Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
My thoughts: This was premeditated and well-thought out assault with intent to do serious bodily harm. Those responsible ruined the career and life of a prospect. They may also have contributed to a possible suicide. Whatever the case, I have minimal sympathy for Resto-and none whatsoever for the monster Panama Lewis who has no remorse. He should never again be allowed in a boxing gym Resto likley will never join Billy in Heaven, and has a better chance to join Lewis in Hell.
Never forget Billy Collins Junior

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Collins_(boxer)
In 2007, Resto made a tearful apology to Collins-Nile for his role in the scheme. He also admitted that his hand wraps had been soaked in plaster of Paris before the fight. This caused them to harden into plaster casts like those used to set broken bones. The hand wraps were never confiscated and did not figure into the official investigation of the tampering incident. However, the net result was that between the plaster casts and unpadded gloves, Resto was striking Collins with rocks.[3] At a 2008 press conference, Resto not only admitted to knowing that Lewis had tampered with the gloves, but had done so at least twice before.[4] The 1983 incident and subsequent aftermath is covered in the HBO-aired documentary Assault in the Ring.[5]

His face looked as wrecked as Cottos after the Margarito fight

Jesus man. That short vid posted by saddo showed clearly that each punch was sickening. If anyone else has any link to the full program it would be appreciated!

Re: Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
Back then, Resto had a NYC neighborhood following and was a tough but light-fisted fighter. He was more a slick cutie than anything else. As I recall, he had good success in the NY Golden Gloves.
Collins would have taken him apart without the deadly scam.

Re: Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
I thought the documentary was good for boxing in a way. To shine a light on some shady doing's behind the scenes. As angry as I felt at Resto I couldn't help but be sympathetic in the end. You know he did do the crime he did his time he lived in a fucking ditch for ten years afterward while Panama kind of lived it up still making a name for himself training fighter's. He did take a career but look at his life afterward. He mine as well have been dead. I do believe in second chances and fuck let Resto have another shot by doing what he loves at least let him train fighter's in a gym like Panama is allowed to do.What I was getting so pissed at was how Panama kept calling Resto son. If I wear Resto I would have simply beat the piss out of Panama and said no father of mine would have let his son sleep in a fucking ditch. Sell one of those dozens of gold chains and ring's and give me the fucking money you piece of shit. Another thing that would piss me off was when Panama kept saying "look at me". I was saying the whole time "well take your fucking glasses off"!! you fucking punk and then finally Resto mumbled it take of your glasses. It does play on the mind a little bit but Resto did his time and should be forgiven. And for fuck sake let this case be open again for Collins' family and give these people some fucking money.

Couldn't have said it any better myself.
Resto has been a broken man every since that night and went to prison for it and lost everything.
He deserves a second chance.
Panama Lewis on the other hand is a rich, lying, scum bag with no remorse for the incident and no care for Resto what so ever.
It was sad seeing Resto try and confront Lewis, becus it was clear that Resto is a broken man and could only mumble "take off your glasses" and "fuck you".
Luis Resto should get some of the royalties from this film.
You catch the part where the documenter was sayin he had to pay Panama Lewis every time he interviewed his no good ass?
Fuckin scum of the earth.
-
Re: Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
Resto looks like a suicide waiting to happen. He's has broken as a man can get
-
Re: Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
I was tired of all the sympathy Resto got because he's a "broken man"; fukk him and Lewis. Yeah Resto finally came clean, lol ok, but only when he had the transcripts from taped conversations put in front of him.
He's only sorry because he got caught, like most people who do sh#t things and get caught for it and then cry for forgiveness. He's real, real sorry but not because he feels for what he did to Collins, just that he got found out and ruined his own career. He says he thinks about that fight every night; I bet he does. They probably would have all laughed it up that fateful night, how fukked up Collins was and ending his undeafeated career, had those gloves not been found out; all a big joke hahaha. Too bad they were too stupid about it.
Lewis should have never been allowed in a gym again, not just banning from cornr work. In a way I feel for Resto because if he wouldn't have gone along with it then Panama might have dumped him and his already journeyman career would have probably been over; but he could have taken the right path and instead chose to play along. But he served his time so whatever; I still don't feel sorry for him that much.
And I don't believe a bit of it about the plaster, seemed like he was just trying to add more onto his story just to shift more focus to Panama. I don't see how Collins would have never made it through that fight with padding taken out AND plaster in the gloves; his face would have been broken to bits and a bloody pulp imo.
The both of them can suffer more for all I care.

Re: Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
I live in OZ and was unaware of this tragic event, i know of Panama Lewis of course through the infamous " give me the bottle" story with Aaron Pryor.
This now casts even greater doubt on the career of Aaron Pryor.
I hope this never happens again.

Welcome back to Kansas! This has cast a shadow, nay an eclipse, for a long time. Panama Lewis is a sack of s#it.
You know though, I never hear this brought up when people talk about the Pryor/Arguello fight.

Re: Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
i was a bit annoyed with the guy who made the documentary trying to basically make Resto the victim of the whole situation, and also his blatant lack of respect for Billy Collins Sr's wishes not to be any part of the documentary pissed the fuck out of me, i got the impression that Resto's guilt is finally getting the best of him, and that he is sincerely looking for forgiveness, but Panama Lewis on the other hand, the fucker seemed as if it didn't bother him one bit, he's a master manipulater and doesn't give a fuck about anyone, hope the fat bastard, who looks like if he is the first pregnant man might i add, rots in hell
loved the part that when he was watching the Cotto/Judah fight, all smiles while Judah was being effective, then looked like a stick went up his ass when Cotto stopped him lol went something like
;D:):confused::-\:(

Yeah, it was bad, but don't get carried away in order to prove the point. Cheating in order to win? Sure. Reckless disregard and negligence? Sure. But premeditated intent to do serious bodily harm? That's a tad melodramatic, and a spin on the facts.

