And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
Sergio Martinez !!!
IT HAPPENED !
Martinez outboxed Pavlik and cut him to ribbons.
What an excellent performance.
If you would have told me a few years ago that there was a guy out there I had never heard of who would go on to beat Cintron, Williams and Pavlik I wouldn't have beleived it.
But Martinez is definately THE MAN.
Fuck yeah !

Here's the current official Saddoboxing Middleweight rankings.
We still need to vote on how far to drop Pavlik

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
Definitely, Martinez is a force, probably the best performance by a fighter so far this year.
A new superstar of boxing could be in the making, and he looks a little like me.

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
Only bad thing is he's 35 and he relies so much on his speed and athlethicism I'm guessing that his best years were spent in obscurity and he can't have to much time left...but then again he didn't start till 20...

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
great win for martinez. i'm a big fan of his but also of pavlik. i think pavlik screwed himself for coming in too heavy and it showed in his lackluster performance. he looked as slow as when he lost to bernard hopkins in the 170 catchweight fight. rehydrating 18 lbs. from 160 to 178 tells me that he was having problems making weight. hope they fight again because it was an entertaining fight.

Lets hope not.
I think Martinez has a few good title defences in him.
He's a super athlete.

Meanwhile... elsewhere, Roy Jones Jr. is hatching his plot to steal Martinez's body and once again begin his quest for domination of the boxing world...;D

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
Hats off to Martinez. He really turned it on down the stretch. It looked as if Pavlik was edging his way back into it, but Martinez just ramped it on up. Martinez is a little like Calzaghe in that he has only really made his name internationally whilst well into his 30's. Like I say I thought Pavlik had found the formula, but Martinez turned that on it's head. The cuts clearly didn't help Pavlik, but that's boxing.
We might well see a rematch because of the rematch clause. I've a feeling Pavlik might still be very dangerous. But Martinez has shown, a bit like Hopkins did, that Pavlik is limited against a fighter who uses the ring. I thought Pavlik would land more and cause more damage, but Pavlik struggled. The first 4 rounds showed a serious disparity between the two. I had always wanted to see Calzaghe/Pavlik because I thought Calzaghe would school him something rotten, this went half way to showing that. There is no doubt that Martinez has grown into middleweight very well. He might as well stay there to see out his career.

Normally that would be a problem. But Martinez keeps himself in outstanding shape. And apart from the Margarito and Williams fights he hasn't really to my knowledge token much punishment in the ring

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
Great performance from Martinez props to him I under estimated him at middlewieght.
-
Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
Props to him, especially as there wasn't many peoples believing he could do it, he showed grit and determination, Personally I was believing that he would be able to beat Pavlik with movement and speed, that's what happened, a bit upset as it might cut the Pavlik-Bute bout with HBO but who knows...

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
Shit that puts a spanner in the works for 2 of Australia's top MW's... Apparently Daniel Geale had a shot lined up against Pavlik and Mundine apparently has been chasing a shot at Pavlik for about a yr now 2!
Do u guys think I guess due to Martniez's relative obscurity from prime time boxing exposure in America, either of these 2 Aussies will get a shot at him? I mean they are both ranked quite highly respectively in the MW division?

Hard to say, Pavlik has a rematch clause with Martinez, Martinez has one with Paul Williams, HBO wants (or wanted?) Bute-Pavlik.... I think it might happen but not in a close future as there is a lot of clouds and potential rematches over there before the Aussies might have a shot at Martinez. Probably that in the end, it's all gonna go down to money.

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
I knew Martinez would beat Pavlik.
He was just stylistically all wrong for him. A fighter who moves well and has superior speed will always cause hell of Pavlik. Pavliks power is a non factor when he can't sit down on his shots.
I watched a stream but from what i seen, Pavlik had a seriously tough time landing on Martinez who appeared to be quite hittable against Williams. I think Williams long reach, faster pressure and speed caused Martinez trouble.
I will give the fight another watch later. I might of missed something because of the stream.

