Full credit to Manny for forcing the fight and taking risks, but it takes two to tango, and Clottey had cleary forgotten his dancing shoes. To be honest I was disgusted in Clottey. The biggest opportunity of his life, his 'Miracle' fight and he hides in his shell like a narcoleptic Tortoise for 36 minutes. Pathetic.
Bearing in mind Clottey's background, and the notoriously brutal upbringing in Accra, this guy had no fight in him. He outweighed Manny by nearly two weight divisions on the night, and still didnt show the bottle to try and at least make it a fight. There was so many times Manny let his hands go in bunches and looked downstairs to finish off the combinations. Where was the big right hand counter ? I'll tell you where, covering his face like a bad case of acne.
I have no doubt that if Clottey had at least attempted to throw some leather he could have had some success. To sit there, content in surviving against a much smaller foe is shameless in my book. Jim Watt and even Darkie were talking shite throughout that fight, and I love Darkie, but come on ? Courageous and brave Clottey ? WTF !!! ???
Cotto was brave and courageous, Clottey was a fucking coward. At first I thought or more so hoped that Clottey was just weathering the early storm and would come on strong in the second half of the fight, using his size and strength, but no, fuck all.
Disgraceful from Clottey who shouldnt be given another shot like this as long as he lives. That may sound harsh, but it was called the 'Event', the only thing vented was my anger at such a bitch poor showing from Joshua.
Roll on Floyd and Shane, that fight didnt do boxing any favours.
I think the problem was that Clottey was getting hit harder than he expected. I don't think he could react, surprisingly, to Manny's power the same way he has to Margarito's or Cotto's. I agree though, throwing more punches couldn't have hurt Clottey more than just standing there. THe only advantage it might have provided is that Manny didn't really let loose expect when Clottey tried to come on strong in the 11th. That being said I saw Clottey land better punches in quite a few rounds, but he only threw 4-5 meaningful punches. He had great defense, but he was too stationary, and the fight basically went the way I thought it would as good as Joshua is. I did expect him to win a few more rounds early.
I agree with alot of what you say but I dont know if Id call Josh a coward. You have to remember his main cornerman was a locksmith who happend to be a cutman many years ago so basically Clottey had no gameplan. He was very much out there on his own and because he isnt the sharpest tool in the box, he did the only thing he knew which was to put his hands up. Thats all he has been taught. Fair point, I respect any fighter that steps through the ropes to be honest, it takes a huge set of balls from the outset, regardless of level. The coward quote was more against the commentators rubbish about being courageous, for me that wasnt a gutsy, brave, courageous performance. It was survival 101.Quote:

And even without his cornerman, Josh certainly knew he was behind in every round, so why not throw caution to the wind in the biggest fight of your life ? He has the skills, the power, accuracy and size to trouble the smaller Manny, he just didnt go for it. Which I think he will really regret for the rest of his life. Leave it all in the ring, then you can have no what if's afterwards, and you only get one chance like that in your lifetime.
The times the Josh did throw his shots, they were clean, snappy and knocked back Manny's head, he just didnt do anywhere near enough, and that's whats annoying.
in short, a great performance by Pacquiao, and the worst performance from Clottey, he did more dancing on his way to the ring than he did in the ring, the fight was a bore-fest and as predicted the undercard sucked balls, IMO Soto doesn't belong at 135, and put on a pretty weak performance, he gets sparked by any of the top fighters at lightweight and should consider it a blessing that the Valero fight never materialized, so much hype about it being in the Dallas Cowboy Stadium and yet the crowd didn't really seem all that pumped up, i think (as far as energy) the Cotto/Foreman fight is gonna put last nights fight to shame, especially now that it's at Yankee Stadium, again good performance by Pacquiao but as was said earlier it takes two to make a fight, and Clottey only showed up to cash a check
People on here are saying Clottey didn't throw enough punches.
How can Clottey throw when he has to protect himself from Pacquiao's constant speedy attacks ? Is he supposed to just leave himself open to get some shots in ?
When Pacquiao wasn't on his case, he did throw and land.
Throughout the fight though, Clottey was simply not able to fight at the pace Pacquiao was, and Pacquiao's footwork and speed made it harder for Clottey to close the gap.
Manny's speed was obviously a major factor, he was throwing so many punches I bet Clottey thought he was surrounded at times. It doesnt mean that Clottey couldnt use his strength to try and close the distance, push Manny back behind his 'Winky' style guard and look to get off first.Quote:

Clottey just doesn't have that extra something. He had his many chances in several fights to show it. Congrats Pac. I'll chalk this one up as a "stay busy" fight for Pac. Even though it was more like working on the heavybag.
I thought Clottey fought his usual fight. His problem was, Pac is just an incredible elite fighter.
There were plenty of occasions Clottey got in position to throw the uppercut he was looking for, yet ended up getting machine gunned out of there. If he'd taken more of a chance he'd have been stopped, which I think dawned on him early in the fight.
Another great showing by Pac.

I thought Pacquaio really got hit more than he could have or should have. The main thing he was getting hit with was that left uppercut, at least late, and it only happened when he just sat on the inside, with his foot speed and movement there was no reason to just be a sitting duck in there at times. But they didn't seem to bother him and maybe that had something to do with it, starting to think one of the more underrated things about him is his chin. The body shot KO was like a decade ago and other than that he just doesn't get hurt much. Strangely enough it was guys like Nedal Hussein, Oscar Larios that have seemingly bothered him as much as anybody.

I agree, very disappointed with Clottey in this fight. From the moment the fight began he was in survival mode, he got the paypacket and just wanted to go the distance. Clottey shouldn't get another big fight after that lacklustre performance, it was a weak effort.Quote:

Clottey covered up and took very little chances. He didn't want to risk getting knocked out or risk winning. Theres no two ways about it. Pacquaio made it a fairly exciting fight but Clottey didn't even try to win.
Azumah Nelson would have FOUGHT Pacquaio. Thats for damn sure.
And despite HBO's bashing of Ike Quartey. I believe Ike would have put up a much better fight against Pac man as well.
On that effort i see Clottey taking the same path as another tough fighter in Ben Tackie. Being tough and taking a punch won't win you to many fights unless you fight back!
fight also shows pacquiao really got a chin. he ate some good uppercuts from clottey.

the larios fight went on that long cause pac said he wanted the filipino fans to enjoy the fight when he got tagged by larios he tried to finish him quick.
why was he hurt by guys on the lower weights? well its simple he was too big on the weights and he forced himself to dry out just to make weight. that affects your chin in a way. now he is fighting in almost his walking weight he got no prob with his chin.