Re: Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
Did anybody else find it ironic to hear Bob Arum say in a voiceover in the very beginning...
"What he did was inexcusable, he should be banned from this sport forever, there shouldn't be any forgiveness".
This was made before the whole Margacheato incident, and it would be great if Bob's words came back to haunt him, so I sure hope the California State Athletic Commission watched this, and heard Bob say that.

I've been reading up on this story all day, i love boxing, i love most sports, but this is has rocked me big time. The most blatant cheating i have ever seen, and now without doubt i realise why CutMe Mick was so skeptical of Aaron Pryor's win against Arguello in what is now known as 'bottlegate'.

Sorry if you thought I was digging on you. I wasn't.
If you think about it though, in ten years, we'll all remember Mararito/Mosely but nobody else will.

Re: Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
I haven't seen it yet but I find it hard to believe that I'll feel that much sympathy for Resto and I usually think of myself as pretty forgiving. I guess I can't get over how he acted in the ring after the fight. He didn't look like somebody conflicted over his actions to say the least. He looked like he was on top of the world (hugging Collins for fucks sake, that makes me sick everytime I see it) and then was sad he got caught.
And maybe their intent wasn't to do "serious bodily harm", maybe they just only cared about the win and thought they'd get an early knockout but they sure as fuck didn't care if they did serious bodily harm, oh well shit happens.
I'm sure Panama comes off worse. He probably comes off so bad that Resto looks good compared. Maybe it will change my mind a bit, I doubt it though. I would say I'll watch it with an open mind but that's laughable.

Re: Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
All the people who have no sympathy for Resto I can see where you are coming from.
But it was over 25 years ago and he is not the same human being he was then that he is now.
He's 53 fuckin years old now for God sakes and poverty stricken.
Have none of you ever drove your cars drunk?
What if you would have killed somebody?
So then 25 years later if you are a broken destitute mess then there should be no mercy or sympathy for you?
Obviously what Resto did is much worse than drinkin and driving but still.
Sure the young street thug who did that to Collins deserves no mercy, but the 53 year old Grandfather of today, well excuse me for having a little sympathy for him.
The man is a broken mess and obviously not a criminal mastermind by any stretch of the imagination.
He's an uneducated poor kid from the Bronx who fucked up and did a terrible thing.
But he's an old man now.
-
Re: Assault In The Ring on HBO last night
Pity for a broken man? NO. Not me. He's a broken man but he took indirectly a life and broke a whole family. Resto chose to let LEwis remove the padding from his glove and to put plaster on his hands, he did CHOSE IT, he's RESPONSIBLE for it and though I wouldn't go as far as saying he deserves to be broken for the rest of his life, I will say that I have no sympathy for him whatsoever. As for LEwis, this Don King kinda of beast, he got away wayyyy tooo easily with what he has done and I seriously hope that somewhere in a dark alley, fate will meet up with him again and makes end meet the old school way.

Uhmm wasn't his face destroyed and never the same again? And Collins wife saying he had catract's and blind spots. I can feel your anger and we may never know the entire story but once they brought up how there was side bets going on with the cubans wanting Resto to win. Hey man who's to say they didn't approach Resto and say "We are going to do this and there is nothing you can do about it". OF course we don't know this but shit anything is possible. Resto did do a shitty thing and it was attempted murder him being a veteran at that time. At least let the man be he did a shitty thing and he apologized for it and he does seem very sincere.

Yeah man his face was a fukkin mess, no doubt. I'm just saying, and maybe people on here who know better than me can help, that I would think without padding it's bad enough and would cause all that damage alone; but plaster too? I'd of thought his face would be cracked open and teeth missing etc. I'm not saying the damage wasn't extensive; just that it would have looked like a pipe bomb went off. It's just my opinion, help me out dude.
Either way bro'; that whole "oh by the way, he put plaster on as well as taking the padding out" seemed forced and spur of the moment; IMO. If he was trying to make Lewis look more despicable he also made himself look the same.

Yeah man; he did his time, state time and more. I don't wish bad on him; just saying my way isn't to feel bad for him if more does come his way.
Hell in a way I do feel for him being a goat for Lewis and maybe being coerced into the whole thing, fearing his career would be taken if he didn't go along. We all make mistakes, so I'm not trying to ride the morality train while pissing on everyone; just you gotta' wonder how sorry he is and what he's sorry for: hurting Billy or hurting his career? I suppose as we get older we tend to live with regret, if we have any sort of soul, so maybe he is truly sorry for hurting Billy; who knows?
I wish him well; but if he gets worse I won't give a sh#t. Sorry if that bothers people here.

Although, there are a couple pathetic turds here that seem to believe that I don't exist, and that I'm just an alt account for Danny G, who is a guy.
But those with a brain, a soul, and a heart, knows that's not true. ;) ;D

To say resto didn't know is complete bs. did you see the worried look on resto's face when billy collins father started saying 'there's something wrong with the gloves'. He knew all along. he even waved lewis over because he knew he had been caught.
