inline vs wider

Is an inline stance when you can draw an imaginary stright line from the front toe of the lead foot to the rear heal of the back foot like in this clip?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ-u_jVgQro
I have tried this stance but i find it difficult to get my right hand off smoothly,I preffer the stance in the next clip.But i was wondering what other peoples preference is.What are the pros and cons of each stance.Is an narrow stance better for amature boxing?I think both coaches are very good but wanted to know which one other people prefer.

okay cant get the other clip to work but got this one although he stands slightly wider in this.Im sure most of you will have seen the freddie roach one before if you go on to you tube you can watch it.

I dont think thats a very good demonstration of the basic Stance. Theres a couple of big No Nos in it.

are you referring to the last one? too much weight on the front foot perhaps? Any examples of youre preffered stance?

I prefer straight line,but thats because you present less of an available target that way,and you can hit with equal if not greater power if you have good hip snap

classy boxer reminds me a bit of sugar ray leonard,I am not that comfortable in a straight line stance as i find it dificult to throw a right cross,I find i need a bit of lateral stabilaty.Dosent floyd mayweather use straight line stance a lot when hes doing his shoulder rolls for defence? By straight line does it mean straight line from front toe to back heel or is it narrower than that?

Front and Back foot in line with front Shoulder, Biomechanicaly it restricts Psosas and groin not an ideal way of doing things, Floyd uses a technique where the shoulders move the feet. Not a bad way of doing things.

Mac, wasnt straight Line, He could go where He wanted to and switch because ot where His Head was, above His arsehole. ;D

Scrap, what did you think of that journos book?

The biggest and most noticable difference I've seen is in sparring MMA guys. Some of these guys were very good too at their game, but for pure boxing were so square due to that sports requirements it was amazing how easy it was to pick them off. Their whole target range seems to be doubled on them and especially when they are coming forward.

As well, the wider they are, the more predictable I find. But I spose it is subjective to how fast and good the person is. Am guessing some square fighters get away with it ok due to incredible speed.

Im from the same school of thought as Freddie, like Him as a person. Worked in the same gym for a bit with Eddie, loved the Guy and His methods, but do things a bit different. I read Matthews book recently, was wondering what you thought about it?

Johns Book has had troubles getting the green light. Dave told a few Porkys but was sorry He told me, but it was well written ;D

Try and treat them as individuals, everybodys different. But theres got to be a pattern, work on the basic foundations, the feet. If they are wrong as in anything it fails. I explain would they Buy a House with Bad Foundations, like everyone they wouldnt. If you cant do the simple things youve no chance when it gets Hard ;D

YG. There stance is wider/square for a reason because their front leg is a target for kicks and takedowns. The same way in a boxing stance the front leg/knee would get the snot kicked out of it (unless your footwork is good and you understand range).

Ya Missy, I understand why they are wider. Last summer we first had these pro MMA guys show up at our gym for stand up experience, and I knew a few of them were really good and was shitting myself a bit before having to spar them. The point I am making is that I found out then because of their need to be wide, and even if they are good at their sport, that square wide stance is a huge disadvantage when it came to pure boxing. It surprised me how much of a difference it actually made in both their defence and effectiveness in striking.

So should i be ok fighting from a shoulder width apart stance?Perhaps getting a little wider on the inside to get more leverage on hooks and upercuts and even stightly narrower if need be when backing up with the jab?

The first thing my coach taught me was the stance. He showed me 2 different stances. One stance was at shoulder width apart, which you can move in all directions which is the attacking stance.
He also taught us the single stance or the single line stance which is more a defensive stance. Which you can cross block and shoulder roll out off. But is harder to throw a right cross unless you step your lead foot across into the attacking stance as you throw the right cross.
I dont think you should choose one of the stances i think you should use both, depending which one will give you better balance in the situation.
