Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
Dirrell-Froch and Abraham-Taylor on Oct 17th
and Kessler-Ward on November 21st.
I've got Dirrell
Not sure yet about Abraham-Taylor, I know that's a slam dunk to most but not me.
And Kessler.

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
this tournament is a great idea, when was the last time anything like this done before all i can remember was when tyson cleaned up in the heavyweight elimination tournament in the 80's:confused:

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
I can't wait for it, it's going to be great.
Froch has already revealed his first round draw so I'm guessing the others have too.
Froch's lineup is as follows.
Fight One. Andre Dirrell
Fight Two. Mikkel Kessler
Fight Three. Artur Abraham
I havn't see the first round fixtures for the other fighters but that is what Froch said his fixtures were on ITV 4 at the weekend.
That's a fucking hell of a lineup and if he's unbeaten by the end of that he'll have done more than Joe Calzaghe imo.
Imagine that, 5 fights consecutively being as follows.
Pascal
Taylor
Dirrel
Kessler
Abraham
And then he's still got the semis and final.
Whoever wins this tournament will have one hell of a fucking resume by the end of it!

agree, but IMO Dirrel outboxes Froch for a UD, Abraham/Taylor probably will have it's moments but Taylor most likely will fade down the stretch and Abraham will stop him with precise sharp shots, and well i think Kessler will take it

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
This is great news; and gives us something to look forward to while awaiting that Pac/Cotto fight.
I haven't seen enough of Dirrell, or Froch tbh, to make a prediction. I'll say Froch just because I feel like it. I still say Froch gets a lesson in boxing frm several of these guys but time will tell.
I got Abraham winning against Taylor, think Taylor will look hella' good for the 1st 6 or 7 unitl Abraham picks it up coupled with Taylor gassing. But Taylor may find his way in this tournament in regards to conditioning and learning how to not burn so much nervous energy; he does that he's going to spoil some parties.
Kessler/Ward is one I am having trouble with. I'm going Ward. This tune up fight Kessler has coming up is fin and dandy; but it's another junkbutt he's fighting like the last 2; been a while since he's been in with a real decent fighter and Ward is confident right now. Nerves mght play into these 1st fights for young guys like Direll and Ward.
Froch
Abraham
Ward
This is like the greatest sh#t ever:woot22:

Super Middle is 'THE' division currently, this is a great idea. We get good fights all round. Now let's get the Super Bantams to do the same thing?

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
I really hope everyone sticks to it and the managers-politicos dont come in and muck it up once the results start going against them.
What happened to Allan Green?Would have been a added player. He needs to get it going.
I'm seeing Abraham really do a number on Taylor.Have come to like Taylor but I think he's actually near the end of......Ward/Kessler should be great. But Kessler is no Miranda....who's Psyche and chin had already been opened.Good Improvements from Ward but very tall order here.Think Kess bulls him around late for win......Dirrell and Froch may just be a train wreck:shinner:.Think Dirrells hand speed may give him shitefits.Dirrell by decision.

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
This is a really interesting thing and should be done more often. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Ward wins the whole thing. Would like him to get some recognition.

I agree. It's the most compelling of all the first round matches. Will Abraham be able to put enough pressure on Taylor to tire him out? Because if he doesn't, he's going to get outboxed and suffer his first loss. I think Abraham has everything going for him coming into the fight, but he's traditionally been so economical with his punches that I wonder if he won't let Taylor steal the fight by simply allowing him to last the distance.

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
This all adds into what looks like a great last 3rd of boxing for us
Haye-Vitali
Floyd-JMM
Abraham-Taylor
Froch-Dirrell
Kessler-Ward
Pac-Cotto
Bute-Andrade II
Dawson-Johnson II
Considering its only July that's pretty damn good I think.

I think welterweight is still a deeper division, but 122/126 sure is getting deep.

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
Anyone else think Boxing as a whole could benefit from going this way with these mini tournaments?
Personally i think this is brilliant and cannot wait.
I heard Froch could earn $50-60 million if he can come out on top:cool:

If he wins this tournament Calzaghe will HAVE to come back and shut him up, his thunder will have well and truly been stolen.

