Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
Boxing: Guzman-Funeka is on
He is reported to be weighing in 9 pounds over the limit at 144 pounds. Funeka made the weight at 135.
The fight is still on though but the title is not on the line for Guzman but if Funeka wins, he takes the title home.
What a joke. Guzman does it again.

At this point I gotta think Guzman is just there for a check

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
9 pounds is just ridiculous.
-
Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
Maybe he thought he was fighting at Diamond weight?
-
Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
That is just disgusting and grossly disrespectful. I hope Funeka keeps it together does just what he did last time out. Lee Beard obviously worked wonders with Guzman!

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
In my oppinion this is the sign of a person who is just so unperfessional that they should be banned at fighting at this level. Funeka is a consummate pro. He has allowed weight issues of his opponants to screw him before and I applaud him for not scrubbing the fight. I think Guzman should be fined into bankrupcy and I am holding on to the wish that Funeka sparks this disrespectful prick. Take note. Here is the pick when they announced the weight... This look like a guy that feels bad or is ashamed of his inability to adhere to the rules of his trade?

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
Hold on...
How did he get past the weight testing?
Is it only the WBC who makes sure that people are on weight? What about the fact that this is his second time doing this in a championship fight?
Please... and who promotes this clown??? I dare not say...
They need to ban him from boxing, after levying a hefty fine--part of which should go to Funeka.
Funeka should win the title on merit... they are turning him into another Nate Campbell. Who will step up to fight him next?

How does the weight testing work? Is it a certain percentage a week before? A month?

I believe they have target weights they need to be at 30 days out and also closer to the fight. Don't quote me. If someone else could verify, that'd be great.

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
Guzman can't weigh more than 150 lbs. when they weigh in tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. If Funeka defeats Guzman, he can still win the IBF belt.

30 days and 7 days... Section 4.6 of the WBC rules. They must be no more than 10% over and 5% over, respectively.

So he should have been 141 and 3/4, a week ago.

Which if he got by that then he's just an asshole!

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
I hope Guzman gets sparked by Funeka also. That motherfukker thinks he's fighting at HW where he can just come in at any weight? Fukk him.

Yeah, look at that picture. That is deplorable and Beard seems to having a good old smirk too. These people need to be fined and Guzman needs to be run out of boxing after this is done. The man will almost be a WW. Unbelievable.:rolleyes:

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
I can understand missing the weight by a pound or two but nine  That shit was intentional...I hope Funeka beats his ass again.

Exactly. It's not even missing a division, it's almost two weight classes up! He has gone and done a Mayweather, but taken it even further! The man doesn't deserve a payday for this. Training and making weight is part of the job and if you can't do it then you shouldn't be paid!
-
Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
I have nothing to say for this but I don't think people have to hope Funeka beats his ass, it's pretty much going to happen as obviously Guzman does not give a fuck here.
-
Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
That piece of shit is the biggest waste of talent in the sport today. I hope Funeka ends his career (well, that's hyperbole and I think his career is pretty much over anyways, but this shit pisses me off). What a fucking hack.
I'm surprised Funeka agreed to go on with the fight.
-
Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
I don't think he CAN make the weight anymore guys.
Just like Castillo and Gatti got to where they couldn't make their weight divisions anymore as they got older.
Still Guzman knew damn well he couldn't make it and still went thru with the fight and came in 9 lbs over.
After this fight his career is most likely over.
What a waste of talent too, anyone who saw his dominant win over Humberto Soto a few years back knows that Guzman had all the talent in the world.
-
Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
So do you think Guzman will have an advantage and be stronger than Funeka now, or will he just be slower . Will the 9 pounds work for him or against him?

I think it's been done on purpose so it will be to Guzmans advantage. Funeka has lost all the weight and will gain overnight. Guzman knows Funeka has all the physical advantages and has tried to 'get even' by not even bothering to boil down and to just come in at a weight he feels comfortable carrying. I don't think it's obvious that Funeka has this like like some are saying. I want him to him, but Guzman isn't daft. This has been premeditated. It means Funeka has to be bit more careful IMO. I still think he can win though.

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
Guzman's goin for a kayo I think. I'm rootin for Funeka, I hope Funeka destroys him!!!

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
Holy shite, that's completely ridiculous, wow. I don't know whether it's more likely that he just doesn't give a damn and is here for the cashout, or he has in fact trained hard with every intention of weighing in so much heavier and using it to his advantage. Either way it's appaling and cringeworthy, ideally Funeka would get paid without having to step into the ring, but obviously that wasn't going to happen. You've got to feel for the guy here, he doesn't have the name and needs this fight to further establish himself, but Guzman is royally screwing him over even if he's only looking to get paid. Funeka has one of the biggest frames I've ever seen on a lightweight, it looks like he hasn't eaten in weeks... And what if Joan is indeed the fresher fighter and pulls it out this time? He doesn't deserve to fight anyone worth a dime ever again, a 3rd fight would be a further embaressment. What the hell went on in Guzmans camp is the other thing I'm wondering? Lee Beard has basically disgraced himself entirely as well, who the hell is going to work with either of these guys again?

Good points. It's a horribly screwed up situation and the one getting royally screwed however you look at it is Funeka. If he's wants to get paid after training for a good 2 months, then he has got to fight. It really isn't fair though and the commisions need to do something about Guzman as it isn't the first time he has had issues with weight.
As for Beard, I thought exactly the same thing. People have been saying positive things about Beard, but I had a hard time buying into any of it. And here he is with a fighter having come in two weight classes heavy. It's disgusting really.

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
Truly disgusting, it would be hard to come up with a less honorable and more cowardly act.

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
This is an absolute joke and Guzman doesn't deserve the honour of stepping into a ring for a world title fight. I'm gonna be absolutely rooting for Funeka to wipe that damn smile off his face. Someone should also wipe that f**ckin smirk off of Lee Beards face too. He looks like he knew also. Idiot.

Re: Guzman seriously overweight for Funeka bout.
In addition, it appears that Guzman is being fined between $20,000-to-$25,000 from his purse, with the money going to Funeka.

Feom the above article, There is something I don't quite understand or maybe reading it wrong. To me it seems that Funeka has to weigh in 145 or below and Guzman has to weight 150 or below. I'm confused as something about that doesn't seem to add up. Why should there be a weight restriction like that on Funeka??

Right, that just sounds weird. What is the reasoning behind that? Funeka made the weight, so now he should be able to rehydrate to whatever weight he wants. I so hope Funeka is able to do a number on this cheating little bugger.

I know, I just don't understand how that weight rule can be implemented. Somethin ain't right about that for sure. Maybe it's written wrong.

I can only assume it was something they negotiated yesterday. Why Funeka would agre to that when he clearly had the upper hand in discussions is beyond me.

That's embarrassing. I was a fan, and even was willing to give him a pass for the Nate thing but this is just absurd, go Funeka. Guzman makes Jones Toney look like an overachiever.

Clearly Funeka needs to weigh under 145 to fight for the IBF belt, they are allowing Guzman to go over because he can no longer fight for it.
If Funeka weighed over 145 the fight could still happen (I guess) but Funeka would forfeit the right to fight for a world title as well.
It's not that unfair to Funeka, it's just he's obviously still trying to fight in accordance with the rules for the right to win the belt, whereas Guzman obviously doesn't give a fuck.
It will be interesting to see if Funeka does weigh under the limit or if he comes in heavy and gives up the title opportunity to enhance his winning chances against a much heavier and cheating opponent.

That's what I would figure. I've never heard of a sanctioning body having a restriction on what a fighter can rehydrate to for the unofficial weight in order to still fight for the belt..
