impressive us debut. is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
poll included

Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
I can't see the poll. To be honest though he will probably be more popular in the US than over here sadly as most want only to hate on him.
It's great though for a fan to see him doing well. I said when he lost to Breidas Prescott that he would come back and could be beating the likes of J M Marquez and Ricky Hatton within a couple years and was laughed at.
Now he'd start an overwhelming favourite against Hatton I'd imagine and would probably even be odds on to beat Marquez if the fight took place at 140.
His chin is such that against a puncher he will always be vulnurable, but Roach has made him a much better fighter so hopefully he can overcome that.
I'm sure he will come a cropper a couple more times in his career, but I can definitely see him winning more world titles and winning some big profile fights.
When you compare him against Bradley, Maidana, Alexander and Ortiz you wonder if his chin can hold up against them all. But the flip side is if they can't land and stop him, can they outbox him?
He's a real threat and one of the absolute hottest potential new stars in the sport.
Over here being a muslim and a Pakastani means he's not popular but in the states that may make him a more colourful character and boost his box office appeal. He's definitely well on the way to becoming the next Hatton as far as the US market is concerned, even though he is unlikely to ever have that fanbase and place in the hearts of the public over here.

Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
i already voted in the poll. i can see it.
imo khan will win the hearts of his uk haters if he keeps on winning in impressive fashion and eventually become the darling of uk boxing fans.
i've read his next fight could be on july 31 in uk and maybe against maidana. how big a win could that be for khan?
-
Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
My fav is David Haye, and a close second behind John Murray.
I think if Khan beats Maidana that will shut everyone up, or shut alot of people up. Last night was a good win for me, the way he kept Paulie away pretty with a great jab and his countering was very fast. Only thing I didn't like about his performance last night, and in general really, is that he has a very strange habit of when he tries the put punches together he gets very square on and throws the punches like pistons, and it looks ridiculous. Aside from that I was impressed last night. And to think that they were looking to be heading toward a Mitchell Khan fight. Ha....

Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
Probably not. A lot of people want to see him get knocked out. David Haye is probably the closest, but even he isn't what Hatton was imo.

No, people know that he is a decent fighter. People dont like his attitude he talks out of his arse most of the time, thats why alot of people dont like him it has got nothing to do with his boxing ability imo.

I'd kinda disagree there.
The people that hate him still criticise his boxing ability. No matter who he beats and how, they will find fault. That's just the way some folk are.

Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
No can't see him ever being popular over here now. too many haters from the outset as audley did etc..
I don't like him - no secret - but he did do a clinical job last night. Just tired of his mouth how he wants to face him and him and him etc.. but we all know the next opponent will be a good 'but not dangerous' one.
I have a long way to go before I have posters of him on my wall like Miles does thats for sure
-
Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
He could become, but it will take 2 things: 1) 2-3 extra good and impressive wins, 2) to give his manager his twitter account and to stop being an idiot outside the ring. Could he manage that, his popularity will raise importantly.

I think he is a good fighter but i dislike him because of the way he presents himself and the dumbshit he does if he had a decent chin to back up his stupidity i would be more inclined to support him but he doesn't.

Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
Khan will never ever get the fanbase that David Haye has got here nor be more popular in this country than Haye.

I agree, he just talks way too much poo for me without the back-up. But he's getting there I'd say. He's beat paulie now, which is years ahead of what Hatton achieved at his age.

That's fair enough, i can see how his talk can annoy folk, but i do just think he opens his mouth without thinking, it's nothing malicious he says, just 'daftness'.
I still sense a hatred of him from some quarters which i just can't fathom though, as he really doesn't warrent that IMO.

Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
As has been previously mentioned, I think Khan's conduct out of the ring is what will prevent him from becoming the darling of the UK fans. He's a good fighter, who has overcome a suspect chin with the help of one of the best trainers in the world, and as Bilbo mentioned will be fighting at the top level for years to come.
Personally, I support most British fighters unless they come over as being particularly obnoxious, and I look forward to seeing Khan go from strength to strength, but I doubt he'll ever fight in a style that will make him my favourite.

Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
Why would beating a very unlikable Paulie Malignaggi, make him the new darling of the UK ? i knew as soon as this fight was announced. That Amir Khan would dominate Paulie Malignaggi. I told Bilbo that Amir Khan would be able to walk right through him, when he realize's Paulie Malignaggi poses no danger power wise. But he obviously would of known that before the fight.
Which is why the fight was chosen, Paulie Malignaggi is somewhat of a name in the US. And its a good fight for Amir Khan, to look dominant in his US debut. Im still not sold on him.
Yes it was a good performance and he showed a good jab, but he was caught quite a few times early on. Its just Amir Khan was able to man handle him because Paulie Malignaggi is weak.
Paulie Malignaggi isn't a bad boxer and its good Amir Khan outboxed him, but i still don't think Paulie Malignaggi is that good. Outside of the 2nd Juan Diaz fight, and taking a good beating from Miguel Cotto, he's looked mostly mediocre in alot of his fights.
Can i just say to the Americans that the reason us Brits, don't like him. Is because of his attitude outside the ring, aswell as other incidents. As a boxer i think he's fine but he's still got alot of proving to do, beating Paulie Malignaggi didn't prove that much to me.
He should revenge his defeat to Breidis Prescott, because that loss won't go away. Until he revenges it, i think he should do that, before he thinks about anything else. If Kevin Mitchell can outbox Breidis Prescott, Amir Khan should be able to.
And i'll respect him for doing that, then i'll start getting behind him as a boxer forgetting his outside life.

Even if he beats Prescott, that loss is still there because it was spectacular. He'll always be one punch away from being ko'd whenever he fights even a mediocre hitter. If he beats Prescott it'll just means he's gone 1-1 with a banger.

No it will show he has improved, and he has the heart to go in with a puncher, and revenge his loss like a man.

Considering Prescott's subsequent career I'd say fighting him now would be a step backwards for Khan. Maidana can bang a bit, why no tbe happy if he fights him, in a fight that HBO can actually sell?

I don't think it does. 9 times out of 10 that version of Khan probably beats Prescott anyway. He's unlikely to face Prescott now anyway. His stock has dropped quite a lot since he beat Khan.
-
Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
Bilbo and Ono, he needs to revenge that defeat. Yes fighting Marcos Rene Maidana, would also be a good fight. But i would like him to revenge that defeat, Oliver McCall's stock had dropped when Lennox Lewis fought him aswell. But he still fought him and revenged that defeat. I think Amir Khan would get alot of credit for beating a puncher, and revenging his only loss.
-
Re: is amir khan the new darling of uk boxing fans?
I hope the guy gets popular if he can continue to win, every guy deserves it i guess. I know a lot of people hate him and he sends out nudie photos or whatever but he's a kid. He's got a little bit of fame a little bit of cash of course he's going to be an asshole. I didn't learn too much last night cause we all already knew he could box i wanted to see how he would take a couple of clean hard shots. But he barely even let paulie ( who granted probably couldn't ko my daughter if you offerered her half of what khan got to stay up 12 rounds ) get the chance to. I want to see if khan can fight that same way when he has to actually worry about what might come back. Anyhow i like him more than i did before last night anyway. They are matching him very smart, but his job is to beat whoever is there.....and he is. Good enough for me.

Yes beating Marcos Rene Maidana would make up for it, he hits just as hard if not harder than Breidis Prescott. And he holds a version of a world title, so yes beating a puncher like Marcos Rene Maidana. Would answer alot of questions for me.
But it would be nice if at some point he could revenge that loss, just to say he has beaten every man he has faced. Obviously as i said beating Marcos Rene Maidana is just as good if not better, but its just nice to have the luxury. Of rubbing off that one bad loss.

He doesn't need to fight Prescott again, he just needs to show he can beat a guy that can really punch. Maidana would do, after he beats him some would just say he beat a slow, crude guy but I think overall he'd get more credit.

from the responses, i deduce amir is 2 to 3 impressive wins away from becoming the darling of uk boxing fans. right now he's more of a floyd jr uk version. good boxing skills but brash outside the ring.

I wouldn't deduce that from this thread. He might become the most well known but I think in terms of affection people will always go for down to earth guys like Mitchell, Murray, Moore et al.

I think Miles would still be writing his vitriolic little pieces about how overrated he is even were he to be considered the greatest of all time.
