Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
I'm thinking of putting a bet on. I'm not sure how much Winky has left but if he's still as good as he was when he fought Jermain Taylor I think he can beat Williams, maybe even dominate him.
I'm a bit worried about his legs but I think a prime Winky hands Williams a boxing lesson.
Very interested to see how this pans out and wouldn't be at all suprised if Williams loses a wide decision and gets embarrassed like Pavlik did against B Hop.

Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
Wright will beat Williams convincingly. They're both leftys and the Williams-Quintana 1 is the perfect blueprint for Winky. I hope he's got enough gas to put pressure on Williams.

Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
I dont know Bilbo, its one of those fights where anything is possible, if i had to put my head on the block id say Williams to fresh and busy for Winky at this stage of there careers. UD Williams.

Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
I gotta disagree, i do think it's more of a safe bet dropping dough on williams but winky will never be a easy opponet for anyone.
-
Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
It's amazing to me to see how many people think it will be an easy fight for either guy.
This is going to be a close competitive fight. Even though I favor Williams, I'm definately not confident enough to put on bet down.

Yeah I know its just it has the potential of being a blowout either way I think.
If Winky is done and his legs are gone I'd fancy Williams to easily control the fight and win with no problems but if Winky is still in shape and still has it in I really think he can take advantage of Williams rather crude style and totally outbox him.
I want to root for the old champ, he never really got his due and it would be great if he could turn in a Trinidadesque masterclass here.
I'm envisioning Williams throwing loads of punches early but getting caught time and time again before his offensive output is halved as he cannot get to Winky.
I also think cuts will play a factor and I can see Williams getting busted up, bad swellings etc.
I'm going out on a limb and prediction a lop sided Winky win or even a late stoppage in his favour.
Of course the smart money would be on a split decision win for Williams with Winky protesting he was robbed, ha actually this really could be the best bet of all Williams razor thin SD :D

Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
If Winky is the underdog HELL YES I would put money on him. Sure Williams throws a ton of punches and he's big and awkward but Winky Wright is a great boxer, he can hang with the best and I think he could give Williams all he can handle no matter what shape Winky is in.
Conversly, if Williams is the underdog (which I doubt he is) I'd put a few bucks on him. This is a pick'em fight...Quintana gave Williams fits in their first fight, if Winky can counter Williams then it's going to be a LOOOONG night for Paul

Williams is the big betting favourite, in the UK you can get 2/1 on Winky I think that's 3 decimals
-
Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
I'd do it....sure Winky has been off for like 2 years but #1 Paul Williams is not a 1 punch power puncher #2 PW doesn't like pure boxers (as evident with his 1st fight with Quintana) #3 Winky has a hell of a chin and great defense #4 Williams throws in quantity and Wright throws in quality.
I think it's a solid bet

Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
I thinnk this is going to be a one way or another bout for Winky.....
He is either going to show his age and the ring rust will be too much for him and it will be an embaressment for him or
Winky will completely dominate Williams making Paul look like Pavlik in the Hopkins fight

Yeah exactly my thinking
I'm rooting for Winky though, if any man deserves a career defining win its him

Well Bilbo, I was just reminded that Teddy Atlas picked Williams, so whatever you were planning on putting on Wright, double it.

I am rooting for Winky as well believe me...One of the eras best...Plus I just don't like Williams

Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
The odds on Winky are good ones, but I think the smart money is on Williams. I really think he's that good and has learned from the off night against Quintana. Winky is a quality fighter, but age, inactivity and being the smaller man (height and reach) will play against him.
Williams will just keep on throwing whether it lands or not, and can't see Winky setting the same pace.
-
Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
i bet on winky on points since he won't ko paul imo I thought the odds will be close to even. but paul is no way a huge favorite
-
Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
Well got this one completely wrong. Maybe the trouble Sam Soliman gave Winky was an indicator but I was seriously impressed with Williams tonight.
Winky although old and inactive was no Oscar De La Hoya in there and I think Williams fought a brilliant fight.
If he can stand up to middleweight power its hard to see anyone who could live with him.
I'd love to see him fight Pavlik or Abraham but if he can't get those right away maybe a middleweight showdown with either Shane Mosely or Vernon Forrest.
He looked so much bigger than Winky too, he has the frame to go up to 168, maybe 175 even at some point in his career.
-
Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
I agree Bilbo. Paul is so big and busy. FIrst he defeated my man Margarito, now he beat Winky up. He has ruined alot of my enjoyment in life.

i was equally impressed with Williams, honestly thought that he came close to the stoppage a few times, but Winky showed heart and craftiness to stay in the fight, very good win for Paul

Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
wow, paul williams proved me wrong. I was very confident in a Wright win. Bet quite a bit of mmoney on him . Damn , this is by far the worst prediction I've made since i was confident wright would pull it of. Hat of to WIlliams

Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?

haha that's what we love stand over the fence with a foot firmly in both sides :D
I actually didn't think he showed his age that much really, it was just Williams was that good. He'd have been a nightmare for Winky at any time in his career imo.

You caught that one did ya.....:D
In all honesty no he did not look too bad...Certainly showed he lost a few steps though...The long layoff may have really been a big factor in his performance....
The work rate of Williams was just too much for Winky to deal with

I think the main factor is that Williams is just a whole lot more awkward to figure out than we realised.
I actually (suprisingly) liked Larry Merchant's pre fight analysis about how in battles between old champs and young stars its usually speed that kills.
I think Williams workrate was just to much and he threw far too many combinations for Winky to handle.
It's difficult to see who could beat him at 147-154 but Quintana managed it so he can't be unbeatable.
If he makes a mark at 160 I'd love to see Joe come out of retirement and give him an boxing lesson.
I guess its possible however that a fight with Bernard Hopkins is not completely out of the picture at a 170 catchweight if neither can get a big fight later this year.
After what Williams did to Winky and Hopkins did to Pavlik that would make for an intriguing fight.

He certainly did little to prove he is the most feared man in boxing...In fact as a MW IMO his power is dramatically lessened...
Hs team was smart to turn down a fight with Pavlik in the past and after last night regardless of out put he does not have the steam to keep a Pavlik or AA off of him....
I think either of the two champions would make sport of him.......
A fight with Sturm at MW would be his best route right now....
Calzaghe would ruin him if Joe came out of retirement...

You're a difficult man to please Daxx!
I don't remember anyone ever beating Winky like that he completely dominated him I thought it was a great performance.
He may not have the power of Abraham or Pavlik but his workrate will cause tremendous problems for anyone I think.
His punch output is probably even higher than Calzaghe's another fighter whose power has been maligned and who 'slaps'.
I don't think Williams lack of one punch power will hurt him much he just throws so many damn punches he takes the other guy out of their gameplan.
I need to see him in with another big middleweight before I think he can take on the likes of Pavlik and Abraham but honestly already he jumps to number 3 in that weight class imo.
What other contenders are there? I think he beats handily the likes of Duddy, Mora, Slyvestor, Maklin etc.
Not sure what weight Mundine is fighting at these days but that would be a great matchup, although obviously since Kessler Mundine has refused to fight anyone who is above club fighter or faded journeyman level so unlikely to happen :-\

I agree on what you are saying....Maybe I am a little hard on Williams but he just talked so much shit after winning the belt from Tony and just sat around to lose it to Quintana....I am all for shit talking but don't just stand around and rest on your laurels...
I want to see Williams in a war with a fighter his size that gives him something to comeback from...So far when he was tested he lost to Quintana....The 1st rd KO in the rematch would not happen again if they fought 20 more times...not that Quintana would beat him 20 tiomes just the KO caught Carlos off guard he was not expecting Paul to come out like that....Though it was a good win
I want to see him against a guy like Pavlik, AA hell even Miranda who would not be deterred just me

Re: Anyone else think Winky is easy money tonight?
Daxx, I think you seriously under estimate Paul's punching power. Before the second Quintana fight I would have agreed with you, but you talk about learning from a loss. He and his team went back to the drawing board and he is sitting down on his punches MUCH better now. Does he have one punch power? No, but he gave both Phillips and Winky serious beatings. Made Phillips quit on the stool and was damn close to a stoppage a couple of times against Winky. He was beat up worse than I've ever seen him after that fight. Paul certainly has acquired respectable power. And the sheer volume adds up to a lot of hurt.
I think if he fights Pavlik and Abraham, there is no way either can win on the scorecards. If it goes a full 12, Paul wins an easy decision against either because of his tireless work rate (especially against Abraham who has a tendency towards inactive rounds). The big question is whether or not he can take a punch from a legit power punching middleweight. He's shown a serious beard up to this point, but that was against guys at 147 and 154 and of course Winky has not knocked out anyone of note in years. If he can take the punch he will out work either to a clear decision.
