was thinking about this today... why are they neccesary, was watching a couple of UFC fights today (i dont make a habit of this i promise !!! ;D)
but one thing i noticed is i dont think i have ever seen a fighter slip on an adverstising in the octagon which is something that does seem to happen farily reguarly in boxing, maybe barefeet can grip the canvas a little better than the soles of a shoe or boxing boot?

MMA generally fighters don't spend as long on their feet.
I've forgotten my boxing boots a few times at the gym and went barefoot...
Feet were in ribbons the next day.
Because in MMA if you wear shoes you don't have the right to use your feet to kick or anything else plus MMA fights do not last as long as boxing in general as it's normally 3 rounds of 5 minutes opposite to 12 of 3 minutes, doesn't use scratch the feet in the end the same way. I think as well that the tradition is playing a role too in the whole thing, a bit like the entrance robe which is very frequent in boxing and quasi absent in MMA.
Both these things. I used to train at a gym that was primarily MMA and I couldn't wear my boxing shoes in the ring. Perhaps just because I was used t shoes, it was always a little weird to me. Ankle support is the reason for the high tops.Quote:

It gives you extra grip, if you watch as a night progresses how slippery the canvas gets, it would be a huge disadvantage to go bare footed. Shoes also give you more ankle support, because of the grip you can change directions faster and something UFC fighters don't do as much is that you can drive off your planted foot a lot more with shoes on. This leads to more power in your punches. These are just a few of the reasons people wear shoes in boxing.
MMA fighters don't wear shoes because they don't make as much money as boxers ;D

grip. look how you pivot in boxing compared to mma, they're not generating as much torque when they punch, that transfers from the ground up.
the point we should be making is to get rid of the advertisements off the canvas then it wouldn't be slippy.

The styles are very different. Where we place and transfer weight. If you've ever boxed all you need to do is look at your back foot wear in the big toe area. I've seen brand new shoes on some people get worn right thru from sparring in as little as a month.

just my thoughts, but i fought taekwondo for a bit, and we did not wear shoes for training or for fights. Training was on mats or floorboards, and lasted for 2 hours. Torque and power created by a turning kick, i am convinced is higher than from a punch, and you twist your boy 180 degrees as you throw it.
never had any feet problems, and never slipped over. But the soles of my feet were tough as f*** after training 2 years!
Theres thoughts that the modern shoe helps you to get more purchase and hit harder than the old leather soled ones when you had to step into a metal tray of powder to stop you from slipping.
