Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
Booooooo
What happened to Cotto or Clottey or Mosley or Collazo?
this really dissapoints me, either take a step up or rematch Collazo.

Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
Yep it's a done deal, it would have been better for someone bigger but will still be a decent matchup

Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
I know berto has the belt and all, but this is exactly the type of guy he needs to be fighting right now. He and we all know he isn't ready for the top of the division right now. Collazo..he's been there done that, every close fight doesn't deserve a rematch instead another good fight with someone else is better imo. Berto fell into the belt prematurely he knows that, this fight will be decent i don't blame berto.

I mean when will Berto be ready??? He just fought a solid contender and looked pretty average, Collazo imo is the sort of opponent you fight just before your big fight in your career hes a top 10 fighter who comes ready, Urango??? Im sorry but this is bullshit, Urango is a limited 140 lb fighter Berto is the WBC Champ ffs, he neeeds to be ready now if not he needs to stop pretending hes a world champion.

Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
What are people talking about? Urango is terrible, and a huge step down. He's similar to the guy Berto beat to get the belt. He doesn't need speed bumps right now, its time to see if he can fly or not. When he doesn't square up and throw haymakers he is amazing, but then he throws telegraphed punches that make him easy to counter, and he is wide open when he starts throw widely. There are times however where he is very tactical, he is one of the best athletes to ever grace boxing, but he needs to utilize that ability along with the boxing skills which he does have, if he wants to compete at the top level. IMO he should be going to Floyd Snr to tighten up that defense, and keep it tight because he is super hard to hit when he doesn't want to be, but he gets drawn into slugfests.

I think this proves what most of us thought Berto is not elite i mean how more gimmes does this guy want??
I think they wont throw him in there with a top Welterweight because they know he will not win, i think Clottley would of been a decent scrap and if Berto fought a clever fight could win but fighting Urango is a joke.
I dont knwo why Berto gets away with an easy ride with this fight, people should be slating him to the high hills, imagine Cotto, Hatton fighters like that took a fight against Urango they would be geting abused from all angles.

Good posting...good points....I agree with most of it 100%...
Berto did fall into the title a bit too early....A rematch with Collazo will not prove much....IMO he beats Collazo next time around with out the amount of difficulity he had 1st time....Berto is still in the growing stages of his career...His power is natural...His boxing ability is getting better...A little more on defense and a bit on stamina would be nice....
But he needs diversity in opponents right now....He needs to get used to being in there with all styles......He is a poor mans Fernando Vargas...A bit too much too soon but the mistakes made with Fernando can be avoided if they don't throw him in with the top of the heap just yet....EG-Clotty, Cotto, Mosley etc....There are champions out there defending against worse then Collazo and Urango so no reason to be that rough on him for opponent choice

What a crappy conclusion! The only thing lining up a fight proves, is availability and the ability to work out a deal.
Cotto is has been trying to work out a deal with Clottey.
Judah was trying to make a deal with M. Hatton
Mosley is sitting out hoping for a Mega fight with the winner of Hatton/Pacquiao.
What other possibilities does Berto have in your so called elite fighter category?
Taking on Urango is best match up available for Berto, or perhaps you should call Berto for a job... Matching up fighters at the top of the weight class is tougher than you think!

I don't think that at all, He beat Forbes easier than Oscar did, he beat Collazo easier than Hatton did. He has all the natural ability in the world, and the right attitude, I just think he needs to keep his defense tight. As for his stamina, I don't see any problems, IMO he is one of the best conditioned guys in the sport, he is still throwing hella fast at the end of the bout, and his reflexes stay sharp.

Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
I may be in the minority here but I think this is a pretty good match-up! It has the potential to be a great fight (like Collazo/ Berto was), if Berto is impressive here then he can move on to much bigger fights. IMO Berto needs to build his name a little more then when potential fights with the Cotto's or Mosley's materialize they are huge events!

Please are you serious?? Urango is ranked number 5 in the division under 147, hahaha!!
So you feel there was no one else. Please!! Shocking match making imo.
Kel i know Hatton has fought Urango it was just an example of a top fighter who would of got slated if he got matched against a limited fighter moving up in weight.

Berto's only #7 at welter! I think this is a good match-up! If you saw Berto struggle with Collazo why would you want to throw him to the wolves straight away? He needs more seasoning! I agree a Collazo rematch would have been nice but this is still a solid fight imo

Urkal and Jennings spring to mind. ;D
I think Urango is a decent test, he's coming off a few highlight reel KO wins. Not sure what he's done at 147 to get a shot but he's a former 140 champ and imo is passable after such a hard fight against Collazo.
I'd like to see him fight Mosley or Cotto though, but i guess that won't happen until Berto gets another name on his record....and yeah you're right i suppose, Urango won't do in that sense. So long as he follows it up with a live 147er like Clottey then he'll get his shot at the big time....providing he wins.
-
Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
I don't see a problem with this fight at all its not as if Berto is the Ring champ in this division right now he's merely a belt holder.
Urango has never been stopped so will doubtless be a test for Berto especially in the late rounds and there's no rush to stick him in with a top fighter becuase on the basis of what we've seen in recent months he's not ready.
I don't think the likes of Mosely, Cotto, Williams etc struggle with Collazo and Cosme Riveria the way Berto did, let him get some more experience before he fights them.
Urango at least holds a belt even if it is one that Malignaggi gave away.

