After watching the Caballero fight this weekend and a video of Lucien Bute that Daxx posted in a different thread, it got me to thinking about who the best body-punchers are amongst active fighters.
Off the top of my head, I would say Caballero, Bute, Cotto, and maybe Mosley are among the best, but I'm sure I'm missing some obvious ones.

I think lamont Peterson deserves a shout. Hatton was always a vicious body puncher
Obviously not the best right now, but if he carries on Antwone Smith definitely will be. He scored a KO with one of the best body punches I've ever seen on the Berto-Quintana undercard. The other guy didn't get up for 8 minutes.Quote:

JCC and McCallum use to be my favourite fighters with the body shots but Cotto would be my best and the shot he hit Jennings with was beautiful.

Both left their opponents looking sickened to fuck when they got those bodyshots in.
Micky Ward threw a beautiful body punch. He was better at it than Hatton for sure. Little tap on the side of the head, ear or shoulder and straight down under the rib cage. Awesome...
There is a few very good in that department but I would that till now, overall, Cotto has a bit of advance on the others as he did throw a couple more significant ones (in my opinion) though other like Caba and Bute are quite respectable beasts in that respect too.
I would say the guy I saw who got the best leverage to the body ever was Mike Tyson in his prime, but guys figured out how to stop him from ever getting the oppertunity relatively easily.
I think Cotto has the most powerful body shots today, and he seems to have the best accuracy with them as well. He has the intuition that allows him to land at will to the liver.
A guy not mentioned is Chad Dawson who IMO throws very well to the body, he just doesn't seem to have the power to hurt guys down there.

WHen I went to see him face PAcquiao, I was impressed by both of their speed. Cotto is much faster than most guys in boxing, and has exceptionally underrated handspeed which is much more apparent watching him live... Same can be said for Manny. It looks different on camera, at least with them.

I gotta be honest, when I saw this thread I suddenly realised that most of the good body punchers I knew off are now past their best. :-\

Cant really come up with some 'unknown's'.... I know Tim Bradley admitted he was troubled by Lamont Peterson's body shots and that he had to really dig deep to pull through. But to be honest, I haven't even seen that fight so i can't comment on Lamont's delivery, timing, power etc...
I know Floyd Mayweather has a pretty damn unstoppable jab to the body but that's slightly off topic.
That's one of the reasons I made this thread. When I started to think about who I could list (ie. Hatton, Ward, Cotto etc.) it seemed like most of them were either retired or at the tail end of their careers. Maybe that just shows my lack of overall knowledge in this area though.Quote:

thought the topic was todays body punchers. But now that I think about it Ward at 47 or so probably still throws a better body punch.
You know Callazo has pretty underrated power. He has a great hook, hook to the body that he definitely slowed Berto down with more than a few times in their fight last year.
As far as young guns I think Antillion thumps the body with dedication.Hopefully he can retool after feasting on an uppercut upset loss and get right back into the title hunt......for a long volume guy Paul Williams can loop and mix to the body very well.
Antillon is definately confident he's got it back he's facing Brandon Rios on May 8th. Rios is the real deal, loads of talent.Quote:
