Clottey "Margarito Invented The Blueprint To Defeat Miguel Cotto"
CLOTTEY: "Cotto Knows I Am Going To Come To Do My Job" | TheSweetScience.com Boxing
Joshua Clottey is crossing his fingers that he will make the most of the moment when he takes on Miguel Cotto on June 13th. He works and prays everyday to capture the moment. Clottey excitedly told TSS in a phoner, “I want to be a part of this event. I want to know everything about Cotto and how good he is. I just want to get in there and see what he is about. I want to see how well he can really fight.”
But the opportunity of a lifetime nearly hit a brick wall. A few weeks ago, Miguel Cotto (33-1 27KOs) got into a well publicized skirmish with his uncle and head trainer, Evangelista Cotto. The drama left what many believe to be a gaping hole in Cotto’s camp during a critical time of training. Clottey (35-2, 20 KOs) heard all about the family feud that ensued in the Cotto camp but does not see a reason for the Puerto Rican to be concerned.
“I don’t think he is going to think much about it,” Clottey said. “He is going to be training. He knows who I am. He knows I am going to come to do my job.” I don’t think it is going to hurt him at all,” Clottey said. “Cotto comes to fight. And this is the most important fight of my career. I am very sure that it is going to be a great night.”
Although Clottey plans to come forward against Cotto often, he will do so with his gloves raised high. “Margarito did what he did but I am not going to do the exact same thing. Margarito and I have a very different style. I see punches when they come,” Clottey said. “Margarito has a very good chin. He keeps coming and coming straight at you until he gets inside. I use my defense to get inside. There is a difference.”Clottey admits that Margarito invented the blueprint to defeat Miguel Cotto, pressing the issue. But the Ghanaian does not foresee the same blood-fest in his fight with Cotto. ‘Doing what is best for Joshua’ means Clottey has to impose his will onto Cotto defensively, instead of walking into punches.
Clottey continued by saying, “Look, the guys out there never wanted to fight me. They just want to go in there and feel comfortable. I have always been known as the guy that wants to fight the best. But the best never wanted to fight me. Now I have a chance to prove myself. I am very happy that they are giving me the chance to show who I am.”

;D
Step 2: Lightly mist inside of gloves after plaster is inserted.....
Step 3: Shake lightly and hide.
This is going to be a great fight; can't wait. Almost a must win for both.

Re: Clottey "Margarito Invented The Blueprint To Defeat Miguel Cotto"
Picking Cotto to sharpshoot and turn Clottey over 12.But in the Maragrito fight and in a few spots prior,he has a bad habit of backing to ropes, almost squares up on them....'sitting'.Clottey very durable.
Key thing might be Clotteys mindset. He needs to show some constant fire.Hide the kids, this one could turn into a tough battle all the way.

Re: Clottey "Margarito Invented The Blueprint To Defeat Miguel Cotto"
i changed my mind after watching the margarito/cotto fight again. I had watched it the first time and thought that margarito landed a lot of punches and had dominated cotto, but after watching it a second and third time, i had it tied going into the 11th round. Cotto landed more punches than i thought and margarito missed more punches than i thought. it was a close fight going into the knockout round.

Re: Clottey "Margarito Invented The Blueprint To Defeat Miguel Cotto"
I don't think Clottey can execute the gameplan Margarito did.
Margarito has a immense workrate where Clottey seems to tire late in fights.
Clottey needs to apply controlled pressure on Cotto, not constant pressure and would need to use his lead right hand, one of his best punches imo.
I think Cotto will be too much though, His jab will be key in this fight.

Re: Clottey "Margarito Invented The Blueprint To Defeat Miguel Cotto"
Clottey is either intentionally or mistakenly leaving out that Cotto knows how to get in and out. What Margarito did, along with plaster, was put immense pressure no know but Paul Williams can replicate. Clottey can't outbox Cotto so he would have to either try to put this pressure on him for 12 rounds or catch Cotto with one that does change the fight. Clottey's peek a boo style will not bode well against Cotto. He will get in and out before Clottey counters. Cotto wins this by convincing UD.

Re: Clottey "Margarito Invented The Blueprint To Defeat Miguel Cotto"
Cheating a side and not to over simplify things but Margarito's strategy was quite simply I can take more punishment and hit harder than you.

Re: Clottey "Margarito Invented The Blueprint To Defeat Miguel Cotto"
you can all short sell Clottey as much as you want but:
He is as rough, tumble and crafty as there is, he is technically sound with a great jab and A+++++++ defense to go with immense size (usually weighs 160 after rehydration) not to mention he's solid as a tree stump.
When Cotto can't break his man down he slams it in reverse and fights off his back foot. He cant and wont even put a dent in Clottey and will get broken down himself when he starts going backwards..
Clottey in a punishing 12 round desicion or late stoppage win and I personally wouldnt call it an upset.
Clottey is a damn good fighter who is underrated like Winky was all those years and this will be his break out fight.

Re: Clottey "Margarito Invented The Blueprint To Defeat Miguel Cotto"
I think Joshua Clottey is the perfect fighter for Cotto to go against in his comeback from that "loss" to Margarito.
Clottey doesn't have bone crushing power (I would of course make sure to double check his handwraps though).
Clottey doesn't throw millions of punches like Margarito
and Clottey doesn't apply pressure like Margarito, he may come forward alot but since he's not throwing a bunch of punches and he doesn't have crazy punching power it shoudln't matter to Miguel.
Cotto needs to BOX, he needs to hit and not get hit, he needs to work on movement, combination punching, and attacking the body. He can counter extremely well as we saw in the first half of the Margarito fight but he's going to have to be able to do that for 12 rounds and I think because of the way he lost he's going to give a good showing vs Clottey.....I just hope he doesn't try too hard because he did that a couple times (Corley and Torres) and it didn't help out at all.

Agreed with all of that.....Though I will say that I agree with JT Rock about Clottey being sold a bit short and underestimated. Clottey has a penchant for not showing up to some fights and kind of just walking through them with a laclustre sort of approach. But this fight with Cotto I expect the best Clottey to show up and I think he wll give Cotto some problems later in the fight. I got Cotto winning this one pretty decisively but he can't get cutesy with this kat or he could find himself in trouble down the stretch.

Re: Clottey "Margarito Invented The Blueprint To Defeat Miguel Cotto"
Clottey is durable and THAT is why he's dangerous...he could withstand a big attack and be there when Cotto is gased out or eventhough he's not a huge puncher he could catch Cotto who would be willing to trade more after getting hit and withstand that and maybe end it early.
But any way it ends up it's COTTO's doing, he'll either fight smart and win or be dumb and lose

Re: Clottey "Margarito Invented The Blueprint To Defeat Miguel Cotto"
To all those who are picking Clottey, I can understand your reasoning. Clottey's a tough, solid fighter, who takes punches and keeps on coming. He gave Margarito all he could handle and then some. I also see no Cotto hate on your picks, only some huge belief on Clottey.
That being said, I hope Cotto proves you all wrong in June. People have always underestimated Cotto, and after the Margarito fight there was a bunch of "I told you so's". But we all know what transpired after that. Not only did Margarito's cheating put reasonable doubt on Cotto's fight...... but also to those who were saying that Cotto had beaten an old Mosley, the obvious answer is:
NOW who's old?!?
So we'll see on June 13th. One thing for sure, as with all of Cotto's fights. It'll be a good fight and one that all boxing fans will enjoy.
