Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
While I think it will be hard for Foreman to get a decision, I can smell an upset.
I've seen a fair amount of Foreman, I give him a good chance. He has a big height and reach advantage, and he knows how to use it. Foreman is the naturally bigger man. His whole career has been at 154, and he is 5'11", with 72" reach. Cotto is 5'7" with a 67" reach and started at 140. He is technically excellent, good counterpuncher, and very good defensively, especially his footwork. He fights tall, and he has the ability to look totally in control of the ring while moving backwards. He's a young 30, and he won't get drawn into a war and fight Cotto's fight. While he don't go for the KO's, he
Cotto is coming off a loss by destruction. He's an old 30. IMHO, peaked with the Mosley fight, and he took a tremendous beating in he process. Then (illegal wraps to blame or not), he took a beating against Tony. Manny beat up him, and he clearly lost confidence and went into survival mode. He's up against a smart fighter with a great jab and a reach advantage. Cotto wasn't great against Josh Clottey, and Clottey is not exactly a big puncher, barely lets his hands go, and doesn't have the movement of Foreman.
Don't get me wrong, Cotto at his peak is a much better fighter. On paper, this looks like a mismatch. Cotto won't come in the fight out of shape and rusty like Santos did, but Foreman has both the right style to give Cotto problems the tools, physical, mental, and skills, to make it happen. I can see this fight being properly scored 116-112 for Foreman, with Cotto walking away with SD or close UD.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
I've seen a few Yuri Foreman fights, and he is quite an impressive little fighter. He's technical very good, he has good handspeed, good footwork, and he is very patient.
He does lack some pop but i feel thats because, he's constantly on his toes. And he's not sitting down on his punches, against Daniel Santos he did show some underrated power, certainly no P4P typepower. But for certain underrated.
Yuri Foreman does lack good workrate though, and i have a feeling Miguel Cotto will just walk him down. And finish him late on with his tademark body shots.
But this is at 154, and Yuri Foreman does have height/reach advantages. So it wouldn't shock me at all if Yuri Foreman pulls this off.
And as you said Miguel Cotto has seen better days for sure, he's an old 30 with the wars against Pacquiao, Torres, Margarito.

IMO it wasn't so much Foreman's power against Santos as much as it was the weight loss, don't forget Santos (the lazy fuck) basically gained 17 lbs over night

He doesn't have the best work rate, but he's not Clottey, either. Sometimes he gets up on the cards and coasts. When he does that, it's very frustrating. I thought he could have finished Santos, but got on his bike towards then the end. It was probably a smart move, but I like to see fighters go for the coup d'grace.
I think you are right that Cotto should try to walk him down. It would force Foreman to sit down on his punches to make him pay for it, but ever since the Mosley fight, he fancies himself a boxer. He mixed up boxing and brawling with Mosley, but against Tony he boxed, he boxed Clottey, and tried to box Pacman. It made sense against Tony and Clottey, but I thought he should used more of his "trademark" body shots on Manny.
I don't favor Foreman, but I can see a few scenarios where he pulls it off. I think there is a good chance Cotto starts out trying to box him, loses some early rounds, then starts walking him down and eventually breaks him down, just like you said. I can also see Cotto underestimating him, and Foreman putting him on his butt in the first half of the fight. If that happens, he will probably getting tentative and get his ears boxed off.

The second knockdown was conditioning, but the first one was legit. I thought he could have finished him them if he had the mentality to do it. He has more power than his KO numbers indicate.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
From the outset something in the back of my head did not like this for Cotto.Givens are Foremans size, weight,he is seemingly hitting his stride in confidence and exposure, these guys are going in opposite directions and my god man....he is a boxing fool! Not always fun,TV friendly ,right. As pure a boxer out there with little regard in changing style, making fans sleepy and just stick and move all night.
Their were mentions of Cotto going up to 154 after the Margarito fight and I just dont think he belongs there in size.He fights squate and square more and more, especially when going to ropes. Not to mention hes off of some serious wars and taxing fights in with Margarito,Clottey and Pacquiao...the Jennings and Gomez fights were borderline sparring sessions.I seriously think his people are putting WAY to much emphasis on Foreman dismal ko percentage here and its just a terrible style for him I believe.Foreman will not sit down and engage unless he absolutely has to and unlike his most recent meaningful fights Cotto will have to walk forward and hunt.Foreman has deceptive angles...he backs up but can also shift off and turn guys.I think his best chance is to keep shorter pursuing Cotto at range and just tenderize his thin skin and will no doubt open cuts...not to mention Foreman is very prone to causing head butts in there and natural strength on inside will allow him to tie up,maneuver Cotto. One step ahead as it goes rounds and having Cotto reaching in a lurch looking to get off.Foreman has hand speed and while not a puncher,is a sharp hitter....think 10 fast golfballs hitting your face as opposed to one bowling ball.
The Santos fight was impressive and maybe over highlighted Foremans hands and movement just a little bit because Santos came in looking as if he was in his third trimester and moved like a sloth but the tools were apparent. While a tub of goo Santos still possessed power and he unleashed everything very early,Foreman just kept his head and took what came.He does not get rattled...by booing fans or rough tactics mostly.Hey,I could be totally wrong...I love Cotto and want him to have a huge night.Just have a bad feeling.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
I think it's a close fight, don't know who I'm going to pick yet. Anybody care to speculate on who they think the house fighter is in this one? Arum promotes both guys, Cotto sells a lot of tickets but a Jewish world champion in New York can probably sell a few too.

Betting the ring will be the size of a walk in closet ;).Style wise I dont see many clamoring to fight Foreman....and even less 'main street' ticket buyers appreciating a pure boxer and watching with anticipation.Either way..Arum wins though.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
I remembering being pretty impressed watching FOrman live, but when COtto and PAcquiao came on two fights later it was a completely different speed, and I think if Cotto is anywhere near the level he was against Pacquiao that he will win this fight. Sure he isn't as good as he used to be, but he is still too much for the weakest champion at 154... unless the PAcquiao fight took that much more out of him, but that is yet to be determined, and maybe the move up will replenish him a little bit.

Yes, I do. It smells like lox and bagels, but it smell pretty damn good. Yuri is one very focused fighter.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
No chance.
Cotto is gonna tear his body apart.
A list fighters don't lose to B- level fighters very often.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
Form is temporary, class is permanent. Interesting to see how Cotto deals with the massive height disadvantage though but yeh, that body is going to pay.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
Foremans a good mobile fighter who uses the ring very well. If Steward gets Cotto back to boxing and addresses a few things, Cotto stands a decent shot at beating Foreman.
If Manny can bring Cottos hands down just a tad so their not blocking his peripheral vision, it will be a plus for Cotto as he'll have more opportunities to counter and Foreman won't spend the whole fight hooking and pivoting.
Some added head movement and stepping up Cottos rope routines so he can close the distance faster and stay with Foreman once hes on the run, improves Cottos chances dramatically. Just my opinion...(Never was a Cotto fan, myself)

You can't beat a bit of Jewish deli. It's a shame those places are closing down at the rate they are. That's the problem when the stuff you sell gives your customers heart attacks. :)

There are tens of thousands of Jewish Yankees fans and the Yankees are giving this the big sell, I haven't bought a ticket in nearly ten years and I've had half a dozen emails already. I'm just wondering if Arum knows there's a vast untapped NY market for a Jewish world champion. Like you say though Arum wins either way.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
My wife and I will the only two Jews in a room full of Puerto Rican representation for this fight. Hopefully I'll get some support from mi amiga Dominicana and her Nicaraguan baby-daddy.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
I am not sure what the upset would be? Cotto lost his last 3 fights in my eyes, and Foreman is coming off his biggest win. I think Santos was obviously bothered by the weight he agreed to, but Yuri still looked like a pretty solid fighter.
Soo if by upset, you mean Cotto wins, then no I do not smell an upset. I think this is a stylistic nightmare for Cotto, who is digging deep by moving up in weight after losing at a catch weight below welter.
Don't be deceived by the color of his skin!

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
Cotto wins this, Foreman does not punch hard enough to deter Cotto.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
Foreman, born in Belarus but now a confirmed Yankee fan, is preparing to become a rabbi. As he will be observing his Sabbath until sundown on Saturday, June 5, the first bell for the main event will not ring until 11.30 pm. That will also give New York's large Jewish population time to reach the stadium and help swell the crowd to an expected 35,000.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
Nope I can not smell an upset. I think this will be a bad beating for Foreman. Foreman does not have the speed of Pacquiao or Mosley and he doesn't use bricks in his gloves. Cotto will simply cut the ring and destroy the body. Cotto by TKO in six.

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
i think cotto will man handle him, cotto is a decent boxer himself, he did great against mosley.....foreman donesnt have what it takes to beat cotto

Re: Anybody else smell an upset with Cotto/Foreman?
I can see it happening, imo its quite an even match-up! Who knows what Cotto has left? Foreman has excellent fundamentals & boxes to his strengths. Cotto could be in for a long night...
