Can you think of any “one-of-a-kind” boxers or boxing characters?
I think Randall "Tex' Cobb fits this bill. He was a lot brighter than people gave him credit for; he received a BA with Honors from Temple University (no mean trick); he was a good all-around athlete; he finished his boxing career with a fine record of 43-7-1 (though his final long undefeated streak was against dreadful opposition); he became a solid character actor; and finally, he is well is known for his many amusing quotes three of which follow:
During the referee's instructions prior to his bout with Shavers, the ref asked the customary Any questions? Cobb replied Can I bite him?
They called me a fat, cowardly, cocaine-snorting, fight-fixing cheat, Who they calling fat!--Cobb
When asked about how he [Cobb] was going to fight Holmes by Howard Cosell Well Howie, I think I'm going to stay outside and outjab him
Yes, I submit Tex Cobb is a “one in a million.” Can you name any others?

Re: Can you think of any “one-of-a-kind” boxers or boxing characters?
Ha ha ha...I just mentioned Ole Tex in another thread about 2 days ago...They were talking about fighters in MMA or kick boxing and transition how just because you are successful in one does not guarantee it in the other...I mentioned Tex and his Kick boxing days...He held one hell of a record something like 80-5 with 70 ko's.....
Emmanuel Augustus has to fit the bill and a one of a kind character and boxer...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfiBGw0TG0A
There will never be another Drunken Master...I mean in truth the guy was amazing...a little more disapline and a little less showboating and he would have been a whole lot more....
Of course there will never be another Mike Tyson....

Re: Can you think of any “one-of-a-kind” boxers or boxing characters?
Bingo! I was going to use Augustus as well. You got it dead center!

Re: Can you think of any “one-of-a-kind” boxers or boxing characters?
Too obvious but Muhammad Ali, the real greatest.

His style (personality) isn't all that "one-of-a-kind" anymore, everyone talks shit these days, everyone says they are the best these days....it's played out.
Randy Cobb was the first person I thought of, but since he was the first guy mentioned I'll do my best to come up with someone else.
Roberto Duran???

Re: Can you think of any “one-of-a-kind” boxers or boxing characters?
It's along the Ali lines again, but Naz Hamed was one of a kind. He took cockyness and arogance to a whole new level.
From flipping into the ring, to fighting with his gloves behind his back for almost the entire fight.
It's all been done since and even before. But he was the best at cockyness.

Mayorga is the man.
Another one would be Arturo Gatti.
He used to say "Guys like me don't come around too often."
And he was right.

Re: Can you think of any “one-of-a-kind” boxers or boxing characters?
George Foreman as a commentator, the guy was happy like 98% of the time and some of the stuff he said and his expression afterwards was alway ;D
another one would have to be Teddy Atlas, no real explanation needed here

But then Micky Ward came around. And Danny Lopez and Saad were Gatti before Gatti,

Re: Can you think of any “one-of-a-kind” boxers or boxing characters?
Maybe a Johnny Tapia. The bad stands out but have rarely seen a guy with that level of intensity in the ring.....what about a Vinny Paz.Sometimes he landed as many punches on himself as opponent....except Aaron Davis :fight:

Re: Can you think of any “one-of-a-kind” boxers or boxing characters?
Jack Johnson first black Champion.
Harry Greb for not training but going flat out out all of the time.
(John Kelly) The first person to use the false fighting name of Jack Dempsey 1862 from Kildare Ireland later to choose the name and fight in New York only lost two fights from 1884 to 1895 the first by a spinning back fist that was then banned from the ring. (he wasnt the same after the loss).
For different reasons than usual, like an old style fighting gentleman; Kostya Tszyu.
Marciarno for being undefeated 49 fights 43 inside the distance, without picking and choosing his way through or ducking someone in their prime as the others with clean records have.
Joe Louis for putting black fighters on the map and bringing the nation together when under war by beating Max Schmelling (who himself was a great one of a kind man and great fighter who was just caught up on the wrong end of politics.
So: Max Schmelling for coming to Joe Louis aid in later years after being humiliated by the general public at home in Germany and abroad after his defeat by Joe around all the Nazi propaganda etc. What a great man to come to his old adversary's aid in later years.

Used to love watching Paez fight as a kid.
I seem to remember one fight when he was throwing condoms into the crow on the way to the ring.
MAD!

Re: Can you think of any “one-of-a-kind” boxers or boxing characters?
Soon as I read the title to this thread I thought of Naz Hammed.
For a while he must have been Britains most talked about sporst man.
Watch this video if you have forgoton why he was so unique.
