A buddy texted me tonight asking who Ray Mercer was? I wasn't thinking and I said a comedian who used to pull phone pranks.
Then I remembered Ray Mercer......the ancient HW boxer and corrected myself. Anyway he said that Ray was fighting one of those MMA or UFC type deals this weekend.
Surely this can't be true. Ray is like 55.
Mercer is fighting 6'8" former UFC heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia in a BOXING MATCH.
Didn't know it was this weekend though.

Yeah, as stated above, Mercer has fought several MMA type fights. In all of them he has shown up out of shape, and quit pretty quickly.
It is really just a case of him picking up a paycheck.
They apparently just changed the format and this WILL be MMA rules...Tim Sylvia is the embodiment of what Ihate about MMA, I'd love for Ray to whip his ass!

Yeah he did, Kimbo just swarmed him and didnt give him a chance to punch really. Looks like Tim was a little too cautious and payed for it. Kimbo didnt try to box mercer, Tim looked like his goal was to punch with him...bad decision.Quote:

I know most boxing fans won't care but credit to the 49 year old Mercer who was expected to lose and came to fight. Good showing for boxing and how boxing is clearly a more developed sport for punching

And credit to Sylvia for bein honorable enough to try and stand with him in the cage after their boing match fell thru.
He gave Mercer a chance and Mercer definately took it.
The more I read about this the more it makes me happy.
This was supposed to be a boxing match, Ray only trained for boxing, and then a few days before they find out its not a legal bout for some reason, so Mercer's pissed and the idea's thrown around that they'd still just box even though it was MMA rules but Sylvia when asked won't agree to just box when that was the point all along. He actually threw a kick at some point in the fight although I guess its not on video.
Edit-might be wrong about the video.

This is an boxing forum and will have the die hard boxing fans but how many boxers that enters K1 and UFC gets their a-ss kicked? Quite a lot. And there's a whole mess of videos of that happening. And there's also a vid of Ray Mercer just quitting after getting kicked hard in the face. Simply put boxing and MMA are 2 different sports. Boxers belong in boxing rings and MMA fighters belongs in their own rings.Quote:
