Is It Just Me Or Has Floyd Mayweather Jr Not Been As.....
Impressive ? people keep saying how great Floyd Mayweather Jr has looked recently. But i just don't see it personally, im a big Floyd Mayweather Jr fan. But he just doesn't seem as impressive to me, as he once was at Super Featherweight/Lightweight.
He beat JMM over 12 rounds, but i don't think that was an overly impressive performance. He basically just used his advantages like his reach and size ETC.
JMM struggled at Lightweight so obviously he wasn't going to look, impressive at Welterweight. So im not really sold on that fight at all, it was a mismatch and all Floyd Mayweather Jr did was pot-shot here and there.
Against Ricky Hatton he won a majority of the rounds, but again i still don't think he looked overly impressive. He had a few problems early, and as i said even though he won a majority of the rounds.
Up until the KO it mostly a messy fight with alot of holding. Plus remember Ricky Hatton isn't as effective at Welterweight.
Especially when you compare what Manny Pacquiao done to Ricky Hatton, at his own weightclass Jr Welterweight.
The ODLH fight was at Jr Middleweight so i can't fault him for that, but even against Carlos Baldomir. I wasn't blown away with his performance either.
I think his last great performance was against Arturo Gatti, and his last threat was against ODLH or maybe Jose Luis Castillo.
Maybe im being too harsh here, but its just something's i've noticed.
I mean we could easily say the same about Shane Mosley, regarding some of his performance. But he still pulled them out in exciting fashion, like against Ricardo Mayorga.
I still think he has the speed and power, to trouble Floyd Mayweather Jr. And i honestly don't think Floyd Mayweather Jr has fought a legit threat at Welterweight yet either.

Re: Is It Just Me Or Has Floyd Mayweather Jr Not Been As.....
for me he has looked impressive but i agree that he hasnt been as impressive in the higher weight catagories as he was in the lower. he definately struggled with oscar, i thought hatton gave him alot of trouble early on and marquez, well he did dominate him but like u say marquez had no business up at welterweight, i think he should of really got marquez out of there. mosley is definately his toughest opponent, not just that but mosley is big and strong and has been in and around this weight for a long time. all things considered i think mosley wins tomorrow night

I normally value your posts, cause they're usually quality, but i think this post is due to the fact that there is NOTHING else to talk about.
Mayweather looked ridiculously sharp against marquez.. you said he used his advantages of size, etc.. but it's not like he was just absolutely the bigger puncher and battered marquez.. not even close.. he was the same mayweather.. Against Hatton, with Hatton's style, he did have a bit of adapting to do at the beginning and it wasn't pretty, but by round 6ish, Floyd was winking to his corner when Hatton was holding him, it wasn't even close..
as far as Oscar, it wasn't like Roy Jones went toe to toe for 12 rounds with John Ruiz at heavyweight.. you can't expect someone who started near 130 to fight at 154, coming into the fight around 149-150, and not use his 'advantages' in speed and evading.. I think that the Oscar fight was scored closer than it actually was, but Floyd was clearly fighting the bigger man and didn't do a LOT in the fight, but plenty enough to impress me and the judges.

ohh, and to answer your question, It's just you.

Re: Is It Just Me Or Has Floyd Mayweather Jr Not Been As.....
If you go down that road you can pick at anyone.
Manny Pacquiao, yes he looked good recently but he's fought a ODLH who was never going to be anything like comfortable at 147 and he looked very ordinary in his last fight before that at 150lbs catchweight vs Forbes. Then he fought Hatton who suffered a heavy KO to Mayweather and then fought 2 people who didn't really have the power to KO him and then Pac looked great because of the damage Mayweather had done already. He was good against Cotto but he hadn't looked great since he was battered for 11 rounds by a man with plaster in his gloves. And then Clottey was just stood there throughout the fight with his hands up with nothing but surviving in mind.
Mosley, He was quite soundly beaten by Cotto (pre Marg) then he fought Mayorga who Oscar destroyed a few years earlier when Mayorga was fresher, and was getting beat (although somehow not according to the judges) when he produced a great KO and then he fought a man who it could be argued had built his reputation by cheating and was too good for him without his plaster to crash into his opponent.
You can look at most people and add a negative vibe and start to doubt them. I prefer to think of Mayweather since his move upto Welter like this. He battered a past his best Mitchell after his masterclass vs Gatti. He fought Zab Judah who caused him a few problems until he just figured out where he was going wrong, corrected it and then took over. Then he fought Baldomir who's biggest talent was his sheer toughness so he just used his speed and defensive skills to make sure of a very boring victory although he didn't lose a single second of the fight. He then took on a legend in Oscar out of his own (Floyds) comfort zone and despite going behind early on made Oscar start to amke mistakes and stop using the jab and then took over that fight too. He then moved back down to Welter and fought Ricky Hatton who at the time was in great shape and looked very good at welter IMO, but despite Rickys early aggressiveness causing a few problems that he could handle to be fair, he again took over as the fight went on and scored a great KO over an unbeaten fighter. He then retired and didn't fight for 2 years, came back fought a man who many had in the top 2 p4p and totally outclassed him for 12 rounds and the only time he really got caught clean, he stepped back and then floored Marquez. For me that showed his complete control in that fight against a man who was supposed to be the 2nd best counter puncher in the world only to Floyd himself.

