Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
Going by the report of Fightnews it sounds like a bizarre TKO. Sosa gets headbutted unintentionally and is badly hurt and then gets TKO'd. Can anyone who saw the fight shed some light on what happened? Was the butt not seen by the ref?

Congrats Rodel Mayol!
Finally! You're no longer a Rocky Juarez. ;D

Saturday night in Tuxtla Gutierrez in Chiappas, Mexico, Filipino challenger Rodel Mayol (25-4-1, 19 KOs) scored a second round TKO over longtime WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa (37-5, 21 KOs), who was making his 11th defense (in 28 months). After Sosa was badly hurt by an unintentional headbutt, he was dropped again when action resumed and the referee waved it off moments later. Mayol was successful in his fifth attempt at a world title.

What a fukking joke. Sosa deserved better. He needs to push for a rematch.
Really this is the only way Mayol can win a title

Have you seen the fight? I want to know what happened, the fightnews report is very vague.

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
VD is absolutely right, Sosa got fucked over, but if there's not a NC or a rematch after this then it will actually overtake Froch-Dirrell as my robbery of the year.
It was clearly an intentional butt by Mayol. Here's the 2nd round, it skips past the 1st which was an evenish round that I thought Mayol just edged.

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
I've never talked about headbutts this much in my life.
But look at the replay starting at 2:56, Mayol is leaned down throwing a right hand to the body and right after he starts that Sosa jumps in a little bit, if he doesn't do that I don't see how there would be a butt. I've heard there were other butts in the first round so maybe he was trying to but I don't see how you can tell just from that one that it was intentional.
Thinking about it though Mayol does have a habit of leading with his head.
Obviously bad luck for Sosa though.

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
Set up a co-feature, Sosa-Mayol 2 and Montiel-Valdez 2.
-
Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
Agreed Ouma there is no way you can automatically deem that intentional. Sosa jumped in just as he was opening up to throw his right hand, completely accidental. Otherwise, tough break but he had every opportunity to gain a clear head and it didn't look like he ever got comfortable. It's not a Kendall Holt-Ricardo Torres situation. Legit win imo but a rematch should be in order.

Actually, he had very little time, plus in the first round (couldn't find a copy with that) Mayol tried the same thing twice & was warned for it. I mean he did the same against Calderon (I mean how do you clash heads with a guy 5 inches shorter than you continually).
Sosa was given very little time, notice how when the referee times them back in he was on his paunches.
Mayol isn't like Ward, who even though I dislike I don't think was intentionally using his head, Mayol has shown enough form for it, plus he's a complete little shit, like a Filippino Froch. In fact, I can't believe I forgot about him for my 5 most hated fighters. I only hate Froch more than him.

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
That's right I forgot about the Calderon fights. Still Sosa kinda jumped into that particular one ;D Calderon is jumpy too but I'll take your word for it.

Re: Congrats Rodel Mayol!
unintentional my ass, the dude headbutted Calderon left and right, and Calderon is like 5 inches shorter :-X, guess his two wins over Mayol just go to prove he's still the best at 108

It was an intentional butt, that's why the ref took a point. He tried it a few times in the 1st. Sosa deserves a rematch. Although I will say Mayol is a vastly improved fighter from the guy who fought Solis.

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
HHmmm, maybe Mayol was watching Ward tapes....

we already have a thread on this. :p

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
Hope that s:censored: gets overturned
Sosa was f:censored:d from the butt
He should of won a dq & rule the bout a nc
Ref was a chump:vd:

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
i think this was blatant recklessness on mayol's part and he should have been disqualified or the fight should be a no-contest! i think mayol did use his head intentionally as he did against ivan calderon in their two fights. by the way, the mexican press is all over this and are calling mayol a "dirty fighting filipino". harsh words but mayol has proven he is a dirty fighter. the least the WBC can do is make this fight a NC then have the rematch after sosa fully recovers!

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
Mayol does lead with his head alot...unintentional or not shouldnt the referee have to give Sosa som time to recuperate? should be a no contest really Sosa waz hurt badly by the butt.

Wow really? Dam dat sux, makes it alot worst! Should def. be a no contest.

