Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Kelly Pavlik has criticized the fighters taking part in the Showtime tournament saying that they're 'ruining their careers for peanuts' & how 'no-one watches Showtime, all the big fighters are on HBO'.
Kelly Pavlik Blasts The Super Middleweight Tourney - Boxing News
I don't know about anyone else, but this has seriously put me off Pavlik, it's very bitter & he describes the winner getting $4m (in addition to signing fees I've heard rated at $1.25m each) as nothing. He seems to ignore that this is good for boxing, rather focusing on 'PPV draws' which he simply is not. I'm really hoping this tournament can crown a boxing star for the future, which is partly why I hope Dirrell wins. Pavlik is in what is fast becoming a dead division & has not beaten anything higher than a D-level opponents since Taylor, yet he goes at these guys??
A lot of Pavlik's behaviour recently has put me off him. The Mora contract thing was messed up & now he's criticizing the guys who are willing to put their records on the line.

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
I don't know what's going on with Pavlik. I like the guy, but he seems to have gone a bit weird since the Hopkins fight.
I think the SMW tourny is a really good idea and fair play to the fighters willing to make a go of it. That to me is what boxing should be about. Guys taking risks and being willing to take on the best in the division no matter what. Whining about money and PPV shit is not going to endear you to anybody.
Pavlik needs to get a fight signed up ASAP. He should at least stay busy.

Must be the booze talking

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Jeez either my favorite fighters are head butting ring posts or cheating or now it seems turning into bitter alcoholics. At least Andrade hasn't turned douche on me:p And there's always Linares:woot22:

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
This doesn't make much sense, Pavlik does come off as bitter. Pavlik is just biding his time in a division that is currently dry with a lot of promising prosects who will likely be rushed in order to take advantage of a poor division. The real drama in the division is whether or not Pavlik can hold on to the strap until Danny Jacobs and company come to take it from him. Within that, will he fight Sturm or vice versa? That's what I want to see and really that's the only fight I want to see.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
I think Kelly Pavlic has really been busted up in the brain since his loss to the Executioner Hopkins...
he has been acting weird lately because that loss is still haunting him like a big monkey on his back...
I like him and i like his no nonsense style.. but he should straighten up his mind and focus on getting better.

True. And there are some good prospects heading his way. Thing is what does he do now? A fight with Sturm would be nice and get him back; any fight hell.
Problem is he's not the name on people's lips anymore. Even haters gotta respect him moving up the ranks and taking care of things in the MW division and winning fights no one thought he would. Then the schooling from Hopkins{which was bound to happen when he met a great boxer}; but I never took that much away from him. He went up in weight to fight a legend; got schooled.....live and learn.
Now he's in a state of seeming obscurity and doesn't like it lol; and criticising these kats for making something great happen in boxing. He should be applauding them; but wants to act like he knows what's best for their career lol....he doesn't even know what his is doing. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Yea that is what I am thinking + the likelihood of personal problems affecting his judgement of late. The thing that I liked about Pavlik was his humility and 'do the talking it in the ring' attitude.
I had concerns about both Cotto and Pavlik making successful comebacks from their losses, because I really believe a bad loss will mess with many things head-related, confidence largely. I think his got shook pretty hard by B-hop. We may still be seeing the effects of it.

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
I used to like Pavlik, but I've soured on him since the last Taylor fight. I was really looking forward to watching Abraham knock him out.
I dislike the people he surrounds himself with (Jack Loew) and I find him arrogant.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
It's funny; the last statement says "whoever the winner is; I'll move up and kick his butt"....I have my doubts about Pavlik against any of those guys; hell even JT could beat him if he didn't gas and at SMW it's a whole different ballgame anyways. Some candles burn brightly; but usually for a short time.

Redundant, I know. I was in a hurry.
I'll edit it for you.

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
I kind of like Kelly so giving him the benefit of the doubt maybe the guy just caught him on a bad day? Tis bitchy though.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Pavlik is just pissed because he just watched one of his bigger paydays (Abraham) fall out of his grasp.
He's stuck now fighting guys like Mora or Sturm, who nobody really cares about.
I just hope Kelly doesn't get mad and punch his arm thru another window while doing housework.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Better than sittin around watching pavlik do nothing or fight rubio which is the same thing besides don't like it great they didn't invite you
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Sounds like he knows that he missed the bus.I have some issues with the timeline on the tourney but bottom line is it puts a rising division in the spotlight not to mention some top boxers.Nothing wrong with that and I'm leaning more towards Showtime lately over HBO.
Pavlik needs to move up.

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
As others have said one thing I really liked about pavlik was his humility, before the miranda fight, miranda was doing a shit ton of trash talk, and kelly was just quiet and all about letting his fists do the talking. Then somewhere along the way he changed talking about he's going to knock hopkins out and shit, he should just go back to being the quiet man who focuses on shit in the ring, it obviously got him more success.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Pavlik is a wimp. I know DeanRw likes him, but i don't see how?!
I have always wanted to see him defeated, and in addition to a 4o-some-year-old man...he is defeating himself with booze and his attitude.