I understand your stance on Floyd's career above SFW, but why are you giving a play by play of Floyd "Pretty Boring" Mayweather? I have sadly paid for almost all of his fights, and I am sure most people on here have seen these fights, too. We know what happened. I 90% agree with the post question in that Floyd hasn't fought anyone to show any heart or determination in the ring for a LONG time, so it's rather hard to say he's a ATG Welterweight. I'll have some props waiting for Floyd if he mows through Mosley.
To be completely honest about Mosley vs Margarito... Mosley would have beaten him either way (plaster or not). Margarito could barely put a glove on Sugar. And NO way you have Mayorga ahead in his fight with Mosley. Close, maybe.. but c'mon man.
I feel a little Mayweather nut-hugging all up in this post.

Well... he had a titanic 7 inches reach advantage... that's what I call the hell of an advantage.

JMM was far too small at Welterweight, it was a complete mismatch in every single way. I don't really call that a proper fight, as i said just look at all the advantages Floyd Mayweather Jr had.
I think every single top Welterweight would of beaten JMM at Welterweight, its not hard too look sharp against a slow/plodding out of shape Featherweight.
I never said he should of stood toe to toe with ODLH, as i said i give Floyd Mayweather Jr credit for the win and it was a risk. And ODLH did have the weight advantage, but he was a part time fighter only having 3 fights in 3 years.
As for Ricky Hatton well put it this way, compare that performance to a similar fighter in Jesus Chavez. And then tell me what was more impressive, Floyd Mayweather Jr was excellent against Jesus Chavez. Being masterfully defensive and very offensive at the sametime.
Against Ricky Hatton it was a dirty/clinching one punch at a time fight, from both men. And to me it wasn't an overly impressive performance until the KO.
As i said im a big Floyd Mayweather Jr fan, but IMO i just don't think he's looked that great at Welterweight. Which obviously he wouldn't since he's moved up.
But this is the first fighter in ages. Which i think is a legit threat to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I had Shane Mosley vs Miguel Cotto a draw.

Re: Is It Just Me Or Has Floyd Mayweather Jr Not Been As.....
The 1st thing I was looking for in the Mayweather fight was some idea of how fast he still was... I think the 1st punch he threw was a left hook. I missed it.
He is still frighteningly fast!
The only thing is, I dont think he can maintain that speed through combinations.

Creatures of habit..his body probably has forgotten how to, because pot shotting is much safer...In the judah fight even lennox lewis noticed that he'd just throw one straight right and lean in to hold...
I'd be surprised if he threw more than two punches together at all against Mosley

Your last comment is exactly my point mate, i honestly don't think he has been as impressive like he was at the lower weightclasses. Just remind yourself folks how offensive he was at the lower weightclasses, and the combinations he threw. While being excellent defensively.

True, but I don't think the problem is his skills as such. The problem now is that he picks and chooses when he tries for a K.O, if at all.
Yes, he plays it safe..but look at Round 8 of the Hatton fight - He turned it on and absolutely lit Hatton up. Ricky was crying for mummy by the end of that round. He could probably fight at that pace for the whole fight...he just chooses not to these days. Hence he gets the "boring" tag from anyone who hasn't followed him at 140 and below.
Those that have know he is far from boring and is one of the most exciting offensive fighters of this era when he chooses to be.

I agree here - The best thing you can do to bring Floyd Mayweather out of his shell is HIT HIM!!
I know it's hard but land a shot on him and he becomes a spoilt, tit for tat, brat (poet!)
Watch him vs Corley - When he got hurt, he came back all guns blazing and both fighters were landing big shots on each other. When the round ended he jumped up and down like an over-excited kid! Was hilarious.

Re: Is It Just Me Or Has Floyd Mayweather Jr Not Been As.....
In a way I can see what Ice is saying. He's never had one of those wow fights where you really take notice. Mosley had 1 last time vs Margarito but Floyd hasnt because he wins fights on points with safety first tactics and he hasnt met anyone capable of beating him. Basically every fight he has gone into, we knew he would win before the 1st bell. This is the 1st time thats not happeing.
I remember the days when nobody cared about Floyd. He demanded more money but nobody wanted to buy his fights. He should thank Oscar for giving him a chance on the big stage. Since then Floyd has been in the public eye and this zero he has on his record seems to mislead people that he is invincible. He fought Hatton next and HBO had Ricky ahead after 6 rounds. A washed up Tszyu did better than that after 6 rounds. If Ricky did what he did in the 1st half or the 2nd half he would have won. He couldnt keep it up just as Oscar and Judah let their leads go aswel. Then Floyd got a points win over Marquez which is no better result than Norwood and John got over Marquez at the Mexicans prime weight when he was at his best.
Now comes Mosley who is touching 40. The fact is Mosley at this advanced age and coming off 5 losses is the biggest test Floyd has ever had. If a limited guy like Castillo pushed Floyd close then so will Shane tomorrow.

Ledermans card means nothing...Hatton was never coming close to winning that fight. The real judges had Floyd was up..which he was.
1st Castillo fight..Floyd has a torn rotator..Respectfully gives him an immediate rematch and removes any doubt.
The whole "every fight he has gone into we knew he would win" is so untrue lol it amazes me how many people say that after picking against him. ODLH people picked against him, Hatton people picked against him..hell, I even saw an old post a while back where Daxx picked Baldomir to "steam roll" him!
I agree with you on this - Mosley should give him something to think about..but if he doesn't? Or Floyd is too good? "We knew he would win before he even stepped into the ring"

?? WTF?
You being serious? Mayweather just broke him down and worked him out simple as that, Hatton was his usual predictable self and Floyd adapted and busted him up, you mention same happened in the other two fights do you not see a pattern emerging? Floyd comes on stronger as the fight goes on.

...he's looked good enough to get pac (who's looked great recently) to say he can't take the same test floyd and shane are willing to take to avoid fighting him for whatever millions of dollars he would have made. Another thing i take into account is floyd isn't a fighter he's a boxer. He's more than content to do enough to win and keep his brains intact in his later years. No use making millions if you can't even keep your hands from shaking long enough to get any of it out of the atm, assuming you can even remember you pin number at that point. Same will go for saturday, this will be a boring uneventfull fight. Floyd will do just enough needed to win as always. He takes his chances here and there but they are few and far between. Can't say i really blame him. This is boxing not Ko'ing.

Please tell me what that has to do with your topic (what i highlighted in bold)? You asked has Mayweather not been as impressive. That is quite objective considering you're referring to specific events/fights. Regardless of his advantages, did he look impressive? You're getting off track..
Has he looked impressive? He KO'd hatton who was undefeated, without getting touched.
He beat DLH at his highest weight to date without taking many punches at all.
He beat JMM without breaking a sweat.
How could he look more impressive? We're not talking about strength of opposition, that has NOTHING to do with this topic, you simply asked if he has looked impressive in his recent fights.
I think you're smart enough to know that he wasn't going to KO DLH and most likely wasn't going to KO JMM, so again, this is just a topic becuase there is nothing else to talk about.

?? WTF?
You being serious? Mayweather just broke him down and worked him out simple as that, Hatton was his usual predictable self and Floyd adapted and busted him up, you mention same happened in the other two fights do you not see a pattern emerging? Floyd comes on stronger as the fight goes on.
Not on my card. Im saying Hatton is trash but HBO had him ahead after 6 so Im saying Floyd was behind according to his own Countries commentary.
Quote:
I agree with you on this - Mosley should give him something to think about..but if he doesn't? Or Floyd is too good? "We knew he would win before he even stepped into the ring"
Yeah If Floyd wins it will be the 1st time he has been up against it and won but Im sure people will still say he was beating an old man coming off 5 losses.

