James Toney v Randy Couture
There is a UFC poster showing an upcoming fight between Toney and Couture in August.
Heres some recent photos of Toneys UFC training and he looks pumped like the first Holyfield fight again. Dont want to accuse him of anything but hes been caught a couple of times already;)
JAMES "LIGHTS OUT" TONEY

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
Those pic made Toney look even fatter than he is :o Randy takes this one ground and pound baby! Joe Rogan asked Randy if he was going to take it to the ground his reply...........YEAH ARE YOU STUPID?
-
Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
Glad he is taking this serious but Randy Coture? Unless Toney catches Randy with a real big shot standing up he will be limited in success in this fight....Toney better stop worring about mugging for pics and start picking up on cardio because Coture can go 5 5min HARD rounds....There are no ways to rest in the cage like in boxing...no laying on the ropes just waiting to counter etc

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
I hate Toney but I think he will pick Randy apart.

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
Toney hate for roadwork has been widely documented. He did well in the ring because of his upper body movement. His legs wont hold him up for a five minute round if he doesn't whittle his middle and get that road work in.
The way it looks now, Randy can come in low and take Toney to the ground anytime he wants. They are counting on Toney's strength to be a factor. They're also working that knee it appears. Maybe hoping to catch Randy on the way in. (which could happen if he were to come in straight, but I don't think it will) wouldn't be surprised to see a wrestling clinic before a ground and pound. It's a shame that Randy doesn't chop at your legs all the much. Theres so many ways Toney could be dismantled in this fight.
Not saying any boxer would suffer the same, but a guy that doesn't like to move his feet and counts on upper body movement will be a sitting duck in an MMA fight.

Agreed on all counts but at this stage what Randy does as the norm and what Randy is capable of are 2 different things....IMO Rany can change his game enough for any MMA fighter....Toney is one of my all time favorite fighters but they are 2 different sports....I would say the same thing if an MMA fighter was tryinjg to step in and take on lets say Hopkins for his first boxing match...Sure both full contact sports but of s different type

Agreed.......reggie bush may be good at football, but who gives a crap how he'd fare at rugby. The comparison between the two sports and toney fighting in mma is just plain all around retarded. He'll get his ass kicked just as he should and then what......give it a shot at kickboxing too ??!! Why not, aren't they close enough to being the same too.

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
I think Vitor Belfor also tried his hand at boxing and didn't do so well.
-
Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
I thinmk he only had like 1 or 2 fights against no bodies at home in Brazil...I know Jake Shields boxed so did KJ Noons but against no one special

He is 1-0-0
KO 1
I'd say it was ok

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
Vitor Belfort
Ehhh he didn't do so badly I suppose. But He fought a guy who'd never fought.
James Toney is fighting a guy who has never done anything but fight.

Toney reckons after this he is fighting Haye in October??

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
This is a really stupid imo. Don't get me wrong I'll watch for sure but I don't see this being fun and it's potentially embarassing for the UFC is Toney did win.
I would have much rather seen Toney in with Kimbo Slice, that is a great fight imo and a much better introduction into MMA for Toney than going from no experience to fighting one of the Hall of Famers, seems an absurd matchup.
Can you imagine Randy going into boxing and in his first pro fight fighting James Toney? My guess is he'd be slaughtered, and for the UFC not to suffer embarrassment Randy needs to destroy Toney.
If Toney was able to win the UFC would be left with a huge amount of egg on its face. Of course he is very unlikely to win, which I guess is why Randy is facing him, but a matchup with Kimbo makes more sense imo.
It's not really an embarrassing fight then, you have a former world class all time great boxer, but old, fat and in a sport he's never practice, versus a street fighter who isn't really good but has a large fanbase and a slightly better ground game than Toney I assume.
I think that would be a competitive fight this current matchup blows though. Either James hits a home run in the first few seconds and ends it or he's forced onto the ground and sat on until Randy can force a submission.

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
Here's what David Haye said on the matter:
Quote:
World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye has been called out by James Toney. Toney, who fights Randy Couture in an Ultimate Fighting Championship match on Aug. 28 in Boston, has said he plans to knock out Couture and then to go after Haye.
But Haye, who is a big UFC fan and has trained in mixed martial arts, laughs off Toney’s threats. He doesn’t believe Toney’s going to be able to fight him after he gets pummeled by Couture, though he has mad respect for Toney’s boxing skill and record.
“James Toney is the purest of the pure at boxing,” Haye said. “He is so brilliant at boxing and his skills are so ingrained in him that he’s been an elite level fighter, in shape or not in shape, his skills alone put him on another level as a boxer.
Couture is a former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion who is a decorated wrestler. Haye believes Couture will take Toney down quickly and easily and pummel him on the ground.
“Six months of training isn’t going to be enough,” Haye said. “As a UFC fan, I know two or three years wouldn’t be enough. How many times has Toney sprawled in his life? 500? How many leg kicks has he taken in his life? 300? How many Kimura attempts has he defended? 140? Even if he’s done double that amount, he wouldn’t have nearly the experience needed to win a UFC fight.”
Haye said Toney would be best off if he lands his punches early, because if he’s not finished after grappling with Couture on the ground, he’s going to be surprised by how beaten up and heavy his arms feel.
“I know from training in MMA myself that the wrestling aspect ruins your punching power,” Haye said. “After a minute of grappling, your arms, back and shoulders fill with blood and even if you then find space to throw punches, your power is suddenly crap.
“And I hit a lot harder and I’m so much faster than James, and I couldn’t land a punch on fighters when all they wanted to do was take me down to the ground. James is a much more static fighter than I am, and is going to get thrown on his back immediately by Randy. I admire Toney’s spirit and boxing skills. But he’s delusional here.”

