Guzman-Funeka in the works!
A bout between former two-division world champion Joan Guzman (29-0, 17 KOs) and former world title challenger Ali Funeka (30-2-2, 25 KOs) has been sanctioned and approved by the IBF for the two to battle for the vacant lightweight title. A date and site of the fight will be revealed once the bout is finalized. Guzman, who recently signed with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, last fought in December 2008 in his native Dominican Republic where he won a unanimous decision over Ameth Diaz in an IBF title eliminator. Funeka last fought in February of this year where he dropped a close majority decision loss to Nate Campbell. Campbell was stripped of his title prior to the bout for coming in over the lightweight limit, leaving the title vacant. Fernando Angulo (22-5, 14 KOs) and Yuri Romanov (21-2, 14 KOs) were scheduled to have fought for the vacant title this past weekend but the word is that Romanov had trouble securing his visa to enter into the United States in time for the bout.

Fantastic much up for my boy Joan Guzman, even with his slick style it will be hard for him. To counter the long/lean Ali Funeka. Toung fight i see Joan Guzman winning a close decision.

Re: Guzman-Funeka in the works!
Funeka will be a very very tough fight, and we'll get to see how Guzman can deal with this taller fighter, he can't hope to fight on the outside and he doesn't have Nate Campbell's power. Funeka does have that height and power, but I guess with Mayweather Sr in his corner Guzman is going to have a strategy similar to Mayweather's in the Castillo fight
-
Re: Guzman-Funeka in the works!
Guzman will win the fight, but lose the title on the scales. I love Guzman's style and I had really high hopes for him, but if he actually goes through with this and makes weight, I'll be shocked.

Re: Guzman-Funeka in the works!
its good to see guzman fighting again, he really needs to get on with his career hes to dam talented not to, for me his skills are worthy of a top 5 p4p ranking maybe number 1 some day, he has got to have the fights and raise his profile abit first so he can reel in the big players for a fight to prove his worth

I actually have said for quite awhile, that Joan Guzman is one of the few boxers that could beat Manny Pacquiao. But he's wasted his career he's what 33 ? with only 29 fights.

I've said this before, but I feel Guzman will end up becoming just another in the long line of boxing "what if's..." All the skill in the world but he just can't seem to put everything together. He could have been widely considered one of boxing's finest fighters by now.

yeah, I'm not worried about Guzman being shot by any means but the time is ticking on him, especially if he doesn't take care of his body enough to make the weight, hopefully he will.

Im a big fan of Floyd Mayweather Jr, which is probably why i like Joan Guzman. Because you can see the similarities are there, but im not sure bro. I agree he's still fresh but his style is based alot on speed, and whether or not he hasn't had alot of wars. He's still gonna be slowing down soon which is a shame, because he really should be a P4P fighter.

Re: Guzman-Funeka in the works!
CLo he's made 135 since bowing out of the Campbell fight.
VERY good fight this is, hope it's made.

I say there is still time, and i would love there tobe still time too, really like Guzman, good times and i'm glad he's gonna be back.... Funeka is a tough tough challenge thogh, Nate only squeeked by him.
Good match-up. Let hope he makes weight......

Guzman has a very similar defensive style to Floyd but is far more wild, crazy, winging and macho which makes him very different from Floyd and more exciting to watch, IMO.

Yea i agree i also think people who say Joan Guzman is boring, are nuts i think he has a pretty exciting style. And given the right opponent, i think he could be in a FOTY candidate. I think he would of beaten Nate Campbell handily, and i can't see anyone troubling him at 135 except Ali Funeka.

I think he's already reached that stage.
At his age, with his apparent lack of dedication, there's far more chance he'll get beaten, by a fighter way below his talent level, than do great things. Which is a shame.

No argument here. The Campbell fight could've been his last chance. I'd love to see Funeka lay him out.

Re: Guzman-Funeka in the works!
good fight. this is what guzman should have done before, fight top contenders. i favor the lanky funeka on the strength of his destruction win over another slick boxer in zahir raheem. imo funeka will have no problem with the slick style of guzman.
-
Re: Guzman-Funeka in the works!
That's possible Fenster but if he comes out and does to Funeka what he is capable of doing, Guzman can be a top guy at 135.
-
Re: Guzman-Funeka in the works!
Solid fight and for Guzman sake its time to get back at it and not let it pass him by....I'm not sure Funeka has the beard to press forward and he should use that mantis range and outside ability...close wise,Guzmans hiatus, etc. If he can get Guzman to step forward maybe half the time,I go with Funeka by a few.

Oh yeah he was beating Raheem who was slick, that knockout came after the bell though but I didn't see the fight changing. But I don't see that happening to Guzman

but it is also a recipe for disaster. he thinks he still have his power which he clearly left at 122. he tends to open up and square up which he did against soto. if funeka catches him then we will see how much chin he has considering he is in his mid 30's

I think Guzman can beat Fuenka no problem. I'd still back Guzman against ANYONE until he's beaten. Just saying the way his career has gone it wouldn't be a surprise if he turns up soon looking old, and never lands a marquee fight.
-
Re: Guzman-Funeka in the works!
If Guzman doesn't fuck up somehow with this fight, either not make the weight or not be anywhere near what he can be in the ring, he'll fuck the next fight up. There's something missing in his mental makeup.
