The Ring Magazine - who still buys it ??
TKO live from his sick bed...
Went to get latest Ring magazine from Smiths today and realised something – I don’t really read it any more.
My last dozen or so are barely touched. I just tend to flick through them on the bus \ train, look at the ratings (always – though their website is more up to date) and the other stories I am familiar with already from the Ring site and other boxing sites.
I have never missed a copy of the Ring since 1991 and am now wondering if its worth continuing given their site etc - which I am on 3-4 times a week. One of the main problems has always been the fact that it’s so far behind, eg this month there is a report on the Froch v Taylor fight , but that’s the nature of a monthly publication.
It’s £4.95 in UK – not sure how much in USA , but as magazines go that ain’t cheap.
I am going to continue getting it for foreseeable future but can defo see a time I will stop bothering with the magazine altogether. Anyone else stooped bothering with it ?
Ps don’t get me wrong – for me it is and always will be the Bible of Boxing and their ratings and champions are the ones I go by.

I dont buy it, dont really like the format. The best magazine for my needs is Boxing News shits on the Ring and Boxing Monthly imo.

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
Not for the last six months or so, it's expensive and bloody hard to find
-
Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
I still buy it. Got to support the bible of boxing. However, magizines in general have become less relevant in this new digital age.

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
Who needs it? In my opinion, the online writers are better than the ones who write for the Ring, and its rankings suck to the max (where is Juan Manuel Lopez?). Their writers are tied into the BWAA which in turn is tied into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, and that makes me very sketchy about who is beholden to whom. Moreover, The Ring is now owned by you know who.
The whole thing has an odor of spoiled tuna to it. I won't give them a penny for it.

I download it, the same with all magazines. In this economy I'm trying to cut costs here and there.

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
Subscription gets renewed every year

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
Depends on the month and if the mag is worth keeping after reading.....
I get all the boxing news I need off the net or in my email from promoters no need to pay $7 for out of date news

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??

Agreed on the ratings they are the most legit but today that isn't saying much is it?:-\

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
I would love for somebody to specifically point out just one single writeup, ad, ranking, favorable article ANYTHING AT ALL that has changed since Golden Boy bought Ring Magazine?!!? It's such a BS accusation. Isn't it better that somebody who gives a crap about boxing owns the mag as opposed to some corporating that just views it as a numbers of subscrptions or ad revenue?
I have been buying Ring Mag since 1990 and have boughten past issues off EBay and now have a complete collection going back to Jan 1970. I still buy it every month and read it from cover to cover.
-
Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
I recently got a copy to show my coworkers what was going on in boxing.
Mayweather/Marquez was on the cover. So I got to tell them remember that PPV I was going to get and invite ya'll over to watch? It's postponed and found a lot of the info dated.
I think a way they could become more relevant is to include more prospects, focus on the future to keep others interested. If someone
was new to boxing they would think there are only about 20 boxers
in the whole sport.

Where from? PM me.

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
I have a collection of the old ones that I sell from time to time, but anything from the last few years makes a goods carpet for my cat. As for their rankings, everyone thinks they are good because they are being hyped by HBO and other networks and by writers from the BWAA. It's a self-engrandizing loop of sheer BS. Max's eyes pop out when he talks about the Ring rankings and Farhood (who is an official of the BWAA) practically swoons when he talks about them.
Why do they have Valuev rated # 5 in the Heavyweight Division. John Ruiz is #8. Alexander Dimitrenko is # 10. Huh?
Julio Cesar Miranda at #9 in the flyweights? Huh?
Silence Mabuza rated high as a Batamweight. WOW!!
Joel Casamayor NUMBER TWO. You gotta be kidding me.
They have one guy doing Thailand amd one guy doing the Philipinees.
No, I don't buy thier rankings for one minute. They do not reflect the kind of research I expect, nor do they reflect much knowledge of Asian and/or fighters from the countries in Africa.

