Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight
For example, Harry Arroyo became one of the most recognizable boxers on television and regularly appeared on the covers of boxing magazines in the 80‘s. In 1984, Arroyo, with fellow Youngstown native Ray Mancini, was listed among the nation's top 10 contenders by the World Boxing Association. When he beat Terrance Alli in 1985 in a savage and punishing affair, he was 25-0. He thereafter went 14-11 to finish with a 40-11 mark. Against Alli, he won the war but lost the battle.
Can you name any?

Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Livingstone Bramble beat Ray Mancini then never really seemed to recapture that form again.

Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Arron Pryor comes to mind, he won the world tittle and then shacked himself up in a dope hole in Liberty City and smoked crack for the next couple years and he never amounted to nothing after wards. And if Richard Steel doesn't stop the Chavez - Taylor fight Taylor would have won a split decision but that would not have changed the fact that the beating he took that night put a real damper on what could have been a legendary career.

Well he did do it twice ;D.Think he looked tops against capable Tyrone crawley next but Rosario damn near decapitated him.He did really over stay his welcome but still pulled a few surprises out later.
Always thought brother Gabe the much better of the two Ruelas bros but Rafael peaked in a rough title battle with Pendleton and it was essentially all down hill after....what about a Mike rossman.Bit of a poster boy after beating up Galindez for strap but revenge was harsh.Technically 1st Nelson fight a win for Fenech.Afterward, when It meant something, not so much.

Rossman is a great example, indeed. :appl:

Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Margacheato. He was on the of the boxing scene when he beat Cotto but then... we all know.
Morales after the first Pac fight
theres two
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Camacho Sr after the Edwin Rosario fight.
It's tough to know when it's just one tough fight, or a career adding up.
Morales after the first Pac fight - well, Barrera gave him tougher fights than Pac did the first time round...
Similarly, Hagler after Mugabe was one that sprung to mind. But he'd had a shitload of fights in a long career.
Ali after the third Frazier fight.
Good thread.

Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
More recently Israel Vasquez, altho he had 3 murderous fights in a row not just one.
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Roy Jones after the 1st Antonio Tarver fight, we all know what happened after that. Diego Corrales is another one, he lost 3 straight fights after stopping JLC, and then sadly his life.

Yep, Corrales is one that everybody has missed, and he should be fresh in our minds. Neither he or Castillo was the same after that. I don't see how you could expect either of them to be - what a fight.

Yeah, I totally agree. Neither Corrales or Castillo were the same after their first fight. They both were pretty much shot after that.

Roy didnt take too much punishment in the first Tarver fight. It was a battle for him to lose the weight to make the fight. It caught up to him in the rematch

Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Bowe was never the same fighter after the first Holyfield fight and he certainly wasn't the same after their second.

Eubank was never the same finisher after Michael Watson II.
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Jones was never the same after the Ruiz fight.
The move up to heavyweight proved costly once he decided to move back down.
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Well the 1st one that came to mind for me was Buster Douglas - had to be one of the most sensational World Title wins in history due to the gulf in class between the two fighters and the huge difference in the betting odds before hand.
He didnt really do much after the win did he

Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Not so much lost it but wasn't quite the same guy....Cotto after the the Clottey fight though I will say that I think he was still damaged from the Margarito fight and after that he decided to take on the tornado that is Manny Pacquiao... So there's no shame in any of that. Nomatter what happens in Cottos short remainder of his career or if he decides to continue he had a great career and I thank him for it!

Benn v MClennand took everything out of them.

Nobody knows that mate. People always talk about a long count in Round 1, but there wasn't one, a fighter can be afforded extra time if they go outside of the ring. The time difference between G Man's last punch landing and Benn being back on his feet was 10 seconds. Admitedly the ref did keep breaking them after that which was unexplainable

It was a hypothetical... granted, anything can happen. I was just putting it out there. I should have used the word "could" rather then "would" when talking about how the landscape "would have" changed. The officiating in that fight regardless of whether or not people saw a long count.

I agree on the long count. People say Texas is a bad place to fight and it is if you're the opponent. But fighting in GB is pretty bad also. See Dirrell, Tszyu, McClellan, etc.

Still not as bad as Germany ;D

Agreed...not sure about elsewhere but in many parts of the States its 20 seconds.Ref had some flubs and behind the head shots went both ways at times.

Yes. That is when G has the advantage and going for the KO. Still unbelievable performance by benn.

Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Corrales was the fight name that came to mind.
Hatton was never the same after Tszyu, but he still had a remarkable career after that fight.
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
okay well here's one to think about, Jesus Chavez was never the same again after killing Leavander Johnson, I think it obviously affected him a lot because he was never the same fighter again.

Is think its 20 secs if the fighter went out of the ring ala Rahman. but is it also 20 secs if you went just outside the rope but still in the ring?
EDIT :
A boxer shall receive a twenty (20) second count if the boxer is knocked out of the ring and onto the floor. The boxer is to be unassisted by spectators or his/her seconds. If assisted by anyone, the boxer may lose points or be disqualified with such a decision being within the sole discretion of the referee.

I remember a member of the media assisting Nigel Benn but not much i suppose.

Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Gabriel Ruelas after fighting Jimmy Garcia. Garcia's death haunted him for the rest of his career. He was never the same mentally after that fight.
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
First names that come to mind are Oliver McCall (after beating Lennox) and Hasim Rahman (after beating Lennox).
Probably a case of neither guy being that great to begin with, but after they found that sweet spot on Lewis' jaw, never truly capitalized on the momentum. McCall beat 87-year-old Larry Holmes in his one successful title defense, then lost to Frank Bruno. Rahman got waxed y Lewis in the rematch, then had the "other head on my head" fight with Evander, and kind of faded from view until he fought James Toney.
Courtney Burton after beating Angel Manfredy. He went 2-5 after that fight, getting knocked out five times. (Manfredy, for that matter, only fought twice after Burton.)
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Joe Mesi after "beating" Jirov.
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Frazier lost some of his mojo after the first fight with Ali. He did fight on well after, including the brutal third fight however.
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Zab Judah after knocking out Spinks in the rematch.
He never has looked that good again, at least not against good competition.
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?
Hatton was never the same after he beat Tszyu, that was his moment and it took it all from him in doing it. Look at his face after that fight, it's a mess.
Ali should never have fought again after the Thriller in Manilla.
-
Re: Can you name fighters who seemed to have lost it after winning a tough fight?

Neither of them should have.

Yes. It appears that most fighter who have won a fight that ended tragically were never the same. Few exceptions to that.