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
No way he should be DQ'd for a headbutt that didn't even look intentional, that's absurd. He should have been given more time if anything but you can't say the ref was on Mayol's side, dude took a point for the first butt of the night and one that you can't say was intentional cause Sosa jumped into him.
-
Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
at the very least, this fight should have been called a no-contest. but since it was not, i'm hoping the WBC will do it!

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
statement from mayol:
Mayol, 28, stopped Sosa in the second round to wrest the WBC 108-pound title in Chiapas, Mexico, last Saturday. That same night in Merida, another town in Mexico, Segura knocked out Filipino challenger Sonny Boy Jaro with a single body shot in the first round to retain the WBA crown.
“I’ve sparred with Segura before and I know I can beat him,” Mayol told The STAR. “Winning the world championship is something I’ve dreamed of for years. Now that I’ve finally done it, I plan to stay a world champion for a long time. I want to unify the lightflyweight championship. I’d like to fight Segura.
Mayol said he doubts if Sosa was in condition to fight when they faced off. At the weigh-in the day before the match, Mayol suspected the Mexican’s camp was up to no good.
“First, we were told the weigh-in would be at 1 p.m., then it was moved to 2 p.m. and later to 3 p.m.,” said Mayol. “We heard Sosa was buying time to make the limit. There was some confusion at the weigh-in and we never got to see the scales when Sosa weighed in. Too many people were around him. Sosa went up the scales then got off right away and somebody announced he made the weight.”
“After the headbutt, Sosa seemed okay,” recalled Mayol. “Then, I hit him with a right and a left. I knew he was hurt. I didn’t let him go. I was determined to win. I think he’s just using the headbutt as an excuse for losing. He has the option for a rematch and I’ll fight him again anytime, anywhere.”

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
WBC: Edgar Sosa emeritus champion | Fightnews - Boxing News Updated 24/7
The president of the WBC José Sulaimán, announced today that Édgar Sosa has been named a WBC emeritus champion, while the Filipino Rodel Mayol is recognized as WBC light flyweight world champion. The “emeritus” designation gives Sosa the right to immediately go to the front of the line to fight for a WBC title in any weight division. (More to come)

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
Sorry Edgar Sosa, The WBC Rules For Rodel Mayol
wbc upheld the decisions of the referee and fight doctor and installed sosa champ emeritus at the same time.
-
Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
About the rules: 1) Should Sosa have been allowed up to 5 minutes, as he would have been if it had been a low blow? 2) What happens when a ref screws up? It seems like it's the same as other pro sports that don't use instant replay, and that the ref is considered part of the "playing field", and that fighters have to deal with the calls as they come; right or wrong.
When I saw the but in real time I wasn't sure you could say it was intentional, but on the replay, it sure looked like he really seized the opportunity to drive his head in.

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
f*ck you mayol you cheating rat eating bastard! you say sosa is making an excuse for losing? if you wouldn't be such a f*cking cheat and try to cheat your way to a world title, maybe people would have a little bit more respect for you but as it is, your world championship is tainted and you know it. you tried that same crap with calderon but luckily they didn't let you get away from it. you say you want to fight giovanni segura? go ahead as i know he will knock the hell out of your cheating ass. remember you little bastard, karma is what you're going to get when you try to defend your tainted title.:plzdie::fyou:

I didnt see anywhere in his statement that he was making an excuse why Sosa lost. Why would he make an excuse for his opponent losing? Him suspecting foul play in the weighing scale is far from making excuses.
And what's with the rat eating comment? You must be a very close friend of Mayol to know he's eating rats

Re: Did anyone see the Mayol - Sosa fight?
i said mayol said sosa was just using the headbutt excuse because he lost. and no, i am not remotely close to that cheating bast-ardo who seems the only way he would ever win a title is by using his head as a weapon. tainted champion indeed!

hahahahahaahahaha
Give him a break mate. Before the Kyowa fight i think all pinoy fans are high on him. He's a full pledged gate keeper before this fight. It's his 5th chance WTF how lucky can you get while other guys strugle to get a second chance. and he finally got it :D .
Butt was unintentional and Mayol is more than willing for a rematch.
Incidentally.
Solis Kayoed Mayol who kayoed Sosa who beat Villoria who kayoed Solis :D
We have another evidence for the "Styles make fights" phrase :)
