Where does Marquez go from here?

Marquez is 36 and not getting any younger, so I just wondered what you all think he should do next?

He could just retire, but I wouldn't mind seeing him go to 140 and picking a belt up there before calling it a day. I'm not too sure about Marquez over 135 pounds at all, but it would be great to see him taking on a final weightclass before bowing out.

I don't think bulking up for this fight is going to help his longevity at all, so wouldn't want him to go on too long. Just a fight or maybe two more.

Retire. Marquez took a beating in this fight as well as in the Diaz fight before this and he isnt getting any younger take the money from this fight and enjoy it

I was thinking bout the same thing.

JMM is still the best lightweight there is, he can defend his title or hope for a third match with pac. I think his only chance of getting that match with pac is if pac loses. I dont think that would happen, inevitably imo we will get pac vs floyd for the p4p title.

I'd be willing to put money on him signing up for a fight with Hatton.....

At this point in his career, he'll go where the money is. One or 2 more fights.

He's earned a few more good payoffs. I hope this fight doesn't reflect too badly on it. It may. It was more about Floyd proving, then Marquez failing...so really, hope he can drum up those fights he deserves and say his goodbyes.

Well first of all I'd like to say he proved how great a warrior he was last night. At times it was reminding me of the Infamous "No Mas" fight, but he kept going and getting hurt but coming through the other side and he deserved to hear the final bell, even though I had money on Floyd winning by KO.

As for the question on the thread, I think he either takes on Hatton or goes back to Lightweight. I personally would love to see him fight Katsidis, I think it would be a great and very winnable fight for Marquez and I would certainly pay to see that. Boxing needs some entertaining fights with Gatti sadly gone, this for me would be awesome!

Hatton might likewise be too big for JMM. If Juan can hurt Ricky, then it can be a good fight, despite the variance of the weight divisions where they've been most effective from.

It became obvious pretty quickly that this version of Marquez just did not have the ammunition to deal with Mayweather. Like the tough S.O.B. he is though he carried on trying and he hung in there especially during that 11th round when it looked as though it was getting too much for him.
I would like to see him move down to lightweight and go out with a good win.

What about his chances against Khan? Perhaps Warren would like that fight.

Should Pac lose next month then its a natural fight for both of them so thats what Marquez will be hoping for. It just wont be as big as it should have been.

He should go back to lightweight.

I'd like to see him take a fight at Light-Welter. If Mayweather & Pacquiao couldn't KO him, I simply can't see Bradley, Khan or Alexander doing it.

Problem is none of them are promoted by Golden Boy.

But I think he beats all those guys, he had enough power to get Mayweather's respect. He KO's Khan & Alexander, I think Bradley gets stopped late or Marquez takes a close decision & Urango gets widely out-pointed by him.

I honestly see last night as being about how good Mayweather is rather than Marquez being on the decline as a fighter. His heart is second to none & his skills, conditioning & overall ability would carry him through against the alphabet champs at 140.

Marquez should go back to superfeatherweight or lightweight where his fighting skills are at its maximum best.

Juan can also try to stick around and bang with the lightwelterweights or welterweights, but then again, considering his age, wear-and-tear, and the like, even the patsies in those divisions will glow against him. I'm afraid size-wise, he will continually experience the short end in a mismatch. This I believe, is less than "the" viable option.


I'd say then, that he should ply his obvious talent where the "money fights" for him still lay abundant, for there is not much tenure left in his fighting boots.

To be wise monetarily or financially...when the longevity in one's career is no longer, or when one has already seen the knot that had held for strength in his long rope of a career, that it would just make perfect sense to be so. Would it not?

Great choice of words, Marquez vs. Mayweather was a mismatch and on top of that sisi Floyd did not make weight that 2 pounds ment alot as far as energy and speed for Floyd, no excuses but Floyd should fight someone his own size to claim the 1 P4P. Yes he beat a small guy with a big name, Although Marquez did ask for the fight but he bit more than he can chew. I would personally like to see Marquez Vs. Erick Morales.

Kind of a catch 22 isn't it?

A.Stay where he is and fight guys that are too strong and too big, don't feel his punches.

B. Lose the 12-15 pounds of muscle, drop back down and Struggle with lighter guys because your body is literally eating itself and you have no energy. (RJJ Syndrome)

Agreed. A grudge match between Pacquiao and Marquez at 140 would be huge. I'd watch in a second. Who else is a big fight for Pacquiao if he loses to Cotto? It makes sense.

I'd like to see him back at 135 or i wouldn't mind seeing him try his business at 140.

He certainly has the skills to win a strap there, hell even dominate it.

He certainly beats Urango and would probably beat Khan.

Bradley would be a tough match for him though.

Don't think that one will ever come off now, I reckon that time will jump all over JMM and he will get old very quickly. Pac although not really tested recently does appear to be physically very strong. I could see it being like a Morales type ending to the series.

Marquez has options.

He's still the lightweight champ. He can go back down to 135 and defend against Katsidis, Valero, Soto, etc. He could fight Diaz again at 135 or 140.

He could fight Hatton at 140, although I don't have a ton of interest in that one. Pacquiao is still out there, if Floyd and Shane fight and Manny needs an opponent.

I'm not sure how much Marquez has left, but he should be able to get a decent payday on HBO in his next fight.

yup, that would only happen if pac loses badly to cotto. but at 140 i think pac would spark marquez. i don't think juan belongs anywhere north of the lightweight division and even at lightweight it was obvious he'd already lost some steps. he can take a big money fight against hatton though which i think he'd also lose but would definitely be exciting and a crowd drawer. other than that he should just defend his title at 135 one or a couple of times more and then retire.

That'd be a pretty good WCB fight for the weekend after Mayweather/Mosley.

I would venture to say Marquez just got his career high payday, I hope he takes at least 6 months away from the negotiation table and spends quality time with his family. I think he solidified his lightweight status in beating the lineal champ in Casamayor and his FOTY candidate with Diaz. Light Welter seems the logical place for him to end up, there are plenty of semi-recognizable fighters there he could beat or at least make extremely entertaining fights with Hatton, Holt, Bradley, Torres, Malignaggi, Urango the list is huge.

Campbell - Marquez would be a fantastic fight. Khan is not shaping up to be a very exciting fighter. He was scared to death to engage Katelnik... who is not a big puncher.

Hatton, if anyone, should probably stay retired. He doesn't have the power to compete against WW and he is too drained for LWW. He's a man without a weight class.
