Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwards

Gotta love Roy for speaking his mind. I always liked him as a commentator and I hope he gets back in there once he retires.

Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
I think the best part was the look Roy had on his face once he finished talking. He was PISSED!
-
Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
Excellent stuff from Roy. No point pissing about and mincing your words, telling the truth is what makes a great commentator/analyst who the fans can respect.
-
Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
u gotta respect the guy for that
-
Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
I was never a huge fan of Roy as a fighter, but I always thought he was a very good commentator on HBO. He really knew how to analyze a fight, and he had no problem criticizing fighters, promoters, judges, etc.

Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
Fair play to jones . He called it like everyone else saw it. I remember staying up to 5am to watch this fight and i was nearly physically sick when the draw was given
-
Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
I still remember that fight, was 12 at the time and I still feel the same injustice now when I watch footage of the fight as I did then. Thank god he won the rematch. First time I've seen that RJJ interview, not often you get guys saying it as it is.
-
Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
In the last year and 1/2, since I started following professional boxing fervently, I've seen this same situation play over and over. You could pretty much run this interview in about 1 out of 4 fights and just switch the names. It's discouraging.
Professional boxing needs one governing body, badly. Do I want it in the hands of Senator McCain, or government? No, not really, just handing it off to more crooks. But I believe he has the right idea.

Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
As bad a decision that was Holyfield just nicked the second fight but no way on earth he was going to get it after the first rip off.
-
Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
I remember watching the fight and the crowd reaction after the decision was announced said it all, Lennox was shafted and like Roy said whenever King is involved you have to expect something like this

The worse part about this scenario is that Eugenia Williams, the blind or corrupt judge you choose which, gave the fight to Evander is STILL poluting ringsides as a judge. She now hides under the name Gene Williams though

Jones getting robbed is the biggest disgrace in Sports history

Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
hehe Roy made Don King out to be the devil in that clip. Well later on he made a deal with the devil then.
All about the green

Agreed he was blatently robbed but so were many others, but they didnt bleat whine and cry like Jones did. His being robbed of gold brought him more fame than if he'd actually won gold. Of course if he'd got the gold he wouldnt have the excuse not to fight away from home country.
Has he ever fought outside the U.S????? Nah he stayed here and fought postmen and garbage collectors while ducking his real contenders

I don't know about that. I haven't seen the fight in a while but I thought Evander edged it the second time. Lennox getting the nod in that fight was justice though.
Now way in hell the first fight was a draw. Lennox was robbed on that one.

Well i can see someone maybe arguing that Evander Holyfield, won the rematch. I don't think theres "No way in hell" that he couldn't of won. But IMO i just see a repeat of the 1st fight, with Lennox Lewis controlling Evander Holyfield with the jab, except Evander Holyfield was more spirited.
Here was my scorecard from awhile ago.
1 Lewis
2 Lewis
3 Holyfield
4 Lewis
5 Lewis
6 Holyfield
7 Holyfield
8 Lewis
9 Lewis
10 Lewis
11 Holyfield
12 Holyfield
Lewis 115-113

Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
For Evander Holyfeild in his late 30s still being able to hang with Lewis was a acomplishment and yea he lost first fight the secound one was close.

Jones was a fucking kid and an amateur..lewis was already a champion professional.. And from what i remember of jones in 1988 after the robbery was him saying pretty much the same thing he said on tht clip. He was considering not boxing anymore.

Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
Jones was right,Lewis was robbed in the 1st fight. But his ability to take a conversation and make it about himself...in the 3rd person has never ceased to amaze me ;D
Thought Holyfield took the 2nd fight.A bit of over compensation for 1st result wrong call imo.

I thought that was funny as hell..jones finding a way to talk about himself...
makes me remember when he was calling the mayweather - gatti fight..
"Yeah this fight is done, reminds me of the Jones Pazienza fight" or something like that.

Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
i remember lewis got loads of sympathy from america after that defeat, in a way it was the best thing for him. but as soon as he beat holyfield all the americans went back to hating him if i recall correctly

Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
1st fight was a pretty bad robbery. I though Evander clearly won 7 rounds in the second fight. I remember having a real bad taste in my mouth about Lewis after the second fight. It seemed he knew he already had it in the bag barring a KO and simply fought not to lose.

Do you know Lennox was almost ready to quit boxing after Holyfield I.
Just look how he'd been treated ?? Bowe renaged on an agreed fight after the four man tournament. Bowe beat Vander, Lennox demolished Ruddock the two winners should have met. Blubber Bowe ditched the WBC belt rather than fight Lewis & get KO'd AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
Tyson evaded Lewis twice once when King gave Lewis $4 mil to step aside so Tyson could make an easy defense first with the assurance Lewis would be next. Lennox was avoided again. The Vander "draw " debacle was almost the last straw breaking the camels back

Re: Never seen the HBO version of Lewis Holyfield just found this clip of RJJ afterwa
I remember watching Roy lose in the Olympics and tears came to my eyes when Roy began wiping tears from his eyes in the ring after the decision was made. I also remember the Korean raising Roy's hand and pointing to him, basically acknowledging tha Roy was the winner. That was truly class in any language.
I always thought that Roy was a pretty good commentator, especially when commenting on what was going on in the ring during a fight. If you want proof of this, just pull out the tape of Trinidad vs. Mayorga and you will see what I mean. Everything Roy said that night came true by the end of the fight (while Larry Merchant kept jabbing Roy about getting KO'd in his recent fights, which, by the way, Roy took in stride and joked about it, showing his good guy qualities)

Where can I find the fight Rican, any idea? I've always wanted to see it.