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
Pavlik was very gracious after the fight and freely admitted he had been taken apart by the better man. He showed real class and may have won over some fans in losing. The thing is, however, that I believe I heard him say something between rounds that implied he was thinking of quiting. I hope not because if quit is in his DNA, he is in for some bad times. I don't see a rematch here--I see him moving up to Supermiddleweight where he has a decent shot of beating a few out there like Abraham and The Dane based on styles making fights, but he had better stay away from the likes of Ward, Dirrell, and especially Bute. He now needs to make serious decisons about his future. One more loss, and he is in dire straits career-wise. First thing I would do is get rid of my cut man. Second thing I'd do is work on my stance and ability to counter punch. Bottomline: Kelly Pavlik is no longer the next big thing in boxing. He still could be, but after Lockett, Old man Hopkins, Rubio, the terribly mismatched Espino, and now this loss to a super fighter whose uinusual style was no big secret coming in, Pavlik is badly in need of life support. That is all.

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
I just rewatched the fight.
Pavlik did far better than i realised the first time. He actually had some success with his counter jab and he was able to land his right hand occasionally in the middle rounds. Unforenately for him, the cut occured and it was all seriously down hill from there.
Pavlik should exercise his rematch clause. I'm not saying he will win a rematch but he would likely do much in a second fight.

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
Shouldn't Williams be the new champion, he earned the right and would have beaten this Pavlik.

I disagree.
Williams lost to Martinez and got the gift decision.
Williams is much easier to hit than Martinez, and a bit chinny IMO.
It is unfair to Martinez to just assume that Williams could have done what he did last night.

I think your bang on there. Williams and Martinez fought neck and neck almost the whole way through, but I thought Martinez pulled it out by a round or two quite clearly in the end, although calling it a gift is a stretch. Either way, Martinez has now fought Williams and Pavlik back to back without ever being in real trouble. Williams got clocked badly in the 1st by Sergio and was damn lucky it was the end of that round, he was also getting tagged all the way through. There's no question Pavlik hits harder than either of the two, you'd have to give him a much better shot at stopping Williams, who incidently doesn't move nearly as well as Martinez and is easier to hit.

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
I think the announcers were giving Pavlik too much credit in the mid rounds saying he won like 5 in a row, I disagreed, he did win a few, but not THAT many. Overall, good fight. I really wanted to see Miranda win; I was really disappointed about that :/

Martinez is brilliant and has been since beating Saul Roman which IMO is when he bounced back into the radar with that win.
Since then he never let off, the pic of he and I is after he beat Bunema.
Really cool guy...

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
I've been impressed with Martinez for awhile, more so since about the Bunema fight... I thought Pavlik would win this encounter but I'm glad I was wrong. You can now mark me down officially as a full on Martinez supporter & fan!!!

hahaha retarded, we actually have a very involved system which has resulted in these rankings. Glad to see that you consider over a years work of over 10 members based on the initial view of the entire forum retarded. But there is a system, there is a reason.
Williams wins at 160
Kolle - Unranked
Wright - Ranked #7 (which gains his spot)
Martinez - Unranked at middleweight when he fought there.
Martinez - #1 at 154 beat Pavlik #1 at 160 to take the championship.
To move up in rank in our system you have to beat someone ranked higher or fight someone ranked to get bumped up, Williams has not done that hence his rank at #7.
I can justify through our system the rank of every single person on that list. This isn't some arbitrary p4p ranking.
Your move sir show your non-retarded middleweight rankings, else it's just talk.

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
I must say it was an impressive performance by Martinez and being down there in A.C. on Saturday he certainly did win some new fans with that performance.

Re: And NEW Middleweight Champion of the world...
The win didnt really suprise me to be honest, like Manny said, Martinez was always a horrible match-up for Pavlik. Too much speed, angles, and cuteness. It did look like Pavlik had found Sergio's groove, but Martinez showed the will to win and found another gear. I like Kelly, I dont think there is a reason not to like the bloke, but he will always struggle with clever or quick, or both, fighters.
A great win for Martinez, the guy is real quality.
