i want to glean as much possible knowledge on boxing theory as i can, i feel i got a start, but that is just the beginning. i would hate to throw a fighter to the wolves or worse miss something or make a fighter worry about anything other than fighting.

no more for my own continuing education on boxing, i would teach muay thai before boxing....that's my stronger suit...thanx for the vote of confidence Andre.... but i want a more concise clollection of the physics of boxing,which is very dif. from muay thai.
To be fair iceman, it was a pretty big broad question. Doubt you'll get a whole lot out of one thread or a few posts. Rocky had good advice, and Chris has put a lot of work into that section, providing lots of reference stuff, great timeless posts, books, articles. You'll get a ton more out of going to those links in that section I'd think.
When it comes to specifics then this is the place for opinion, and even then Chris still hooks people up with specifics from there.
oh no doubt. i forget sarcasm doesn't translate here i MEANT no disrespect was joking for Andre...but yeah i was hopeing on some book type reference on phisics of pure boxing and the science behind it...
ahh k, I got ya. Well Chris is the man to see. Surprisingly, I am interested in so many things physics and science related and forever reading and looking them up, and just realized now seeing your post, the one area I haven't bothered to consider it more is boxing, where it'd actually be most applicable to me . lol

no more like most boxers just honing your craft. on a side note i have noticed that in the Wash. D.C. area, the trainers for the amateurs are not all that professional. my interest isn't in pro level training anyway, too involved i like working the pads with the thai guys esp when they are new, they like all the different combo's i can feed them and mine tend to be different because i add a lot of the stuff boxers would use

Besides that, if you're looking for the theory side of boxing, that is how to think and box smart, I recommend reading Thomas Tabin's posts. Greynotsoold has a lot of excellent posts on the logistics of boxing, and Andre and Scrap give a different angle of looking at things. There are a lot of good contributions by many of the posters here, so it's always good to browse. You never know what you might find.
Also be sure to check out the free ebook thread, the Haislet book is a really good how-to book, the Jack O'Brien book has a lot of good information as well.
If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask.

I'm a certified now iceman. Got it done this summer. Is just a day program and almost anyone can do it. Even at my age, I had more ring experience, and experience around the ring then more then 3/4s of the class lol. I didn't get it to be a coach per se, but more so that I can work the corner and we can travel now with as little as 3 people to shows, as it is cheaper for us to travel that way. Learned some stuff, but really, is more just so I can throw a towel over my shoulder and it be legit with amateur boxing rules.
Most anything you learn, you learn by being in there and doing. Being at the club and with time. Certification is just a piece of paper, imo.
That's a scary thought, that anyone who possesses that piece of paper can become responsible for the lives and safety of anyone who's interested in taking up boxing. Of course, there must be people who go through it and know what they're doing, but I shudder when thinking about the rest of the people, and by your estimate is more than 75% of the class. :-\Quote:

The reason they have it is to make sure people know the rules and guidelines and I suppose promote safety. That is a step better then professional boxing where you don't even need formal training. But it is remarkably lax. And yea, a lot of the people were clueless. Most had never stepped in a ring. Is was surprising. That is first level certification, and you move thru the levels. To become a ref. and so on. They are making new rules currently, changing the system a bit as of Aug. 9th, but no idea what that'll be. Just know anything before that date is grandfathered and roles into higher levels unaffected.

Aside from saftey,stretching and the other more set patterns in training (that all vary to suit the fighter): a great trainer should be able to see the gifts that each fighter brings naturally and will tune those gifts in and sharpen up those natural talents so they outweigh any inherent weakness.
great Andre, thanx and i agree, i have seen soo many trainers train each fighter the same way, i agree initially using a two hands up guard is a good idea, but for some later the philly shell may be useful or an archie moore type guard. i do think a lot of drills can be used for everyone to develop attributes but putting the attributes of any given boxer at the forefront is an art
