MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMP KELLY PAVLIK IN ALCOHOL REHAB
17 June, 2009 by Pedro Fernandez
CHAMPION PAVLIK’S PROBLEMS CONTINUE
Youngstown, OH- World middleweight (160 lbs) champion Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs) has checked into an Alcohol Rehabilitation Center. Having just signed a new contract with promoter Bob Arum, Kelly, who has lost only one fight to Bernard Hopkins is no stranger to alcohol abuse and its related problems.
KELLY SUFFERS FROM SEVERE THIRST PROBLEM
Before he won the title from Jermain Taylor, Pavlik reportedly got into a scuffle with a policeman which is said to have brought about probabtion. Soon after besting Taylor, Pavlik put his fist through a window in his home, requiring over 50 stitches to repair. All in all, the 27-year olds psyche was destroyed by Hopkins, who upset long odds by shutting Kelly down late in October 2008.
Alcoholism is no joke and this is no laughing matter.
Let's keep this kid in our prayers.

Wow, looks like Hopkins put him over the edge a bit. I hope he gets through this ok and can get back on his feet

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
Too bad if its true. But everybody's got issues.
I say if its true cause Pedro Fernandez writes a lot of garbage. Chances are it is true though.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
that explains why he hasnt been in the news. i guess this makes me a fan of his since im strugglin with an addiction. Lets go Kelly!

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
A shame if true. But everyone has had their merry dance with the bottle at some point or other. Hopefully, he will fix himself up and come back strong.
-
Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
WOW! I had no clue any of this was happening to him. I knew Kelly would have a hurdle to overcome with that loss but I didn't think it would be taken this far.
Bernard can keep his head up high considering he took the undisputed middleweight champ and turned him into an alcoholic. They don't call him "The Executioner" for nothing.

I wouldn't have figured this was going on either with Pavlik. Oh well; best of luck to him.
He looked drunk in the Hopkins fight the way he got schooled. It was bound to happen, as though he's a good fghter he has glaring problems and is limited as a fighter. I guess that wake up call Hopkins gave him injured his pride; and you know what they say about pride:p That fight may well have ruined him. Hope he doesn't fall into disrepair like the town he comes from.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
You could see after the B-hop fight he was totally heart broken.... Especially when Hopkins gave him his post fight(read massacre) pep talk... There's something to say of good sportsmanship,,,, but when you've broken down a man's mind, body and spirit through the sport he's dedicated his life too, going up and saying the likes of 'don't worry, you're still good, just because I totally wasted you doesn't mean you still can't beat C grade fighters', it's just wrong...
Leave the guy to his broken spirit...
And that's not to say I think Pavlik can only beat C grade fighters, but that pep talk from Hopkins post fight probably got him closer to a Pavlik uppercut to the nuts than anything he did during the fight.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
Too bad,i like Pavlik. At the end of the day its his own fault, after all its self inflickted, nobody is to blame for his problem appart from themselve.I hope he does pull round and come back stronger than he ever was.
Remember Scott Harrison when he let alcohol take over his life during his boxing career:rolleyes:he is just a total waste of space now,he hurt soo many people who where there to help him get out of it,but he choose to spit it all back in their faces.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
I wish only the best for Kelly, take care and God Bless.
Hopefully this news is just hearsay.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
Kind of reminds me of Gerry Cooney. Was flying high before the Holmes fight then when he lost he as HBO so elegantly put it "sent his career into a downward tailspin". We can only hope Kelly get's the right help and moves on.
-
Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
Well I still haven't been able to find any other confirmation, but I do know that the guy who reported this, also reported about Kelly's new deal before anyone else.
I checked the local paper here, and nothing yet, but I'll keep checking.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
It is funny that people are saying he became an alcoholic because of the Hopkins fight.
It's likely something that's been building up for years and finally got to the point where it was completely uncontrollable.
I will keep him in my prayers though, right between the one where I win the lottery and the one where I obtain god-like powers.