I wonder if JC would come back? He'd be what; 42 or around there? I wonder if he could do it, or would? Guess that's putting the cart before the horse though; Froch ain't winning that whole thing. And if he does God save us from you.

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
I love this idea but i'm expecting some pretty dull fights to start us off. I in no way see how taylor thinks he can beat abraham, i hate to see anyone injured but i almost wouldn't mind if he had to pull out. I like jermain but all abraham will do is hold his guard high let taylor punch nothing get tired then get knocked out. Taylor's only real chance is to have them drop it down to a six rounder. And although some might not agree i see direll pissing us all off and potshot'in froch all damn night. And the rare times froch will get the chance to do damage ask that chin checker kat stevens what direll will do. Direll is more than content i belive to have the whole arena booing and take a decision if needed he'll revert, but i doubt he'll loose.

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
Wouldn't it be awesome if HBO had to try to one-up Showtime with a list for a tournament with some of these names (but would have to include Winky):
Roy Jones
Winky Wright
Bernard Hopkins
Kelly Pavlik
Lucian Bute
Andrade
Paul Williams
Mundine
Miranda
Sturm
John Duddy
Hell I want Kassim Ouma in the tournament against Duddy.

To be honest I'd much rather see the Showtime tourney than any of that lot. That looks like the reserves.
I think one super tournament is enough for now, I don't want to be overloaded. This will be plenty interesting for now, and I hope that maybe in another few months, once this one is underway they consider getting another one going.
HBO still has a great mini tournament of its own remember
Floyd vs Marquez
Pacquiao vs Cotto
Winners meet in the final to fight for it all.
No fight out there eclipses a potential Pacquaio Mayweather showdown.

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
Let's hope it works and is a massive success. They should do the same with all the prospects out there and put them on Boxing After Dark-type shows. The more I think about this tournament the more amazed I am about it, not least that it wasn't pulic knowledge till a couple of weeks ago. If it even lasts until the end of the first round before it falls apart it'll be great.

It is great, really just what boxing could use right now. I just hope we're not all being set up for a disappointment if this whole thing somehow implodes.;D
They should do this with the Heavyweights just for comic relief.

AA probably was the hardest hitting middleweight out there when he fought at 160 if his power translates and he can catch JT then that is all she wrote. On the other hand, JT's people must know that all he has to do is be a little more economical using his energy and be content to win rounds on the cards. JT can win a decision against AA using his reach and speed, but AA's power may test JT's will. It would be a big upset if JT won this one.
Dirrell over Froch by boring unanimous decision may be the right prediction. However, Froch is willing to put it on the line; we've seen it now a couple of times. Also, Froch's win over Pascal is even more impressive after seeing Pascal edge Diaconu. Pascal was no slouch in the speed department either and for that matter, neither was JT. Froch figured them out. Why shouldn't he figure out Dirrell? Is Dirrell that much faster? Froch will be his most difficult match yet, that much is clear. Dirrell shouldn't be Froch's. If Dirrell engages Froch, Froch may be blast him out.
Ward v. Kessler is a good first round match. At this point, I like Ward.
-
Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
It would be really interesting if Ward/Dirrell get matched up at some point in this tourney. There's a lot of backstory going into that one.
This is great for boxing every match is important.

Allan Green's predictions: Allan Green Breaks Down The Super Six, Talks Pavlik - Boxing News
AA over JT
MK over AW
CF over AD (although he is unsure about this one)

It wouldn't be saying much really. But seriously; it would be fun to see if Haye would join and put Peter, Chambers, Arreola in there. At last make them stay in shape. Maybe they could get Haye to do it and actually fight for once; somehow I doubt it though.

Re: Dates set for first round of Super Middleweight Tourney
If you do a H'weight one it would not have all the best boxers in as the Klitschko's would not fight each other.

;D at Allan Green wondering why Pavlik is reluctant to come up in weight to fight him when he's come up in weight for Hopkins and Taylor, you're Allan Green, that's why, it seems so obvious ;D
I don't really disagree with his views on the tournament though, although it doesn't seem like he picked a winner in the Froch fight. I've come around to thinking Dirrell will win but he could fade and get pulled into a fight and lose.
