Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
I think one of the worst stoppages to come from a referee being a little to quick to stop proceedings in a fight would have to be when Ray Mercer clipped Tommy Morrison on the chin and he slipped and the ref stepped in too quickly. The ref didn't give the Duke a chance....I reckon that fight was fixed because just before that point Morrison was coasting to glorious win.....but yet again the ref had to spoil the party.
Job Biscuit (That for me was blatant early stoppage I have ever witnessed...shame cause it ruined a good career)!!
eh eh!!

Sprott's win over Harrison. Harrison was just about to get up...according to the man himself.

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
Calzaghe v Peter Manfredo Jr. Not that it would have changed the outcome, just that I thought the ref came in to early. Felt for Manfredo, it was a big night for him.

Agreed. The referee had a 'mare. Did feel for Manfredo that night.

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
Ruddock v Lewis I always springs to mind when they talk about early stoppages - Ruddock had received a fair punch yes but Steele I think it was stopped it within two seconds of the ounch landing with Ruddock still upright (am pretty sure he wasn'even lying on ropes).
I also thought Lewis v McCall I was a premature stoppage. Lewis was hurt very badly yes but should have been given chance to continue I thought.

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
Also Julian Jackson v Herol Graham.
If you watch a replay referee waves fight off at count at 2 - like hello ??? Last I heard a fighter on the canvas should be given a full ten second count. Herol had a full 7 seconds to recover and was clearly not given the chance.

You're just pulling our leg right? I have to admit when I first read this I thought this guy is delusional. But I'm pretty sure you're not that delusional to call like 10 unanswered shots an early stoppage. And I'm even more sure you're being hilarious when you see Morrison being violently knocked against the ropes then to the canvas for more than a 10 count. But you are right the ref sucked because Morrison could've gotten killed due to the ref not stopping this when Morrison went limp against the ropes and then was hit several more times without being able to defend himself. This was a truly scary KO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp9BX2MtQUE I get your humor though. Jokes on us;)

Agreed a truly brutal KO one of the more scary ones in boxing history where someone did not get permenatly hurt...I wasa truly surprised Morrison did not have not nonly his career over in that fight but most of his normal life....
As for early stoppages Richard Steele had become famous for them by the year 2000

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
Ruiz Tua
The ref stopped that fight early when Ruiz was dropped like a sack of rocks.

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
Vincent Pettway "ko"ing Simon Brown was clearly premature...I mean Brown was still punching back for crying out loud :-X

While the stoppage was atrocious (possibly the worst I have ever seen), I think the ref was well aware of the colossal mismatch taking place and was seriously concerned about Manfredo getting hurt.

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
I dont think the fight was stopped to early but the referee for Hamed Alicea didnt give Alicea a chance to get up, he pinned him tothe canvass with the count at 2 I think.

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
I felt Andy Lee's fight against Vera was stopped too early, particularly since Lee landed the last two blows.

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
hatton-pacquiao

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
Jim McDonald was also being held down when Azumah nelson had knocked him down in the last round. Sure he would have got up.

Given your nickname, kudos for being able to poke fun and laugh about what must've been a shattering experience.

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
It's not easy being a ref, especially when it's time to stop a fight. You're always going to be second-guessed. Some will think it was too soon... others will think it was too late... and a few will think it was just right.
One of the best jobs at this, IMO, was the classic Corrales-Castillo I. The ref could've easily stopped it after Corrales went down a second time. But he didn't, and then came Corrales now famous comeback. When he finally DID stop it, the Castillo fans felt cheated. But he did the right thing. Castillo didn't go down, but he was against the ropes and his hands had dropped to his sides. He was defenseless.
Like I said, it's not easy being a boxing ref.

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
Most refs would have stopped the ward v gatti fight after that body shot but in a way i am glad he did not, it made the fight more legendary.

I think it was a little early, but come on. Peter was on the ropes getting hit with a barrage of shots and not throwing anything back. That's just asking for a stoppage.
That fight shouldn't have been made in the first place though. Manfredo wasn't in the same league.

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
I thought Tyson -v- Ruddock 1 was stopped too early.
OK, Ruddock was never going to win, but when it was stopped, he wasn't out on his feet & had actually been relatively competitive up to that point.

That was Richard Steel who was criticised for stopping the Chavez v Taylor fight too. Remember the Ring headline “Did Richard Steal my fight” (or something like that).

Re: Fights getting Stopped to Early by the referee
In this Country Referee's may stop fight's to soon, the bigger picture is stopping injury or even death,
I for one like the guy get out of the ring with his brain in working order.
Boxing is a hard game some of the best fight's, I have seen over the many year's people have been hurt
some very bad, I have no problem when a fight has been stopped sooner than later, you no when somebody has taken a drubbing. Remember being carried out of the Ring some one,s Son Father or Brother
yes blood and snot but I don't want anybody to be a cabbage.!
