with the Power of a middleweight.
Pac will be busy with JMM, Diaz & maybe DLH. PBF will take a Break, He'll not fight Cotto or any of the Bigger welter. hatton will Probably will be back at 140 fighting Witter or Torres. Pac might fight Hatton in England after DLH.
PBF will come out of retirement to fight Pac after all thoose Big fights.
You guys want me to tell what's going to happen next????
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Both Hatton and PAcquiao are 5'6, and Floyd certainly never looked 2 inches taller than Hatton, I think 5'8 is a generous height for Floyd, he's more 5'7
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Mayweather has to come back.
Someone has to stop Pacquaio from appearing on the cover of Ring magazine every fucking month!
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
If PBF is planning to have a tune-up fight on July 11, maybe he will pick on JMM who recently called him out and have JMM as his tune-up fight...
.
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
As much as Floyd irritates the crap out of me I would still love to see him back, just makes you start making all these dream match ups in your head it's brilliant!

That would be quite a tune up! I cannot imagine JMM going up to 147 though. I think even 140 is probably pushing himself too far.

That's a great idea two concieded loud mouths go heads up.
At 147, PBF Jr. has all the advantages over JMM... Having the #2 P4P boxer on July 11, I think it will be a good tune-up fight for PBF...

From what I understood, JMM called out PBF and very willing to go as high as 147 in order to fight PBF...

Yep, he did call him out. But it's far too much for JMM at 36 IMO. You never know though.

Yep, I won't totally write off JMM's chances against PBF at 147 but I honestly think it will be just a tune-up fight for PBF... A very good tune-up fight tho...

Funnily enough J M Marquez v Floyd would be a tune up match that would fill a stadium! ... dunno how many tune up fights can claim that title.

I consider it a tune-up fight since PBF has all the advantages over JMM... It may not be even competitive... PBF will be a heavy favorite...
Can you give one advantage of JMM? (except maybe in the experience department).
.
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Floyd will KO Pac, Marquez and Ricky again at 147.
Shane and Cotto would be better fights. At least he wouldn't have a natural size advantage, considering he brings a skill advantage over all of them.
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Actually Floyd should stay retired with his arthritis issues
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Well it doesn't surprise me really.
I hope he goes after Mosley, Cotto or Pacquiao. All fights i would love to see.
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
PBF is my favourite fighter, yet to be honest, I'm just not that keen on him coming back. I feel the sport has just started to move on from the last big name fighters, and there's looking to be a chance for a lot of young exciting fighters to make there name. I'm hoping PBF doesn't detract from that. Will be interesting to see who he goes for. Can't see him coming back for any more than 2 fights. I think it may be just the one to see if his hands can still take it.

Same as Miles, its a cheeky one for Floyd to look good.

Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
This is so wierd I was thinking about when he was going to be coming back last night. The thing that annoys me so much about Floyd Mayweather is that he has the potential to be EVERYONE at in the weight range 140-154 ( not mentioning 135 as I dont think he would ever go that low in weight ) . He seems to think that he has the right to retire and be considered the best and that is what is so frustraiting as a boxing fan for me. There is so much more Floyd has to prove to even be considered as one of the best fighers of all time. He can and IMO will do this but its not going to be easy for him at all. The fight he has to go for in July is a top 147 fighter, I personally think Shane Mosley will be his best bet. As we progress into 2009 fighters like Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margartio are fighters Floyd HAS to beat to even consider himself the best at the weight class.
With the rise of Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez if they are willing to make the move to 140-147 I would love to see these fights occur. For the person who said that Marquez would be a tune up is beyond, arguably one of the best fighters in the world right now is no tune up trust me. JMM will give Floyd Mayweather and excellent test, career defining fight for Floyd IMO. If Pacquiao doesnt get through Ricky Hatton and Ricky can maybe be faced with JMM then why not see Hatton-Mayweather 2 at 140 pounds? If Hatton can get Pacquiao and Marquez on his resume at 140 why shouldnt Floyd be tempted in fighting Hatton again?
All I can say is Floyd has a lot of options, my personal opinion for his hardest possible fight is against Paul Williams at 154. If this fight was to happen I believe we would truelly see if Floyd Mayweather is an all time great. The physical advantages that Paul Williams holds to Floyd Mayweather at 154 would make the victory if the fight was to happen be unbelieveable for Floyd Mayweather.
My personal wishes I very much doubt will happen for Floyd Mayweather. Money is a major factor for him and the likely hood of all of these fights occuring IMO are very little. The most likely fight in my eyes is Floyd to wait out the winner of Hatton-Pacquiao and I bet Floyd is hoping Pacquiao wins, and he fights him at 147. Gets his paycheck and leaves again. As a boxing fan this will really get to me because again beating Manny Pacquiao isnt enough for me. I would prefer Floyd Mayweather to fight; Mosley, Margartio, Cotto and Williams. IF he fights and beats those names I think he can get best fighter of all time recognition.
I believe Manny Pacquiao will struggle against a true 147 pound fighter, the ODLH that showed up that night wasnt at true 147 fighter but a very different ODLH we have seen in the future. I cant judge Manny Pacquiao truelly on that performance as a dominant force at 147!!!!!! At 130-135 I already have my opionion on him and that is not a pop at Manny Pacquiao in the slightest. The fight with Ricky Hatton is going to answer a hell of a lot of questions to see his true potential at the 140-147 weight range. Would I like to see Mayweather-Pacquiao? YES, if he does well enough against Ricky Hatton at 140.
The future has to involve Floyd Mayweather IMO, he is a true talent as has so much more to prove. He can do it and lets hope he does get involved with the exciting fighters that we are all witnessing. If he can come back and win these fights I will truelly consider him one of the best fighters of all time.
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Floyd needs money so he'll definately be back this year.
In trouble for tax reasons and it's no secret his lavish lifestyle costs a fortune to keep up and he loves to gamble...throwing bunches of $100 bills into crowds at nightclubs etc doesn't help either.
Still 3 or 4 big fights out there for him too - Mosley,Pac,Cotto maybe a Hatton rematch if Ricky beats Manny.
Personally i think the toughest fight out there could be Sugar Shane;)
Will be great to have him back and i'm a massive Floyd fan!

Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
My own reaction is that he has played us. He is back and forth like a yo yo. He picks his spots while his body gets a nice rest. That sucks (though it's $mart) as far as I'm concerned. Great fighters fight; they don't sit around and decide when to fight. Yes, he is awsome, but I'm sick of his routine.

I agree and coming out of retirement to fight JMM, is a joke fight for me although good for Floyds empty pockets, it won't tell us anything we don't know. JMM's 35, a bit chinny and nowhere near Floyds physical abilities, I mean just check Jnr's neck out, no way is JMM knocking Floyd out with one shot and that's the only chance he will have, as Jnr's taller, longer reach, better defencive skills and probably higher punch power will be to much for the older, physically weaker JMM, don't get me wrong JMM will put up a good fight but he ain't superman at this stage of his career.

Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
As much as I dont like Mayweather, its a smart move if he does come back to have a tuneup before taking a huge fight. Not surprised hes returning though.

I figured the boo birds would be out in full force.. JMM called out Floyd, not the other way around.. JMM has 10x the amount of balls then Pac, and decided to go against the REAL #1 PFP boxer in the world, instead of a freeze drien drained, not even ranked fighter who hadnt fought at 147 in 10 years.. cough..cough.. Delahoya.

He as a natural 130 fighter in his early 20's. He filled out into a natural 140 pound fighter, but he went for the bigger $$ and prestige of the WW division. There is no way he was too big for Hatton. Floyd has a style and the skills to fight way above his proper weight class whereas Hatton does not.
How much is Floyd hoping the Pacman beats Hatton? Now I might have to root for Pac because I would love to see Pac against Floyd. That would be my #1 dream matchup right now, followed by Floyd/Mosley.
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
If Floyd really does come back I would be so happy. I don't care who the hell he fights as long as somewhere down the line he beats the shit out of pac man for us, thats if pac man is still able to walk on May 3rd.
-
Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Well the one i think that can beat Mayweather is Mosley he has the chin, Speed, power and stamina to do it somthing Dela hoy did not. Pac had problems with Marquaz because of his defence and boxing skill what the hell is he going to do to Mayweather who is far better. Then there is Cotto who is chinny and also has stamina issues in the last few rounds. And as for Margrito well he out of question now but even if he was he is to slow and would not be able to get anything done because of speed.

Re: Mayweather coming back?!!! July 11th!!!
Tune up fight...? while on the surface it's sounds like an insult to say JMM.... and while I have great respect for JMM accomplishments fighting his way back to the top of the game.... Style wise, JMM is no match for PBF. Look at how he performed against Chris John.... PBF has a tougher time against Khan.... and Khan shouldn't even be mentioned with the same breath as JMM.... Like the man said "Styles make fights".
What the hell....?? ;D
Now having said that, if JMM were to catch Floyd with something... well... he's a very dangerous fighter!
