http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJEvg_fv6VcYouTube - 2009.9.4-Marvin Sonsona vs. Jose Lope(4-10)
What can you say about this kid. He has a long way to go. :)
Re: Marvin Marvelous Sonsona - 19 Yrs Old WBO World Champion
I was already impressed with him when he KO the Thailander in his last fight. I said then that he fights like Nonito Jr.
But this Fight with a tough Lopez was an impressive one for a 19 year old. He has the Power , The poise, the chin, the stamina & the Cajones at this age. Once He settled with his right & matured weight, he'll be hard to beat.
I'll Pick Sonsona over Rafa & Vasquez once Sonsona matures to 122 /126 lbs.

no way 2 flip champs are fighting each other. if one is not a title holder that may be possible but if both are champs i dunno if they'll be facing each other coz if that's the case they'll be hurting their country's pride more than their own ego and flips are passionate about their country's pride.
Re: Marvin Marvelous Sonsona - 19 Yrs Old WBO World Champion
anyway cheers for sonsona, our 5th world champ. maybe he should changed his moniker "marvelous' as hagler already owns it. why not "sonsona of a gunna?"
Re: Marvin Marvelous Sonsona - 19 Yrs Old WBO World Champion
Marvin Sonsona definitey has better skills on his 14th pro fight in comparison to Pacquiao's at the same stage in his boxing career. He has a tremendous future, if things are handled properly.

Definitely!! These upcoming fighters from the philippines was the Product of Pacquiao's success. Boxing becomes the #1 sports for Pinoys all over the world. Young guns were all inspired with Pac success. Even my 6 year old son was into it.
For Sonsona, he's blessed with natural Punching Power. He's too long for anybody from Fly-superbantam. Once he's filled he'll probably will be fighting at 130-147 weight classes.
Once he improve he's conditioning by fighting at the comfortable weight class, he'll dominate. Right now I'm impressed. He just need to polish his defense and also use more of Jabs & Right hook.

Great performance by Sonsona. Lopez wasn't elite. But he was no push over. Beating him was great accomplishment. Especially this early in his career
Re: Marvin Marvelous Sonsona - 19 Yrs Old WBO World Champion
Great win over a solid vet! Interested to see where he goes from here, 115 still has a lot of talent. There's the potential for some great match-ups to prove himself against
Re: Marvin Marvelous Sonsona - 19 Yrs Old WBO World Champion
Sonsona looks like he won't be able to make weight long. But man, he's got some serious power in the left. Lopez while not the best the division had to offer still was a serious opponent. I was impressed Sonsona was able to work through the adversity. I'd like to see a little more right hand, but for his age I was quite impressed.

"He surprised me that he hit so hard. Especially the power of his left hand. I didn't expect that". Jose Lopez.

Great win for marvin Sonsona, not only that he has the power but he also have the stamina to last the whole fight eventhough all of his fights lasted only 5 rounds.
He aslo shows he has the chin for not even being staggered when Lopez connected with some great shots.

although Lopez was IMO the weakest of the champs at 115, he was still a solid gritty fighter, who fought better than his age would let you think, it's a great solid win for Sonsona especially this early in his career, but i gotta disagree with the whole Sonsona/Donaire thing, IMO it's still way too early in his career for that, the last thing i'd want to see is a kid with this much talent to be ruined due to being moved along too quickly like Vargas was, but yea gonna be watchin this kid for sure
Re: Marvin Marvelous Sonsona - 19 Yrs Old WBO World Champion
He looks damn good and damn promising but I would wait a bit before coating him with sugar from head to toe; i remember a Boom Boom Bautista that was supposed to be the next big thing and 2 crucial things un-railed him on his way to the top of the mountain; a dubious chin and a very doubtful mental strength, I want to see these things tested more before seeing him as the next big thing but for the moment, I agree, the way he does, he looks good.

i agree, i'd rather see him develop slowly and reach his full potential, i say give him 2 years and he'll be ready for Donaire

If I'm ever a professional boxer I am going to wear stockings like his.
Re: Marvin Marvelous Sonsona - 19 Yrs Old WBO World Champion
He seems to have very nice natural power.

He has better skills, but he doesn't have the same blistering speed that allows PAcquiao to overcome his technical mistakes. This kid is a work in progress, but I think Marquez or Vazquez would eat him up... then again I wasn't that keen on Pacquiao until around the third Morales fight when he showed he could actually use his speed properly.
Re: Marvin Marvelous Sonsona - 19 Yrs Old WBO World Champion
Pacquiao was a 16-year old flyweight, with a record of 13-1, with 5 KOs, and without a belt nor a title yet, after 14 pro fights.
That indicates that when Manny knocked people out with regularity, it was a little bit later in his career when compared to that of Marvin Sonsona's.
This by the way is by no means intended to mislead folks into thinking that Marvin is hereby being installed as the next... whatever, this is but purely a matter of "factoids for the curious", like me!
**********
I am thinking that the absence of a blistering hand speed in Marvin Sonsona's arsenal is mainly more of him being interested in delivering KO's than mixing it up, as his present professional record shows, 14-0, 12 by way of KO's. Add to this, the discipline and tenacity in the gym to enable him to deliver a high level cardio game come fight night, is at the moment non-existent.
Just as he was about to get out of the gate before the Lopez title fight, Marvin was loosely described as "a young man who likes to knock people out but hates to get hit", I believe that this depiction reinforces this speculation.
With his height and understandable reach advantage, having a 5'7" stature in that lower weight category, Marvin can afford to set his power shots with ease. He can load up and blast as he pleases.... but of course this is no longer a given, as his level of opposition will surely register a marked improvement from hereon!
He needs to keep a gym work at par with that of the elites if he aspires to be like one of them in the future. Physical attributes got him to this point.. however, it is by no means the end to all that hardwork and expect dividends to just pour in! If anything, it is just the beginning.... that is, if he intends to stay with an endurance at the top!