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
Yeah but no other organization keeps track of the lineal/legitimate champions. So if nothing else, boxing needs them for that.
-
Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
I used to get it every month but now that has gone up to almost 9.00 dollars I might get it twice a year. Anything I need I can read it on the internet now anyways. The state of the game is 1 of my favorite issues and when the Ring Almanac comes out I'll read that.
-
Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
I buy it occassionally, it does get quite dated, however, that is offset by the fact that the writing in the magazine is generally of a higher standard than that online (Dougie Fischer-don't get me started). I don't believe in any way that they've sold out to Golden Boy though. Their ratings divisionally seem pretty good, although I do think the P4P list at times gets a bit illogical & based on popularity (Nonito Donaire in 7th)

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
No doubt.Prior to that twat Katrina....I had monthly issues from 89' and on.After it I had sixteen years worth of water logged printed pulp sitting at the storage unit.....just could not throw them away :shakehead:
But Hey.I saved the tapes.Fortunately they still sell key back issues.Nothing will ever beat Boxing Illustrated though. loved that read.Prior to the "Internets" :bucktooth: ha,they were a MUST to know what was going on.

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
When I worked at a grocery store I used to grab it for my lunch break, spill all kinds of condiments and drinks on it and then put it back on the shelf. Not sure if that counts.

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
I buy my newspapers at Borders books which is around the corner from my house and about half the time they have The Ring and I'll buy it. Funny I think I have one that's supposed to be for August and I bought it in June. They are weird. The layout and sections are outdated imo. I think they shouldn't dedicate 20 pages every magazine forecasting fights that will have already happened by the time people get their issues. It isn't a bad read but it could be a whole lot better.

Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
I buy issues with Pacquiao in it after every BIG win;D
-
Re: The Ring Magazine - who atill buys it ??
It's part of our monthy groceries, it is expensive as hell though, like ten bucks. I thought any mag over eight bucks including tax had to have tits in it but ah well my baby has nice one's anyhow, probably better it doesn't anyway or the first lady probably wouldn't bring it home every month.

They must come in handy when you're rubbing one out in the bathroom ;D
I have to say reading the latest issues of Ring & Boxing Monthly, I've come to the conclusion that the standard of writing is far better in Boxing Monthly. They are far more analytical than Ring & they don't have annoying writers who think putting on some kind of written tough guy act makes them a better boxing pundit

Re: The Ring Magazine - who still buys it ??
I Had All The Ring Mag From 1965 Until 2ooo..i Came To Live In Australia And Instead Of Putting Them In Storage.i Left With A Friend..needless To Say They Were All Lost..for Nostalgic Reasons Alone I Was Devastated..every Magazine Held A Memory,,now I Just Get All The Boxing News Off Diff Boxing Sites As Well As Having Emails Sent To Me..i Tried Buying The Ring Here In Australia..but It Was,nt The Same ..also It Costs $25.00 An Issue..i Think The Magazine Itself Will Slowly Die Off As You Can Now Go To The Ring Site And Get Everything You Need..

Re: The Ring Magazine - who still buys it ??
Stopped buying it years ago, especially after the new issues started hashing out dated news.
-
Re: The Ring Magazine - who still buys it ??
I used to buy it but stopped because they would carry previews to fights that had already occurred. I don't like paying a fiver for outdated news, so i just get it all off the internet. Sometimes buy Boxing Monthly and Weekly, but not often
-
Re: The Ring Magazine - who still buys it ??
i stoped reading it a while ago now, just get the boxing news on a friday.
-
Re: The Ring Magazine - who still buys it ??
Why buy Ring when you can get all you need on this site:confused:
-
Re: The Ring Magazine - who still buys it ??
I don't bother with it due to it being at least 6 weeks behind. It's never relevant to what's happening now. Boxing Monthly and sometimes Boxing News for me.
-
Re: The Ring Magazine - who still buys it ??
I started buying The Ring recently I have the last 4 issues. They have their place in my bathroom magazine rack. At $9 a pop I do feel a bit gouged on the price, but it's not bad reading. The photography is great and I like to read about the prospects they have in there. This site has much better articles and the news is fresher, but it's the Ring, can't not have it.
As an aside, I find it funny the symbolism of the newest cover. It's a head shot of ODLH and his head doesn't fit on the cover (it's too big).