Hence
he gets the "boring" tag from anyone who hasn't followed him at 140 and below.
Those that have know he is far from boring and is one of the most exciting offensive fighters of this era
when he chooses to be.
I don't care how you split that apple. He choses to be boring all the time. I do not think that he tried to KO Hatton. I think Hatton tried to go for broke, and couldn't hit him. I actually give Hatton props for not abandoning his game plan. With his tiny little arms he wasn't going to be able to compete from the outside, and on the inside he was getting elbowed and broken apart by the ref.. Floyd hit him once at a time until he could just hit the heavy bag that was Ricky Hatton standing there in front of him by the 8th or 9th round.. Nice win for Floyd, no doubt, but don't think b/c he got the KO that makes him exciting WHATSOEVER.
Floyd showed zero class in that fight, and did not win me over as a fan.
Against Marquez he tried to KO him in the 2nd or 3rd and gave up after that. First time I'd seen Floyd go fro a KO in AGES! But, alas, He was content to box from the outside for 10 more rounds against the little featherweight.
I will give Floyd a ton of credit if he tries to fight Shane. But he will not. I really wish him luck against Sugar. I hope he blocks every punch with his stupid ****ing face.

Are you a Pac fan? I seriously doubt if Mayweather gives a f*ck that you find his 'boxing skills' boring or not. Boxer's couldnt care less if they are exciting for your ass sitting at home, they want to make money, the sensible thing would be to make money while not getting hurt. If you can't appreciate sombody's 'boxing skills' go into your city centre and watch the piss-heads go at it.

Re: Is It Just Me Or Has Floyd Mayweather Jr Not Been As.....
Aside from bouncing Corrales like a ball and starching an undefeated but hook prone Hatton hes not and never has been explosive, jaw dropping. And hes completely fine with that and what the fans think is irrelevant.I think he'll go down as having never been maximized and the if's,would haves and could haves will always come up.Partly because he simply is that talented but I think equally hes just too content to collect trinkets and coast at times. Now you cannot fault a guy for being untouchable but you can fault him for not putting himself in the heat of the frey rather than talking about how great he is at every turn.Hes a phenominal talent but I think he needs Manny rather than the other way around in regards to definitive legacy.

Re: Is It Just Me Or Has Floyd Mayweather Jr Not Been As.....
I agree ICE, looking at the state of his opposition.
Gatti
Baldomir
ODLH
Hatton
Marquez
Mitchell
Judah
Each and everyone of these 'names' were way past their prime. Just names that he needed to feed off to gain popularity.
When the Welter division was hot Floyd retired, came back to fight a 135lb fighter due to his P4P status as no.2, even fucked him on the scales like a bastard.
Shane, just like all the names above is a fight or two at the end of his career. Fact. None of them 'names' are close to their primes, no argument, don't reply saying Baldomir was champ, I don't care, he was shit. End of.

How dare you speak of the great Baldoblaster that way..He beat judah, who beat spinks, who beat mayorga, who beat forrest, who beat undefeated SSM, who beat arguably undefeated Oscar, who beat pernell whitaker, who schooled the great JCC, who beat Meldrick taylor,
I mean isn't Carols's record impeccable? Look at all those p4p names on that list...

Re: Is It Just Me Or Has Floyd Mayweather Jr Not Been As.....
yeah, i think he looks less impressive at the weight he is now. In the marquez fight he looked a bit heavier and slower. Probably largely to do with the lay off, but also he's naturally filling out as he gets older.
At any rate, i don't think extra bulk adds any advantages to his style of fighting, it might even slow his reactions down a little and effect his stamina. It could add more punching power but he reputedly has brittle hands so it doesn't give him any advantage he can use there either.
-
Re: Is It Just Me Or Has Floyd Mayweather Jr Not Been As.....
The last DANGEROUS fights Floyd had were Genaro Hernandez, Diego Corrales, and Jose Luis Castillo....De la Hoya was KIND of dangerous but hell he didn't have his trainer for that fight either so you have to expect he was kind of off for that fight just a little bit.
Shane Mosley is dangerous, but he's also a tad older, a tad slower, but he's still got a solid chin good work ethic and enough power to spark out Antonio Margarito so he's got the power to stop Floyd.
I just wish we got to see Mayweather-Cotto, that would have been a VERY dangerous (and big money) fight before Miguel fought Margarito.

7 names out of a 40 fight career. Plus Hatton, Baldomir and I would even say DLH wasn't far removed from his prime. About as out of prime as Mayweather was and all advantages were in his favour.
Lol I love how Mayweather is "ageless" in these "past prime" arguments - You think Floyd was in his prime against ODLH? Hell no. You think Floyd is in his prime tonight? Absolutely not.
Now, if I remember correctly, you're a Calzaghe fan right?
As you're in a list-creating mood, can you please get started on the list of 44 nobodies and past prime fighters JC fought out of his 46 fights?
Take your time, thanks ;)