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Maybe he is a little pissed off saying that he never was asked. Maybe he really did want to participate and Showtime didn't even think of putting Kelly in the tournament. I couldn't see why anyone would disagree with this tournament. The last big thing that happend like this was back in the seventies in the heavyweight division. From what I am told it was incredible.

Its possible that due to Pavlik's recent problems that Showtime thought he was too much of a risk/liability.

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Not sure what is going through Pavliks head other then the sound of Hopkins Gloves still pounding his head and some grain alcholol..
This is a great idea...the payday may be smaller but the idea of one champion will bring the winner much larger paydays and exposure for those who participate

Can someone tell me how it would have worked if by chance Showtyme had wanted Pavlik to participate? He's with HBO so how does that work out with conflicting companies? Would he have been able to participate? Aren't a couple of guys in the tournament HBO guys like Ward and Direll:confused:
And is this stuff coming from Pavlik more HBO induced verbiage and less Pavlik talking? I'm not implying that HBO necessarily told him to say this stuff so much as Pavlik just saying what his mothership would like him to say and trying to take shots at Showtyme.

dunno bout that
kelly would of been the biggest draw in the tournament.
I dont dislike the idea of a league based tournament and no doubt the concept will pull in a few extra viewers.
But why over a 2year period? potential great fights like pavlik-kessler, abraham-sturm, froch-bute etc are no well and truly dead in the water and i fear we are now going to get a pavlik, bute, williams triangle of matches as we did with oscar-mosley-vargas-winky
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Pavlik wants no part of the tournament because since the Taylor fight, he seems to have been keen on not stretching himself. That might be Arum & Dunkin's doing, but the fact is he's been keen to avoid Abraham, & I think they only went for Hopkins because they saw him as finished & an easy name to get on his record. If he had won that his drawing power would have been great, but he didn't & the best money option he has now is Sturm for $2m on HBO. I personally I think the length is good, gives the guys enough time to recover between fights even if its a gruelling one & I don't see anyone bar Taylor maybe dropping out. Don't see any bigger fights, & by the time the winner is anointed I reckon Daniel Jacobs will be the MW champ of the world.

Pavlik is bitter because he no longer has any big money fights. He has ducked Abraham for the past 2 years, with the belief that his big money show down would always be there, when HBO go sick of him milking them for easy money. Now that Abraham is tied up for 2 years(in an awesome tournament), Pavlik has nothing to cash in and is SOL.

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Pavlik is all by himself who else can he fight Felix Sturm?
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
Who is Pavlik anyway ? Maybe it's me, but I'm sure this is the same man who got schooled by Hopkins for 12 rounds. His bubble has burst and this a great tournament.

HBO has already offered to put up a 2 million dollar licensing fee for a Pavlik vs Strum fight; the Pavlik camp declared the offer to be insultingly low.

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
I agree with everyone else, Pavlik is acting like a spoiled brat.
To tell you the truth, alot of times when HBO and Showtime go head to head I prefer the Showtime fight cause they usually have competitive fights, not like HBO showing a huge name against some shmuck. Anytime HBO has a good fight they put it on PPV.
I would agree Pavlik was damaged by B Hop. B hop didnt just beat Pav, he beat him pillar to post. At least when guys like Cotto lost they had their moments...

agreed, except showtime has always had horrible announcers.

Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
I hope Pavlik realizes he sounded really dumb and then makes other comments. He sounds like a guy who refuses to dare to be great. Then he puts down the Super Six Tournament. How? Of course a tournament would be a bad idea to him because he refuses to be willing to attempt to clean out a division. He was offered a fight many times by Abraham and Sturm. But I guess Lockett and Mora are better names towards his legacy. He wouldn't join a tournment because he wants to pick and choose guys he thinks he matches up well against. And the comment that these guys are fighting for peanuts is laughable. He fought Jermain Taylor for $660,000. Pavlik is just trying to make himself look rightful for not being in the tournament but he had a terrible attempt at it. He said he is not in the tournament because he is a middleweight but yet he would move up and kick the winner's butt. Umm, Abraham is a middleweight and couldn't get Pavlik in the ring. Pavlik needs reconstructive heart surgery. Boxing doesn't need another boxer avoiding certain formidable guys.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
i love seeing the best fight the best instead of protecting their bummed up records.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
For Pavlik's sake, I hope Jermain taylor wins this......and then refuses to fight Kelly.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik not a fan of Showtime Super-Six
He has gone incredibly diva for some reason. He kept clamoring about HBO but I have not seen HBO roll out the red carpet for him since the Hopkins fight!LOL