Fak king Supa! back up your opinion genius! List the "available" match ups for Berto! Lets us see who's available and out there that make a better fight.

Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
Regarding Berto, did you know that Vanes Martirosyan beat him in the amateurs to secure a spot on the 2004 Olympic team?
In terms of this post, I agree that a rematch with Collazo was due, and that fighting a champion 140 junior welterweight is not necessarily the best match, but if Mosley wouldn't fight him and Cotto and Clottey are fighting eachother, who do you suggest he should fight?
-
Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
I don't mind watching this fight. I don't think Berto is up for anyone bigger than Urango at the moment. I do however hope this is a good scrap. Berto will eventually have to step it up a bit but I don't see Berto beating any of the top Welters except maybe Tonya 'Hands of Plaster' Margarita.
-
Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
Well, Urango was pretty gigantic for a 140 pounder so he should be fairly strong still at 147, unfortunately he's just not that great. He could have his moments though.

Oh SNAP! I did not even notice that you were a FORUM MOD :o When did your get you SADDO Middle Weight MOD Forum title? :o

A few months ago I guess. Seems like it was around Christmas, Saddo needed some new mods and made me, BoxingGorrila, Fenster and Smashup mods.

Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
Pretty even fight imo. Urango got enough fire power to bring down Berto.

Riveria floored him legitimately and took him 10 rounds. For a supposed future world class star thats piss poor imo. Judah blasted him out inside 3 rounds and Angulo just manhandled him and forced him to quit in 5.
If Berto is truly world class he shouldn't be going 10 rounds with the likes of Riveria and he certainly shouldn't be getting floored by them.
I think Urango is a good test for Berto right now. Apart from Collazo he's never fought anyone better.
I'm not sold on Berto's tougness really, I think Urango will ask a few questions of him. I expect Berto to win but I reckon he'll be taken another 12 hard rounds and will have a few ropey moments whereas Mosely, Williams, Mayweather, Cotto etc wouldn't have any problems

Uh no he didn't Berto had the spot on the US national team and beat everyone, but he was disqualified in one of his fights and that eventually led to him being forced to compete for Haiti. He was actually considered the best fighter on the United States team before he was forced off of it.

Um you do know that Rivera had 2 weeks noticed for the Angulo fight and came in 17 pounds lighter than him?
Also you want to talk about Zab Judah, I dare his promoter to try and put him in with Berto, he would get destroyed.
Forbes is really tough, nobody has even dropped him, David Estrada is super tough and it took Cintron only one less round to stop him.
Not trying to compare the two, but do you think ALi should have been floored by Henry Cooper?
Didn't Felix Trinidad go down? Didn't Demarcus Corley affected Mayweather, and almost knock out Cotto?

Because I think it ridiculous to state that Urango will beat Berto or because Berto won every single round, except the one he was knocked down in.

Only messing but come on mate you go on about Berto as the second coming when in reality he is nothing special.
-
Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
I think he has the potential, just doesn't either have the guidance or the mentality to take advantage of his strengths, if he did IMO he could be a Mayweather or Roy Jones Jr type fighter, but because of his mentality he would be very lucky to even achieve Cotto's level of career.

There is no real way to know, but please see the below links for why I thought that Vanes beat Andre in the amateurs:
Meet The US Olympians - Vanes Martirosyan

Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
Berto had the spot on the team before he was disqualified. Because of his speed and boxing ability people thought he was the best prospect in the 2004 team going into the Olympics. Andre Ward wasn't expected to do as well as he did, and Berto fought a guy who was 6'3 in the olympics and once the guy got ahead he just stayed away.

Re: Andre Berto is fighting Juan Urango May 30th?
This is a very good match-up and a decent voluntary defense. Abit surprised its taken this long for Urango to move up in weight as he looks huge at Jnr Welterweight.
Another good learning fight for Berto against a creditable contender. Berto has superb skills and I'd expect him to beat Urango but it is still a dangerous fight as Urango can bang.
Berto is about 25 years old so relatively young for a World champion and his management are doing a great job. He's not in his prime and not ready for the Elite but if he keeps progressing then I think he can be a major star in the sport.
People like Cotto, Mosley etc have bigger fish to fry and bigger money fights so Berto is unlikely to fight any of them soon. All he can do is keep defending his belt.

spot on welsh
Urango will make the switch to 147 easy as he is a huge light welterweight thats packed with solid muscle and can definitely throw a punch.
Berto`s style is very similar and i would be stunned if this one went the 12rounds.

Berto was one of the best prospects in 2004 and was supposed to be on the team. The DQ was questionable at best, but still from what i gather he lost to Vanes in one of the matches leading up to the games. Vanes is 6'0. Not 6'3. However, he fights at Jr. Middle now and Berto fights at welter.
