I am wondering if anybody knows
I would think that you would have to define "famous" and that boxing would have to be divided into temporal periods given the differences in communication etc. throughout the history of the sport.
However, Louis - Schmelling II and Ali - Foreman are the first two that came to my mind when I read the topic.
Nothing will EVER top Louis vs. Max.... Ever
East vs. West, USA vs. Nazi Germany, Good vs. Evil.
My pick would be the famous , Calzaghe vs Manfredo , an unbeaten champion pitted against the very best challenger out there , toe to toe action , evenly matched it had the lot.Quote:

I suppose once again it's down to personal opinion, the few that spring to mind are the 'Rumble in the Jungle', 'Thrilla In Manilla' of course the louis Max from years back, but the one i will always remember for the one that had it all was Hagler V Hearns. Ok it didnt last as long as some previously mentioned but for pure excitement and thrills that would get my vote ;)

While most of you can make good arguements for most famous or moreso better fights and likely be correct in the better dept, the overall population on the planet knows "Ali was the greatest" and fought them other guys. What were their names again?
The Rumble in the Jungle, no question. That fight transcended the sport.
I'm guessing most famous, meaning most well known all around to the general public and boxing fans?
Ali-Frazier 1,3 or Tyson-Holyfield 2.

I think I'm going to have to disagree with you on this, Mick. For a few reasons. This fight was gigantic given what it represented and will forever be thought of as one of the most polarizing events in sports history... Louis will go down as one of the best HWs of all time and Louis's destruction of Schmelling in their second fight was epic, Ali's name, mouth, actions and dominance transended Sport. Ali was a force of nature and Everybody in the world from people in Kenya to the Phillipines to the bum who asks for change at the corner store to your local pizza guy to your grandmother's best friend Agnes knew who Muhammad Ali was and had heard him speak. When Ali took on Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle it was the biggest sporting event the world had ever seen... Even eclipsing Joe and Max. The public was force fed Ali by...... Ali. ;D Although that fight had lasting cultural shockwaves Ali Foreman gets this one, me thinks.Quote:

Regardless of how old the people are, the image of Ali over Foreman has been seared into the world public's frontal lobes... I understand what Joe and Max meant and how huge an event it was... But it was absolutly not bigger then Ali/Foreman. Looked at objectively this is a fact.
Well, based on the poll I've just done of my 14 year old cousin & 3 of her friends, we have
Rumble In The Jungle (impressively all knew Ali & 3 of the 4 named Foreman)
Thrilla In Manilla (there was a short debate if this was a Jackie Chan movie from one before they settled on it being an Ali fight, although only my cousin & 1 friend named Frazier)
Floyd Mayweather against that ugly English bredda (I presume this to be Mr Richard Hatton)
David Haye against that ugly massive thing (I'm assuming Valuev not Maccarinelli)
Floyd Mayweather against Manny 'Baggy-Ho' (They're either unaware this fight hasn't happened yet or PBF has fought some kind of low budget pornstar that I'm unaware of)
Sugar Ray Leonard against Mike Tyson (This seemed a desperate attempt to humour me for another 10 seconds with the only 2 other boxers they'd ever heard of... they're now talking about which rapper they all fancy the most)

Ohh for the buzz, I agree and I have no arguments against it. 10 millions in purse, a Circus "Ã* la Don King", the dancers, etc, an incredible buzz, the biggest. However, historically talking, the most important fight was Schmelling vs Louis, as I said, it depends of the perspective but for the Buzz, we agree, Rumble in the Jungle can't be beaten.

For over a hundred years it was the Heavyweights that made the headlines, thus my reason for including only one non HW fight on my list.
It is there because i think Leonard V Duran captured the imagination of world sports fans whether they liked boxing or not. Mayweather V Pacquiao might just do the same thing.
The others were all front page news items in their day, Jeffries was lured out of retiremnet to fight Johnson, $100,000 film rights were paid..it was a huge occaision. Louis V Schmelling 2 had the whole Nazi thing hanging over it. Sullivan was thought to be unbeatable, Dempsey had the long count and of course ALI was the king of mega fights and all of those i mention are mega fights.
The Rumble in the Jungle is still a part of our popular culture and within personal recall of that generation. Fifty years from now Louis vs Schmeling will still be what it is.

Asking what does boxing mean to history as a whole as much as the history of the sport?Has to be any that transcended the sport be it for a specific era,a famous photo,a unique incident a boxer that does the same automatically becomes an over all historical fixture,cough,Ali.Ali/Liston & that pic....Tyson/Holyfield & the bite sadly, (I'd bet that the arm chair 'casual' fans might forget they fought twice?)...Leonard/Durans series & 'No mas'...becomes its own catch phrase.
The photo from Ali-Liston 2 has to be the most famous boxing picture ever. Followed by probably Rocky (Balboa), and then the real Rock.Quote:
