Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
by James Slater - It's likely both guys should have called it a day by now and retired from the ring, yet both all-time great Roy Jones Junior and former world champion Jeff Lacy continue in the search for glory. Now, according to a news article in The Tampa Tribune, the two men are very close to facing one another in the late summer of this year..
Lacy, from St. Petersburg, Florida and Jones, from Pensacola in The Sunshine State are, according to the news piece, "90-percent close to a done deal" with regards to fighting each other in August.
"I think we're a couple of days away," Lacy said. "Probably by Monday or Tuesday we'll have everything settled and tacked down."
Lacy, 25-2(17) will co-promote the bout under his Left Hook Promotions banner, with Jones' Square Ring Promotions sharing the event.
Jones, 53-5(39) was ringside last month when Lacy out-pointed Otis Griffin, and after the 40-year-old had won his own last fight - by TKO over Omar Sheika - he talked about the possibility of facing the 32-year-old. Now it looks like the fight is a go. Who will win?
As said above, both men should really be enjoying their retirement years by now - Jones especially. Yet neither guy is what you could call shot either. It's possible the two men would give us an interesting and fan-friendly affair if and when they clash. "Left Hook" fights at super-middleweight, while Jones, in all but one of his last nine fights, has operated at light-heavyweight. It's possible then, that the two could meet at a catch-weight.
Jones still has flashes of his former brilliance, as he proved when downing Joe Calzaghe in the 1st round of their November 2008 contest, but he is so much easier to hit today compared to the days of his awesome prime. Some say Lacy has never fully recovered from his meeting with Calzaghe, when he was pounded mercilessly for all 12 rounds back in 2006. On balance, Jones, though the older man by almost a decade, probably has more left at this point.
On the other hand, Lacy has never been stopped; whereas Jones has twice been KO'd. Going into this fight, the former IBF 168-pound boss would likely feel a stoppage win would be a strong possibility for him. Something of a grudge-match, the mooted August showdown will surely be a big seller if it is staged in Florida.
We can expect an official announcement of the fight any time now it seems.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
Is there a fight that means more to the landscape of boxing as whole? If Bob Arum was promoting this fight, I'm sure he'd be mentioning Pacquiao as a possible opponent for the winner.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
if the fight happens a think lacy will win by ko around the 6th or 7th

I think Jones still has enough to beat Lacy.Lacy has never looked right since the beating at the hands of Calzaghe.
Jones by wide ud imo.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
Even this older version of Jones is more than enough to handle Lacy! Can anyone say clinic?
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
a think lacy will outwork jones and lacy has got some good power and we all no jones cant take good shots but a wouldnt be surprised if jones won by a wide points win just got the feeling lacy with land a big bomb on jones and finish him

I can see Jones using a tight Winky Wright style defence like he did at the start of the Trinidad fight.
He knows he has a to protect his chin and has adjusted his style.
He is too ring smart to get caught by lacy.
It will be a clinic with Jones toying with Lacy and winning a wide decision.
Styles make fights and Lacy is made for Jones. ;)

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
Jones is not that far gone that lacy can ko him. Way too slow and im not sure his power is still there. I think tko win for jones.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
I think Lacy would steal a points win in the dullest fight in history
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
I think as long as Jones isn't stupid and doesn't try to fight off the ropes too much he wins it... Lacy is too much of a puncher for Jones at this point but I've never rated his boxing ability.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
Yeah, like one post said Lacy has never been the same since Calzaghe. Lacy never had any boxing skills but his ferociousness is gone. He used to fight determined and with that power he has always wreaked havoc. But that determination and ferociousness is gone...but the power is still there. So if not for a bomb to land then RJJ should win this one handily. Both fighters do need to quit though.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
Jones will put on a clinic imo.
Lacy's only hope is Jones lays on the ropes too much and takes stupid shots. He got caught by a few from Sheika which he didn't need to take.
Not sure on Lacy's power...never been that sure on it tbh. Over-rated! Going into the Calzaghe fight i think he only had 1 legitimate actual KO where the fighter was down for the count. Think it was a bit of a myth developed based on his nickname, physique and KO record (including tko's).
He has some power but maybe only just above average at best. Roy should be able to take him for either a comfortable points win or a late tko.
Would be good to watch. I love wathcing Roy, and i have a lot of respect for Lacy - great heart.

i'd be just as interested in who butterbean was fighting on the undercard of this meaningless fight. Click both for what it matters.

I to think Jones will fight like Winky, hands high but the problem he does get hit in this posture also. Calzaghe,Trinidad,Tarver all snapped his head way back while his hands were on the bookshelf.
I can see Lacy winning this but also I can see Jones winning. Jones of old would have had fun with Lacy but this is an OLD Roy Jones. Lacy has nothing but pressure and we do see what happens to Jones when pressured. For me it depends on what Jones shows up. If he moves even a little bit he will make Lacy miss, but when was the last time we seen Jones on the bicycle after about the fourth round. I can't pick this one yet a little too far away.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
We can compare their fights with Joe. Jones had him down and was never on the deck and thats when he was past his best . Prime Lacy never got near Joe and was on the canvas
Jones wins on points.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
Jones is just too quick for Lacy
Jones by wide ud ;)
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy
I guess Jones on points in the least anticipated fight since Jones-Calzaghe, Jones-Trinidad, Jones-Badi Ajamu and so on.

Jones-Lacy done for Aug. 22 on PPV
According to the Tampa Tribune, the Roy Jones Jr.-Jeff Lacy fight is signed: Last weekend, former IBF super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy said a deal for him to face Roy Jones Jr. this summer was "90 percent done."
That 10-percent gap closed Wednesday as Lacy signed to fight the eight-time world champion, likely Aug. 22 at a site to be determined.
Because no deal could be made with a television network, the fight will be on pay-per-view.
"It's all on ink - now they just have to ring the bell," said Lacy, of St. Petersburg. "This is great. It's my second promotion under my own banner and I get to co-promote a huge fight with me and Roy Jones. Second fight out, it can't get any better than that."

Not really mate, pointless fight between two fighters after one thing $$.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jnr vs Jeff Lacy
As long as they are going to fight on, may as well each other I guess. The fight does make some sene considering where both guys are at. I think Roy will blast him out, he's still got enough left and Lacy just seems to be a total shell.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jnr vs Jeff Lacy
Skel I think with Jones it's more about $$$.
Not saying he's not delusional etc but I think that he doesn't need toe money and genuinely still believes he can come back.

Dont see much point in this match, think Jones is shot up and Lacy as well. But after I found that it was taking place 5 minutes from my house,Im all over it;D;D. Might be nuts but Im picking Lacy to catch up to him.Just dont think Jones has the legs & endurance anymore.
