Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
Had a day off today so I thought I would watch some old fights and decided to stick on my favourite scrap of all time - a scrap is definitely the word for it. No matter how many times I watch this I still find myself shaking my head in disbelief in just how good it really was. I still can't get my head around the fact that neither of the two punched themselves out.
The tenth round was just unbelievable. For Corrales to get up from two knock downs, have a point taken away for excessive gum shield spitting, knowing he has to get a KO then unleashing those blows - unreal. Some people said at the time that Tony Weeks stepped in too early but that is just stupidity - you didn't need to be a renowned referee to see his Castillo was in big trouble at that point.
Definitely, imo, the best boxing match of all time.
That is all.
RIP Diego.

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
Best fight of all time?...No not at all many old time fights can match the brutality of that one...That fight sticks out so much because of the drama that unleashed in the end..
One of my favorite fights for sure as they both are 2 of my favorite fighters of the last 10 years...Each man came to fight every time not just to collect a payday...
I miss Diego around the sport....Though he was pretty much done as a fighter before he died the guy was so likable....

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
Yea honestly guys you need to treat yourself to some closet classics.
Matthew Saad Muhammad vs Marvin Johnson 1
Kevin Kelley vs Derrick Gainer 1/Troy Dorsey
Kelvin Seabrooks vs Thierry Jacob/Orlando Canizales 1
Wilfredo Gomez vs Lupe Pintor
Just a few that come to mind.

the drama at the end ads to it all to make it the great fight it was. It's got to be up there as one of the greatest. Granted there probably has been greater battles. I can safely say it's one of the best I've seen.
Icb I will check some of those fights out. Thanks for the heads up
Job biscuit ( why do u do it when u no how it makes me feel, we've been thru all that shit and u just turn ur back on me. For once u were my brother, now my sworn enemy. Tragic shame I swear, we could of been great )

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
Yeah it's a great fight but I really hate the way it ends. :-\

Abruptly? Would've been interesting to see who would've won the fight if it had've gone to the judge's scorecards.

Assuming he hadn't have got the TKO and the fact he was knocked down, the scores would've been level going into the final round? Would've been the right way for the fight to end imo.

The right way for a fight to end is both men doing their best be it to win a KO, keep boxing till the final bell rings or go for the KO...Other then that I can not understand what you mean by right way to end?

Sorry I didn't explain that very well. What I meant was no fighter deserved to lose that fight. Both put in the performances of their lives and a just way for the fight to end, would've been for it to have gone to the judges cards. And then for it to be resulting in a draw. In a perfect world. :D

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
IMO it is the greatest fight of all time. I will one day get the Richard Slone painting of the fight tattooed onto my midsection. Best fight of all time is subjective, why would you object to someone calling it their favorite?

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
Corrales castillo is my favorite of all time. I can still remeber watching it the first time....I went out drinking all night and had taped the fight. Next morning I popped it in when I woke up at 2pm and was at the edge of my bed after a couple rounds.....forgot about my hangover. :o

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
One of the best ever. Must dig it out soon!
MAB-Morales just can't be beaten IMO, it's like a great fight with a ton of polish, almost pure boxing perfection and match making heaven, all rolled into the heart and determination of two guys that would not be denied.
I don't think half of that even makes sense but that's my effort of trying to describe how I feel watching it.

I agree. Like usual. I think we've discussed this several thousand times over the years. Corrales - Castillo is arguably my second favorite fight of all time, but nothing I've seen has ever topped MAB - Morales I.

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
Corrales-Castillo is my top 5, but ALi-Frazier I was and still is my no. 1. Both undefeated HW champions in their physical prime with different segments of American society backing one guy over the other. Fast paced and action packed also.

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
I wouldn't agrue with any of the three to be honest, I just feel that the war, the knockdowns and then the comeback from Corrales was just like, "holy shit, can you believe, woah, what the hell man"..... ha
Job Biscuit (make just one and it will happen)

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
It was a great scrap. A throwback. Every now and then we all would get a little disheartened with the boxing politics and the shite matches and mismatches masquarading as title fights and then a fight like Corrales and Castillo comes along and everythings alright again

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
I remember reading about this fight the day it happened and I thought fuck I bet its over rated. Then finally 2 days later it was aired on australian fox sports and I made sure to watch it and I was like :o It is my favourite fight of all time because it happened in my generation and its just great. Two warriors showing no signs of giving up and just met in the centre of the ring and just traded shots all night. Fuckin great stuff!!!

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
I just noticed Diego/Castillo 1 took place 5/7/05 and Diego died 5/7/07. He died exactly 2 years after first Castillo fight. 5/7 is date of biggest win and his trajedy.

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
I'm pretty much with you on this one Kel. Castillo - Corrales & MAB - Morales are my two favourite fights! It's really difficult to say which one tops it though. You just can't beat the drama at the end in the Castillo-Corrales fight.

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
I can't believe I forgot to mention audley Harrison vs danny Williams , that's in my top 3. Both fighters left it all in the ring that night, it was real emotional drama, I think I even shed a tear or two.

Re: Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo
I had always kind of liked boxing as a side sport, but never really got into any weights other than heavyweight.. I was pretty much a casual fan that enjoyed watching it whenever it was on TV...
I joined this forum to get tips because I was starting to do a little bit of boxing myself,,,, and this fight had just happened around the time I joined her.. I heard constant chatter about how great it was, so it was the first fight I downloaded and after watching it I was completely and utterly hooked on the pugilistic arts... What a fight for anything I watch after that to live up to...
You couldn't ask for anything more from two fighters in the ring, and that has really set the standard for what boxing means to me at it's purest form...
However my favorite fight of all time will always be MAB vs Morales 1... I loved both of those fighters and that was the most spectacular fight that you could image.. 12 rounds of just unbelievable action.. You could almost say at least 10 of those rounds were as good as any round you could see... Just amazing... When you thought one fighter was getting the upper hand for the 100th time, the other would come back off the ropes and rip into the other...
Those 2 fights were the first ones I will make a casual fan watch to try to turn them into a really admirer... But I honestly don't think they realise how special those fights were and don't really get that excited about them...
A few fights like that a year, on that scale, and you could almost say boxing will never die..