Actually it isn't that easy i had a family member that was a serve drunk, it went on for atleast a year. Thats why i don't drink because i've lived it.
People will comeback and say well you can just have a pint or two, but it doesn't end up like that does it ? with mates there egging you on.
Theres too many drunken teenagers these days anyway, and thats why this country is going down hill.
But enough with the ranting i wish Kelly Pavlik well.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
I only wish I could drink alcohol; I can't stand the taste yuk!! But I would feel better about my addiction to dollhouses and dressing up in women's clothes if I was drunk enough to not notice.:bawling:

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
I had no idea Pavlik has that problem. That's really a news to me. I always like him. He's very humble and generous guy. Kelly difinitely made the right choice by asking for help. I wish him the best. Btw, welcome back Danny and Diane.

You really are a moron. You really should do a little research before you make stupid statements on a subject you obviously know nothing about.
The Journal of the American Medical Association defines alcoholism as "a primary, chronic disease characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking." The DSM-IV (the standard for diagnosis in psychiatry and psychology) defines alcohol abuse as repeated use despite recurrent adverse consequences. It further defines alcohol dependence as alcohol abuse combined with tolerance, withdrawal, and an uncontrollable drive to drink.
Take it from someone who's father was a raging alcoholic. The disease had taken control of his life, and as young girl I begged him for years to get help. His help, came in the form of using his service revolver to blow his heart out when I was 15.
It's not an easy thing to kick, it's a battle that you have to face everyday, and I thank God that if Kelly does have a problem, that he is getting help, because I would hate for his 2 kids, to have to go through what I went through.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
Hope he gets a handle on the demons.Looks to be one of the 'functional' drinkers if all of this is accurate. But it only takes a short amount of time to convince yourself of your own propaganda if it has its claws in you firm.Kellys a good guy.He sees it as problematic and is looking for help.Good on him.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
Dude has fought since then and looked fine....pavlik lost but it wasn't like he got his ass ko'ed or even seriously seriously hurt. He should be embarassed if anything for sticking his chin out at taylor then getting it checked, that stupidity was way worse than anything hopkins did. The guy didn't even loose his belt. He's having an alcohol problem cause he lives in freakin ohio among empty factories and vacant lots. Liquor stores are probably the only thing open. I for one call bullshit on this whole damn story. Wanna feel sorry for someone feel sorry for the thousands of vets who deserve to be drunks and others with lives way worse then pavlik. The rest of us have problems but without the stacks of cash in the bank to help. Help ricardo mayorga, that's a guy who needs rehab.

I came in here to say the same thing.
He didn't suddenly become an alcoholic because Hopkins whooped his ass, if this story if true it is something that has been with him for a long time.

I was also going to say this.
It's not as simple as will power, addiction is a complex physical, psychological, and possibly biological issue. Saying it's as simple as "cutting down" and "willpower" demonstrates a clear lack of knowledge regarding these kind of issues.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
How ironic this would be, if it's true about him going to rehab. I went to his website, and went to read his blog to see if there was anything posted. Well this video was just posted yesterday.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
I do hope that this is all bullshit, because alcoholism is a disease for some people & I really hope that Pavlik gets better.
However, I can't be the only one who finds that the way it writes like Pavlik suddenly became a raging alcoholic off the back of the Hopkins fight kinda stupid.
-
Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
That article sounds like total bs. Severe thirst syndrome and stating exactly why he started drinking. It sounds like bollocks.
-
Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
I wouldn't chalk this up to the Hopkins loss. It seems to be a constant problem for him. Remember the incident after the second JT fight where he broke the window with his hand and required stitches? I bet he has been battling this all along, but it is just now coming to light.
He needs to move out of Youngstown and into a Big Bear type training facility where he works all the time without outside influences. He probably could use a new trainer too. Manny would work well with Pavlik.

Re: Let's keep the Ghost Pavlik in our prayers as he is battling with Alcohol and is
As I was saying on the first page who knows if its true or not (it still may be for all I know) cause Pedro Fernandez is a tool.
This for example, how would he know this, "All in all, the 27-year olds psyche was destroyed by Hopkins, who upset long odds by shutting Kelly down late in October 2008."
It could be true but this whole paragraph is tabloid stuff, take two events, only one seems clearly alcohol related, imply that there both because he's an alcoholic and then finish with vague speculation. The kind of thing they teach you not to do if you go to journalism school.
