If it is a style like Hatton, at least it's Hatton on his best night. This was kind of like Hatton vs Tszyu and I can live with that.
He's a brilliant fighter though, streets ahead of Ricky.
in his defense Green was the one holding on while on the ropes, but i agree, too much hugging for my liking, but the way he walked down Green and how he (Green) didn't even try to throw back basically shows he should be in the tourey
Oh I agree his style is very effective but he is like watching paint dry, can't stand his style.
Green was the one holding the most, Ward's leading with his head is the biggest rule bending thing he does.
Ward is the ugliest fighter in the world today, we will never see him in a fun fight until he gets knocked out. :p
Tarver is now talking about moving up to HW, Adamek wrecks him in horrible fashion
I hate fighters that throw then hold, usually refs let them get away with that shit. Its just a really cheap style, someone needs to bite his ear off or something.
Ward always keeps one hand free, if he's dirty it's what he does with the head like OumaFan said. Plus like it was said, Green was the one lost on the inside doing that hugging. It's not like he's Wlad Klitschko in there and holding everytime a guy gets within 5 feet of him, you're allowed to do what he did in the ring tonight which is why I'm glad Raul Caiz Sr. was reffing the fight. That was cool.
It looks like we may have a new Hopkins to suffer for the next decade with these type of fights. Successful and we can respect his achievements but it is really awful to watch. When they compared him to Roy Jones it made me style cuz I think he is more like a Ricky Hatton without power.
I dont think he would get away with his tactcis anywhere else but Oakland. He leads with his head and gets up so close and spoils and cuz he has no power you know its going to be 12 rounds. Not sure im gonna buy another Ward PPV unless im a fan of teh guy in the other corner. Green was a disgrace and as we thought he should have never been in this tourny.
Haha. Hatton style. He's better than that. But that was a truly awful fight to watch, as was the kessler fight. I truly hope Dirrell puts a beating on Ward.....
Ward is a talented boxer with a couple of page stolen about John Ruiz and Hopkins about the grappling style. Definitely not my cup.
Does what he has to do to win- without resorting to low blows, elbows, kidney shots....
Not great to watch last night, but he's undefeated anda good role model
I dont see it really as far as the clingy holding just to hold style.Last night Green initiated alot of it and Ward was working on the inside, nice bodywork when in close.I do think we're getting just a biiiit carried away with Hopkins comparisons.Frankly regardless of how much his recent few fights were loathed Hopkins is indeed a fighter in skills and mentality to want to immulate...yeah yeah save for the theatrics and Jones fight for me.I dont see Ward having a longterm shelf life at the top, just get a feeling he gets clipped too much and dont see a fully armored 2nd gear he can go to...strong punch, rifle right hand of Hopkins...the chin (??) and as odd as it sounds, the comfortability in the role of 'bad guy'...Hopkins never allowed himself to be spurned on by the crowd and fans as much as they hissed. He adjusted his style with age and years strictly on his terms allowing such a long preservation after early years of being a fierce attacker.See Ward at this very early stage and high competition stepping in and giving opponents openings in spots.Ward looked good last night but cant get passed thinking Green was suppressing himself as much as Ward was keeping him at bay.he just would not let it go and he has a long history of it.Green came into this overrated imo.Ward has the guile and subtle tricks to build on with speed but these days hype guys and commentators are a bit rash in anointing the "next" Sugar Ray or next best thing.Hes good right now,but he's not yet a great.
