Dirrell withdraws from Ward fight, might be out of Super 6
According to Steve Kim on his twitter
"Andre Dirrell has withdrawn from the Super 6 with an 'injury' according to Ken Hershman. Ward will fight on Nov 27th vs TBA"
Injury??
Or can he not face fighting his best mate, what a fucking joke this, should of just been stright knockout this event.

Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
I think Saddo's prediction of Robin Reid winning this might come true. ;D
-
Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
that's why a better idea for a tournament should be something like an eight man, single elimination tournament. something like college basketball's "elite eight". that would be better. you'd get the top eight fighters from any given division and draw names on whom fights whom instead of ranking the fighters from 1 through 8.

Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
Should have been single elimination from jump. No points bs for ko,dec...you lose your done. Quick,concise.....oh and one huge thing obviously missing going into this......thought out! You ever see those Christmas trees that were nice but they went and threw a bunch of gawdy, tacky shit on it..this is it.

Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
This is a real shame for Showtime. They were very brave in trying to bring something good and new to boxing, and we did have some great fights.
I guess they will learn from this though and next time not bother with a pointless 3 fight round 1 which goes on for two years and eliminates only 2 fighters.
8 fighters knockout would have been more sustainable.
But don't be too quick to knock it, at least they took a chance and tried to create something exciting.
And it did bring some clarity to the division. We know that Andre Ward is a force now. Maybe Abraham and Froch can fight each other and Ward fights Bute, with the winners facing off? That would be a great conclusion.

Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
Have to ask....did Direll complain of chest pains prior ???
-
Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
Very disappointing. This tourny was such a great great idea and these prissy boxers i agree have fucked it all up. Between everyone crying about every outcome of every fight to froch crying about pulling out to direll actually pulling out. Kesslers eye.....man they just don't make those rock hard guys anymore like they used to. I'm sure i'm not the only one that never said it aloud but really never thought these two would fight. Props to froch and abraham for sticking with it. I respect them both a whole lot more. Ward as well, but i do belive he should have had to fight on the road like the rest of the guys. This sport is frustrating. This is boxing....so why do we see so little of it from these top guys. Thank god for football.......

Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
wow. that sucks for the tournament.
i think i'm the only person here that liked the idea of having a tournament where one loss doesn't eliminate you. i guess that at the end of the day, it is too difficult to pull off. its a bummer, i wonder if the froch/abraham fight will go on as planned.
-
Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
on another note, showtime could just have ward, froch and abraham continue regardless and have the winner of the green/johnson fight be the last spot for the semi-finals although i don't really see the point of another green/ward fight.
does anyone know what the injury was? duck job?
-
Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
Yes just make it straight knock out. I got a feeling these two are friends and do not want to fight.
-
Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
This is a shame, I was looking forward to this fight and thought Dirrell had a great chance of winning it. Hopefully this won't impact the Froch-Abraham fight, and I give those 2 and Ward credit for at least fighting 3 fights in the tourney. It was a great idea, but with all the posturing and fighter withdrawals its unfortunately turned into a joke

They are saying it's neurological problems, from the Abraham fight. Here is the article

Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
So this means Green is in the Semi-Finals! Hell yeah!
I give Showtime credit for trying, and we did get some memorable fights out of it. (Be it for the right or wrong reasons).
Looking forward a simple 4 man tournament would have been the way to go, 2 rounds and done. An 8 man tourney would take too long as well IMO a tourney like this should be no longer than a year long for christ's sakes.

How would it? 8 man knock out event would be 7 fights, we would just of been waiting for the final coming round now instead we are still waiting for the third stage of the super 6 then the semis and the final.
Johnson/Green has been signed for November the 6th so Green is not threw to the semi-final. Showtime are saying Ward might fight someone outside the Super Six on the 26th November and then it will be basically a shoot out between Green and Johnson to make the semi's.

Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
Lawson said that Dirrell's symptoms of "headaches and dizziness" began shortly after his March fight against Arthur Abraham in Group Stage 2 of the modified round-robin tournament.
"We took him to a doctor and then a neurologist. When we took him to the neurologist, he was alarmed. He said Andre wasn't fit to fight right now. Before he would even consider letting him fight, he would need three months symptom-free. It would get to the point where Andre would have to sit down. He couldn't lay down because [the symptoms] would get worse."
Hmm not saying this isn't true, but to just now come public with it, 6 months later??? I think he just doesn't want to get in the ring with ward and yes the tournament has pretty much fallen apart. I mean half the original field is out, and before it's all said and done who's to say another fighter won't go down to injury. Should have been a 8 man tourney 4 fights the first night, 2 fights 3 months later and then a final a month later, wrap it all up in less than a year. Kind of losing interest in it, and now ward is probably going to have some meaningless non tourney fight against some less than stellar competition while froch and abraham destroy each other...
-
Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
Well at first this sounds so disappointing but if a brain doctor is saying that he's not fit, then I think we should all take this seriously. If they are saying his entire career is in peril, that isn't something like a back injury which maybe fighters have faked in the past. I don't know, wait before we judge. Imagine for a minute that he wasn't faking against Abraham and that spasming and no memory thing was real, this could be bad.

Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
Even if the Super 8 (and counting...) doesn't come to completion, look at the division rankings before the tournament and after. They're completely different, it gave us at least 5 matchups of top 10 super middleweights facing each other. That's pretty cool.

Andre Dirrell out of Super Six as career in jeopardy - ESPN
It looks like Dirrell will have to retire because of the Abraham punch? That's what the article made it sound like. Damn, and look how many people thought he was faking it.
I completely agree. People are hating on the Super Six. That's dumb. It's commendable of Showtime to have made the effort. They were able to get multiple promoters with different agendas to come to the table and create a tournament pitting the best 6 super middleweights against each other. I wish HBO were as adventurous.

I don't know all the details so I might be outta line when I say this but.......Yo do u smell something.........Yo I definitely smell something. I smell..I smell.. I smell pu$$y! LOL

Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
i think the last good tournement was the HBO heavyweight unification tournament with tyson tucker douglas & a few other heavys?
-
Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
Ok, so from what I see everyone pretty much agrees that the Super Six wasn't so super after all.
My suggestions for it's rechristening would be:-
Substitute Six, Six on the Beach, Stumbling Six, Shabby Six.
Any improvement on those?
And in terms of the layout of the tournament, to expect a league system as was put in place to go without injuries, withdrawals etc was just naive, but with so many subs it just seems a little empty.
-
Re: Super Six has turned into a complete fucking joke Dirrell withdraws with Injury!!
I really doubt Dirrell is 'ducking' Ward or afraid to fight. He's a prize-fighter, he's not going to give up a massive payday because he's suddenly become afraid. This speculation about him being a coward is pretty ridiculous IMO.
-
Re: Dirrell withdraws from Ward fight, might be out of Super 6
Oh I wasn't saying he's scarred of getting in there with ward, after all I'm pretty sure abraham punches harder than ward. I was just thinking its kind of fishy to wait 6 months basically to come public with this, I think it's more due to the fact that ward and dirrell are basically buds and don't want to get in the ring with each other. On the other hand tho this might be completely legit, but I hope not because that would be horrible especially for something that shouldn't have happened in the first place.

No one in their right mind would cost themselves millions of dollar and put their career in jeopardy just because they didn't want to fight a friend. They're prize-fighters, it's their job, and while I suspect they may have had a shit fight (as friends have in the past), I have no doubt that Dirrell's neurological issues are legitimate.
-
Re: Dirrell withdraws from Ward fight, might be out of Super 6
I guess we'll only see with time, at this point I'm certainly hoping he just doesn't want the fight cause they're buds. Having your career ended and having permanent damage due to a rabbit punch would be as bad as it gets in boxing.
-
Re: Dirrell withdraws from Ward fight, might be out of Super 6
They're friends but Dirrell fought Berto in the amateurs multiple times and those two are much closer friends. I don't know, different in the pros obviously but I don't think you let friendship come between you at this level and I doubt that's the case.

Apparently he's been having some neurological problems since the Abraham fight. Could end his career. Which is sad if it's true.
-
Re: Dirrell withdraws from Ward fight, might be out of Super 6
Its bullshiit. The artical doesnt say his career is over, it says the doctor wont be happy until he sees 3 months of clear no symptoms from Dirrell. Doesnt that tie in well with having the others fight and then coming back in to it?
I think a proper round robin or league would be a good idea. Get, say, at least 4 of the top in the weight and have them fight each other every 3 or 4 months and get the fights on the same night and show, run it over a year. It would be massive, plenty of recovery time and deffinitly get to see the top in the division.

Re: Dirrell withdraws from Ward fight, might be out of Super 6
Dirrel has ruined the super 6
first his performance against froch
then his girl behaviour against AA
now this
he should have his licence revoked
this competition was suppose to revolutionise boxing and dirrell completely balls it up

exactly eric mate, the bloke in a whole has done himself not a single favour all tournament.
My only memories of andre dirrell are him flumoxed on the canvas against froch all evening and pretending like a bitch that he was more hurt than he actually was against abraham

We are talking about a 8 man knock event, well that is the general consensus on here meaning.
Round one four fight quater finals.
Round two two fight semi finals
Round three the final.
Meaing this event we would be waiting for the winner in the next few weeks, that would of been ideal.

Re: Dirrell withdraws from Ward fight, might be out of Super 6
starting with 6 would be alright then the best loser would have another chance in the semis
funnily enough the semis would have been ward froch abraham and dirrell
although dirrell should really be band from boxing
