Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Quote:
By Lem Satterfield
A few weeks ago, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer had tried to create a rematch between Bernard Hopkins and the recently retired Joe Calzaghe of Wales. After a have few positive conversations, Calzaghe made a decision to stay retired. With a Calzaghe rematch out of the way, Schaefer is exploring the possibility of matching Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KOs) against undefeated IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (26-0, 21 KOs).
If Schaefer is able to reach an agreement with Interbox, who promote Bute, he would like to stage the fight in the fall. Bothe fighters saw action in the month of April. Hopkins won a twelve round unanimous decision in a rematch with Roy Jones Jr. Bute stopped Edison Miranda in three rounds. The Hopkins-Bute fight would likley take place at a catch-weight between 168 and 175-pounds. In several past interviews, Hopkins said he was able to make 170-pounds for a fight with Bute.
"I actually talked with our friend at Interbox Promotions, Jean Bedard, who is the CEO of Interbox, which promotes Lucian Bute. We spoke about the possibility of putting together a fight with Bernard Hopkins. And they would be open to doing a fight between Bute and Hopkins," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.
"And so we're currently discussing that. The fight would be sometime between September and November -- somewhere between that window. That's what we would like to do. And I'm waiting for Jean Bedard to get back to me."

Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Hopkins looked totally shot to me against Jones Jr. He needs to accept that he is boring and past it and that nobody has any real interest in seeing him fight on.
Bute probably outworks or even stops Hopkins at this stage.

Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Bute has just begun to reach his prime....And he looks great, Hopkins is past it holding on to what once was...He is not a walkover in any way and knows how to survive but he has to call it a day...He has become painful to watch in the ring...
Bute takes a UD after some ugly moments caused by Hopkins if this goes off but I don't see it to be honest unless GBP offers some big big money...Butes people are looking for the winner of the SSix
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Schaefer said Hopkins was going to fight Calzaghe this fall so I take everything he says with a pinch of salt to be honest.
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
I've always been a Hop fan but Bute is just too quick and skilled at this point in Hopkins' career for even HIS crafty techniques to work on. Hopkins has slowed and his output is far declining. He's become more of a target and gives up early rounds.
Hopkins' farewell should have been the Pavlik fight. He will never look that good again.
Bute wins rounds 1-6 and a few down the stretch for a UD. That's how I'd see it happening.
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
I think its time for Hopkins to hang em up aswell, hes had his day, now he is simply just pushing it, bute is young, strong, and busy. Hopkins can do well sure, but hell simply get outworked. He avenged Jones (sorta) he needs to say bye. He is a legend he deserves his respect, but enough is enough.

Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Bute UD, afterwards Hopkins still refuses to retire, calls out Roy Jones for a trilogy fight.
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Here is my prediction:
Hopkins will figure out quick he is no match for Bute and will hold and turn the fight into an ugly stinker (as usual)....Hopkins will claim he is getting hit by imaginerary low blows 4 times and the ref will tell him to stop it and that he better protect himself. In the 8th round Bute will throw a straight right to the jaw and hopkins will act like he got hit low and look to ref. Ref will ignore Popkins and Bute will catch him with a sweet uppercut that turns out the lights and hopefully we never have to see hopkins in the ring or otherwise again.........Butes KO of Hopkins will be widely recognized as KO of the year 2010.

That's exactly how I see it. Hopkins is just a horrible fighter to watch these days and he seems to have slipped badly over his last few fights, which isn't surprising given his age. Bute will get caught a couple times, but Hopkins won't be able to hurt him with anything about that his head and it will turn into an ugly, foul-filled (mostly from Hopkins), clinch-fest which Bute will win.
Hopkins needs to go away.

I don't know if we're consulting the same kind of tarots but I was envisioning something like that... perhaps even more theatrical moves from Grand Dad Bernie

Well it seems to be the continuous agreement....I mean it is impressive that Hopkins can get inj and still not be made to look a fool by anyone but his own antics but he is absolutly a zero when it comes to having any real effect on the title scene picture...
He is turning himself into something he need not be because he really is an ATG without question and unlike Holyfield etc he is not coming back for slaughter after slaughter in the skill department when he faces the younger guys but instead he has become an actor..
I guess when you are a partner in GBP it makes it easy to push yourself into high profile bouts...:-\

Only until people refuse to watch those fights, which I think is coming soon for Hopkins.

Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
This sounds just like the feedback on hopkins before the Pavlik fight after him losing to Joe! I think Bute should avoid this fight he doesn't need it.

I don't think Hopkins SHOULD fight again, he looked his age against Roy practically. Thing is people wont stop watching if he were to take actually take a fight like this, can you really tell me you wouldn't care to see it? I think the fact that he is seemingly in such decline and clinging on sort of makes it all the more worthy a matchup given how dangerous Bute could be... Fighting a guy like this is pretty much the only way Hopkins can still get the spotlight, and how shit he's been lately won't really matter if they do this fight in Montreal, it would be huge.
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Yea I would definitely pick Bute to win this but I would urge him really really strongly to NOT take this fight. It would only make him look bad and Hopkins would be in his kitchen all night where Bute isn't comfortable. Bute just wouldn't look good and no way he would KO Hopkins.
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
I feel like a piece of crap for saying it.....but i'd actually like to see this fight. Shit if andrade could beat this guy that first time then i'm pretty sure old ass irritating hopkins will find a way to if nothing else make it close. My call would be hopkins would loose a wide wide uni decision but then act like he can still fight and act like he won afterward.
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
B-Hop vs a Southpaw........oh God, I'd rather have steak knives driven into my eyes than watch that
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Bute better avoid this fight. Old man Hopkins is going to tear his ass apart. Of course Hopkins is old and not the same fighter as in his prime but watch him mug Bute like a South Philly thug. his game plan may be boring and slow but effective. Hopkins is to gritty for Bute. Enough talk, just wait and see. Bute better not take this fight and u guys know it. A total back alley mugging is in store. This shit is going to be funny. Mark my word
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Hopkins is old but I really don't see anything in Bute's style that would bother Hopkins. If edison miranda can find any kind of range on you and hit you consistently I wouldn't
want to think what Hopkins would hit especially with his spoiler style I could see him nailing Bute from the outside with straights and then getting inside and making it dirty and wearing Bute down late.
People seem to always overestimate someone against B-Hop after a bad performance I'm beginning to think its a ploy by Hopkins. Bute has a style Hopkins would pick apart, and for anyone that thinks Bute would stop Hopkins why would Hopkins ever be stopped by anyone? Everyone thought Pavlik would stop him too.

Which fight were you watching? I think Miranda landed one solid right hand in the entire fight.

Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Hopkins looked awful in his last fight and i truly believe he should retire.
I still think Hopkins can beat Bute though.
Bute is a very good fighter (southpaw, good power and speed, good overall skills) but he isn't very good defensively and he appears to have stamina issues.
Another thing i would like to point out is his level of competition because although he has some decent names like Andrade, Bika and Miranda, all of those fighters are punching bags compared to Hopkins. Bute is obviously looking for the big fights but the Super six tourney basically limits his options so he's not all to blame.
I think Hopkins can win based on his sharp lead right hand and his rough tactics should throw Bute off also.
I still think that to beat the current Hopkins you have to put pressure on him and keep him throwing and moving. I don't see Bute being able to do it.
I am wondering what weight this fight will be held at ? 168 obviously appears like an obvious choice because it gives Hopkins the chance to notch a third world title in a different weight class but can he make 168 ? We all know he can make 170 but 168 might be a bit much for him at this stage.
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Bute should win this even at light heavy, maybe after this fight it will be time for B Hop to call it a day.

Care to make a bet if it comes off?...I pick Bute and if I win you leave the site forever and spare us with your wanna be Teddy Atlas analogies...

Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Hopkins is a pain in the ass, a spoiler and he knows how to take cheap shots out of the referee's view. He is known for being totally obnoxious. Just ask Trinidad how hhe felt when the man came out and made nasty comments in front of Trinidad's countrymen. If Bute can get past that, Hopkins will have a concussion that will finally retire him otherwise, it's the same old shit and one more money fight he does not deserve. It's time for the curtain to come down.
-
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
I am sure Bute can win this, especially with Stephane Larouche in his corner but it can't be a nice fight to see by any mean, grabbing, theater and head butt will be at the appointment.

Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Bernard the underdog. Bernard the man who has no chance against Bute. Yes, he is old, disrespectful,a little dirty but this aint no sissy game, and yes ,i said aint. He doesnt have the reflects of the past. Cant fight like he use to be. A complete bum and easy fight. He will make Bute alot of easy money. I hear yall. Why not fight him as a tune up and get paid at the same time. All that being said, this is going to be a complete mugging. South Philly style. I want to see this match up now so bad. Bute the great. make me laugh. Why retire when so many fighters can make easy money fighting Bernard. OK, LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE. Bernard by mugging. This fight wont be made. Bute people are not stupid.

Bute dominated Edison Miranda. Try and watch that one more time. It won't take you very long because Miranda had lost all sense of time and place by the middle of the 4th. That means basically all you need is ten minutes to check it out. The knockout was killer.
But, I agree no one is knocking Hopkins out. In fact, that is the only way this ends well for Bute becaue if he beats Hopkins by decision, people will chalk it up to Hopkins being passed his prime. Hopkins never is an easy opponent and makes for boring fights. The only impressive thing Bute can do is knock Hopkins out, which I feel is impossible.
It would be a test for Bute, but consider when was the last time Bute really was dominated in a round. The only round I've seen Bute lose convincingly in recent memory was the last one with Andrade in their first fight. I mean I haven't seen anyone win a round on him in a while. At least not dominated a round against him. He beat Zuniga, Miranda, and Andrade within four rounds. He was the first person to knock out Andrade - and with a body shot! He won every single round against Bika, well, maybe he lost one, but pretty much dominated the whole entire fight. Joppy and Berrio never really won a round either. Actually, that's not true Berrio may have won a couple, but you get my drift. From never really losing a round, to losing every round against Hopkins, would be a bit wild.

While I agree more then likely he will not stop Hopkins lets not get crazy and not think it could not happen be it against Bute or any of the other SMW at this point...They are all in their primes and all hard hard fighters....Hopkins is past his best severly....He is begging for glory years that escaped him due to the fact he was an ignored champion due to his own attitude for most of his MW reign.....But these guys at SMW Bute, Ward, Froch, Abraham are all tough guys that are willing to get dirty with him....IMO his best chance against Bute is a nasty fight that he will still lose by dec but to say a KO is impossible (Not that you said it inparticular) is a bit overboard....
IMO a fight with Abraham or Froch guys who like that dirty style of fighting would beat Hopkins down at this stage
Who thought Jones would get KO'd by Tarver and Johnson...
Whot thought Tony would get stopped by Mosley? Andrade by Bute? Darchinyan by Donaire etc....All guys no one ever expected to be stopped especially in the fashion they did...Hopkins is just a man like the rest and a man who waayyyy past his best years....
I was once a big big Hopkins fan but now he is just embaressing himself by his antics and performances in the ring and making a mockery of the sport by thinking this is world class and what people want to see...Why does it matter what the people want? Well because in the end thats who really pays the purses

I'd tell Bute, "set the old man on his ass or go home a loser."
Bute is about as good as he will ever get. Hopkins is practically a senior citizen.
"Bute, this grey beard has been in decline for a decade. If he hangs on you like a cheap suit it's because your mama never taught you how to dress. Impose you will on this has been and KNOCK HIM OUT."
Then I'd slap Bute in the face with a bag of ice and call him a mouse turd.

You give a LOT of credit to Bute, who fights a lot of chumps. I mean he's not a cherry picker, but He doesn't exactly beat anyone on the road... ever. And my guess would be he thinks hes a big enough attraction to get the winner to meet him in Canada. And, he gets knocked the f*** out. He's not really that good. When he tires he is downright sloppy. http://www.saddoboxing.com/boxingfor...ies/tongue.gif
But Hopkins? I think Bute beats him soundly. He's got enough skills to make him look bad. Hopkins will have to really work to win on the road against this guy.

Other then the Andrade fight when has he tired? What other fight did he show he gassed? None I can think of......So we will take 1 moment and that was the 12th round of a tough tough fight he was dominating.....In the 12th yes he tired horribly but again how can 1 time be used as the measuring stick?
Fighting Chumps?
All of a sudden Bika is a chump? Bika has been one of the most feared contenders in the SMW division for years now great fighter as in Elite no but he has never been walked over Calzaghe wanted nothing to do with him again...
Andrade is a chump all of a sudden? Wait I know he lost to Kessler who lost to Calzaghe and Ward so Kessler is third rate and since Andrade lost to Kessler that makes him 4th rate regardless of the fact he is one of the divisions most durable fighters and has only lost to 2 of the divisions best fighters in the last 10 years....I guess the KO of Andrade must be because of Librado's glass chin?
Zuniga lost to Inkin, Pavlik and Santos swhen Santos was something the guy is certainly not a walk over since it took Pavlik 9 to stop him and the fact it was Pavlik when Pavlik was the most feared contender from 154-175....
He beat Miranda who has been stopped before but had just put Ward to the limit and is still one of the best 1 shot KO artist in the game....Bute beat him effortlessly...
Berrio is a chump as well I suppose...Former title holder who gave Mack his first loss and current WBO champion Stieglitz...Add in his 80% KO ratio and it makes him a true chump....
The wins that Bute is getting even at home judges can not help you score the KO....
Funny how Calzaghe had people making every excuse in the world when he stayed and fought at home 90% of his career...
26-0 with 21 ko's....Explain how the hometown advantage scored him the 80% KO ratio?
If we broke down the SS participants and their opp before the tourney only Kessler and AA can claim better opp...maybe....Both fight at home a hell of a LOT....Are they chumps as well?
Ward is a chump because his last 2 were at home yes?
C'Mon man back up ypour arguement or at least check your facts before you popst things