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
I have to agree Toney has been matched with Couture to lose, but at the same time its a stupid idea because if Toney connects and wins it doesnt look very good on MMA at all, i agree kimbo would be a better match up both for MMA and for boxing, still very interesting though. if i was him i wouldnt have even bothered with ground work i would have just done 6 months of sprawling, knee work and switching because once it gets past that point hes going to get wrecked, and even if Toney can keep it stand up that front leg is gonna take a hammering everytime he doesnt move, ive never watched Toney box but if hes as stationary as people are saying then it seems like its gona be a 1 sided fight.
-
Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
I have to agree with Haye 100% on that...I nwas surprised that as cocky as he is even he admitted that with his being in better shape and being more agile then Toney he would not fare any better then he believes James would....
Just 2 different worlds they are MMA and Boxing...Big difference between dirty boxing used in MMA and the boxing used by professional fighters....In that I mean let an MMA fighter try nthe same thing and train 6-8 months as just a boxer then go in against someone of Toneys experience and they will get pummeled...That goes for the best of strikers like a young Lidell or Jackson.....ALSO THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE GLOVES WILL BE APPARENT QUICK...I mean you are used to 8 ounce gloves then get hit with the 4 ounce ones and you know the difference.....
Just not enough time to go in against a guy at Randy;s caliber who BTW keeps himself in better shape cardio wise on a reg basis then Toney.....
Sure Toney will maybe win the stand up but when they hit the ground then what?

As high as can be my dislike for Haye... I think he's right here. a good ground game can suck off a lot of power from the stand up and I am not sure Toney qualifies yet for a great take down defense.

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
a boxer with no takedown defence or atleast a decent sprawl wont will have a hard time against a mma fighter.
anyone remember ali fighting a japanese wrestler?

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
I couldn't give a damn. If Toney isn't boxing then it isn't relevant. This shouldn't be on the boxing forum TBH.
I have no interest in this and it shouldn't be taking up boxing space.

I have contributed nothing more than to say that this is not boxing related and it is not. I like James Toney a lot, but the fact is that the man is not involved in boxing right now.

honestly who cares about this fight|? toney is gonna get dry humped into submissiom#n as soon as coulture gets him to the floor...

The Kellerman Rap video is pretty much useless and should be in LGIO....The thread on if anyone is having problems with box rec has to do with boxing because it is the most visited site when people are checking schedules ratings etc....
Just like the thread of when the runor was when it was being shut down....Thge new owners etc......
You make a comment to Miles about "Yet you are contributing" then have the nerve to say what threads are and are not worthy to be on the front page yourself.....

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
james toney stands as much of a chance against randy in the cage as randy does in a ring against toney

Can't we all just get along ?

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
just what is Toney thinking...
this goes 2 minutes Max with Toney on the floor being choked out
-
Who's threat doesn't Chicken Little laugh off?
James Toney has been matched to lose, but if you were Dana White wouldn't you do that? You wouldn't let a boxer make a fool of your company and your sport would you? Toney could win but he's got a VERY tough fight.
-
Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
This fight is a fucking joke, but what really pisses me off about it is the way the UFC guys (the commentators, White, Couture) are trying to sell James Toney as some kind of legitimate boxer. He's old, shot to bits, and a marginal contender in one of boxing's weakest division.
-
Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
That was one of the most pathetic things I have ever seen.
-
Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
The UFC fans are going wild now, they want Pacquiao and Mayweather to enter the Octagon to suffer the same fate as Toney and saying that those guys are too gutless to enter the octagon in "real" fighting.
Anyways I knew this would be the outcome. When your fat, broke, and punchdrunk, you enter the UFC and be like Toney or Mercer.

agreed, like i posted on another site, James Toney hasn't been relevant in BOXING for over 5 yrs, I'd love to see Couture VS Toney in a boxing match and lets see how long Couture would last
-
Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
An old, fat Toney took another payday, it has no more meaning than that. I despise that sport anyway, it is crude and foul to watch. If a bunch of know nothing meatheads want to give that bout meaning, well good for them. It has nothing to do with reality though.
-
Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
Maybe we can have a Bas Rutten - Vitali Klitschko boxing match next. It would be pretty much the exact same thing. Any UFC, or boxing, fan who thinks this was in any way legitimate is a fucking moron. They're two totally different sports.
-
Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
lol @ Toney been training 9 months. at what, stuffing hot dogs in his face quicker then Kobayashi?
oh well, he got paid. am sure that was the goal.
enjoyed Toney's post fight interview, other then the fact I couldn't understand a word of it.

I honestly dont even know what happened but saw them doing that big time prior...White probally instructed Toney to wear that "heavyweight champion" robe for the camera at weigh in laughing all the way to the bank.

Re: James Toney v Randy Couture
A few days from now, Dana White is going to announce that this UFC ppv did 1.5 million buys or something like that, even though they are a private company and have yet to release those kind of records to validate their claims like HBO which is public and is mandated by the SEC.
