Calzaghe - Retired for good?
What are peoples thoughts on Calzaghe being retired for good? There have been a couple of developments since his retirement that may be good enough to tempt him out.
Court case - Seems to be a bit of a hollow victory for Calzaghe here. He won the case but the reports I have heard is that he is only going to end up getting about 200k or the Hopkins fight which is a relative pittance for arguably his biggest ever fight. These are just the reports I have heard so if anyone knows more please feel free to shed light on it. But with extensive legal costs and being robbed of the majority of his purse could he be tempted to come back?
Promotional company - Early reports that I have heard is that his promotional company have been struggling and making losses. They have had to cancel a number of events due to poor sales. Could Calzaghe be tempted to come back and headline a few of his own promotions to try and get the company up and running - similar to what Roy Jones is doing?
You would have to assume that Calzaghe is well set up for life but with his promotional company struggling early, losing most of the Hopkins purse and having to pay legal costs and also a costly divorce a few years ago, does anyone think the temptation to coe back for a million dollar fight would become to great, especially if he is missing the sport? Perhaps he culd be taking some time off and seeing what develops like Mayweather did.
At the moment I can only really see three possible candidates:
1. Hopkins - Hopkins would relish a rematch Im sure and if he could add another impressive performance like against Pavlk soon then this fight could be a possibility. With the first fight being a contentious SD perhaps Calzaghe would like to set the record straight. If Hopkins and Dawson happened the winner would be a clear fight for Calzaghe if he wanted it.
2. Dawson - The heir apparent to the LH division. Unbeaten, quite highly rated and a big fight Stateside. Ideally would like to beat Hopkins to truly own the division but undoubtadly a big LH fight.
3. Froch - Probably the least likely in my view due to saleability but with Froch making waves through SM and taking on the big names could the temptition to come out and shut the Cobra up be there if Froch could get past Bute? I would assume Froch would be willing to give up weight advantages and move to LH for the fight which may be even more tempting for Calzaghe and then the opportunity to make it happen in the Millenium stadium to cap it all off.
What are peoples thoughts?

Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
Joe will stay retired and will not come back.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
I don't think Joe has any motivation to fight on. I think he got out at a perfect time and is 100% financially secure.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
If Froch were to go on and beat 3 huge names in his next fight then maybe Joe will consider it.. you always get the feeling someone like Joe isn't really going to retire for good, he loves the sport too much, kinda like Mayweather. I don't think he would come back to fight Hopkins though, Joe isn't much of a rematch man and IMO there isn't much case for a rematch, regardless of what hopkins fans and I thought (I thought the scorecards should of at least been alot closer) the judges had him ahead quite clearly.
Again with Dawson, if he were to beat some big names in his next few fights there's also a case there, but he's already wasted some precious time by taking a stupid rematch with Tarver. Money is always the issue though, and the biggest factor will be if Joe has enough money to last or if his bank dries up.

joe aint coming back he done everything

Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
Although I would have liked to see him face BCD, I never thought he would be the type to make a comeback - Good for him.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
If he did come back, which is a possibility slim but stranger things have happened, Froch would be the most ££££ rewarding.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
yh froch has been calling him out for quite sum time
-
Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
I really don't think Joe will come back. And good for him too. There are too many old men who just don't know when to give it up.

Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
If Froch did a number on Kessler, I think JC would comeback and fight
Froch, but Kess would ko Froch so that ain't happening and
Joe will stay retired :)

Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
calzaghe wont be back in a boxing ring professionally again that i am 99.9% sure of.
Too much to lose too little to gain.
Joe wouldnt be able to make 175 again in a life of sundays, and he sure as hell wont be fighting cruiser or a catchweight anytime in the next 3-4 years!!

He wont make 175 again? He would make 175 easily mate, 168 maybe wouldnt make again but 175 easily, he was eating three course meals two days before the RJJ fight.
How much money do you reckon Joe has between 10-15 million or not even that? He seems a quite grownded guy so i dont think he will need the money, but like Phil said if Froch deos make some serious noise and starts getting some heavy recognition over here and the States, like i say starnager things have happened probably would have to happen at a catch weight.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
i dont wanna see this fight as by time froch made a big name of himself joe will be even older, joe dont need this fight, froch does but joe dont do it man

Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
Calzaghe knows his limits. He will not push his luck. He fought in the perfect time and retired at the perfect time.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
I doubt he will come back, but you never know. But it would definately be at 175 if he did. He could easily make that.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
I would tend to say he's out for good unless he receives the offer of the offer's queen and personallly, I think such offer won't come to get him out again.

Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
He got all the money back from Warren and his legal bill would have been a few tens of thousands. Warren got flattened by the judge's ruling and they didn't even give him leave to appeal. Joe won't be fighting again.

He's too busy hooking up with 20 year old Models.

They went back to court and Calzaghe won again. In his ruling the judge came as close as judges ever do to calling Warren a cunt and barred him from leave to appeal the judgement. The money is in Calzaghe's bank account and maybe even Warren paid his legal fees which would have been 50-60k max but maybe 30-40ish.

Joe will be back in 2010, I'd bet my right nut on it.
He's so predictable, plus Enzo could do with a W.

He didn't marry her, she won't get any money. If her career doesn't do anything soon she'll probably do a kiss and tell in the papers but that's it. Meanwhile Joe appears to be after anything in a skirt and is starting to do celebrity stuff. It may be some time before he thinks about getting married again. I wonder if he's a better dancer than Holyfield. It'd be hard not to be.

Re: Calzaghe - Retired for good?
Calzaghe got awarded a gift SD win over Bernard Hopkins. Bernard offered Calzaghe a rematch in wales in front of Joe's hometown fans. What a finale it offered for Joe. BUT Knowing he got lucky in the first fight meeting a not 100% fit Hopkins and getting knocked down in round one he got a SD victory he didnt deserve. Joe shot his fans the bird and RETIRED purely to save his precious 0 he's ducked & dived to keep throuout his career. He knew if he met a 100% Hopkins bang goes the 0

Which is exactly why Freddie Roach stopped training Hopkins. He said Hopkins didn't know where he was at times and walked to the wrong corner twice after taking those masses of speed punches from Calzaghe.

If is was a gift decision why did Hopkins keep trying to waist time and con the ref?
If it was any other ref in there Hopkins would'nt of been aloud to hold his way through the fight and leave his head in at times.
I was a close fight but it wasnt a gift.

Hopkins next fight did 190,000 PPV buys against Pavlik. 190,000. Pavlik. HBO have currently refused to go above a $3million pot for Hopkins-Adamek. They paid a reported $6million for Calzaghe.
No-one was paying for that ugly shit again. ;)

You mean that masterclass of boxing that Hopkins delivered to Pavlik? That fight was far from ugly - more like a thing of beauty ;)

I didn't know Hopkins wasn't 100% for that fight and I've never heard that. Don't forget Calzaghe went to the United States to fight Hopkins in the first place and Hopkins was probably the most dangerous opponent for Calzaghe at the time. He risked that 0 in the first fight.
The thing about that fight was how ugly Hopkins made it look. I got the feeling that if Hopkins didn't hold the whole fight and hadn't taken five minutes to rest when he was hit with a blow that wasn't actually low, and actually fought Calzaghe, Calzaghe would have made it look easy.
Also, Hopkins acted like a complete douche leading up to the fight so it makes sense that Joe wouldn't fight him again. And ask yourself if the reason Hopkins was willing to go to Wales to fight Joe again was because he thought he would take a decision from Joe in Wales when he couldn't get a decision from him in the USA or if Hopkins just wanted another major pay day? And to be honest, I'm not sure how you can say Joe didn't deserve a split decision. He hit Hopkins more than any other fighter ever. No matter the punching power of if the punches were tit-tat, Hopkins has never been hit that many times ever. Pavlik, Taylor, Trinidad, De La Hoya. No one can claim to have done that.
Anyway, it's besides the point.
I'm curious if Froch wins the SMW tournament (which he won't do, let alone his first match imo), if Calzaghe would come out of retirement to end the question of who is the best SMW in Britain.
