B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
Hopkins: "When Will Pacquiao Face a Top Black Fighter?" - Boxing News
The article is about how Hopkins says that Pac don't fight top black fighters, as in African Americans with that slick style. You know like the Ray Leonard style that B-Hop was talking about.
BTW, just in case someone brings up Lebwaba and Clottey, they aren't african americans. And I think when B-Hop is talking about a top black fighter, he means black american.
-
Well Bernard just who the fuck has he been trying to fight?
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
"I would never let a white boy beat me".
Why is color so big deal with him?
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
Well onces that black boxer Floyd grows some balls and quit stalling, Pac would get to fight a black boxer. It would be a win over the best black boxer around.
It really aint about race or color, Pac is just a Beast. You can hit him but he too will hit you and it comes in combos.
How can you be slick and elusive against a fast combo artist like pac. You got 12 rounds to try and survive but it will be hell. Floyd knows this.

Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
Last time I checked Manny has been trying to fight the top "Black Boxer" for 2 years now.
It's funny how the longer these guys like Hopkins stick around the more you turn against them. I use to be a huge BHop fan but he just needs to disappear sooner rather than later. I hope to God Pascal kicks his freckin" butt next month.

...And he will.
-
Wasn't Clottley Nigerian? Or similar.
That makes him more black than an African American surely?
Racist bullshit that I'm sure we'll hear more of from Floyd soon.
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
Why's he so hung up on colour? Does it matter what colour skin a boxers is? I agree with jdonaher1, the longer these old guys stay around the more I dislike them. I had loads of respect for B-Hop (still do as a boxer) but why does he need to open his mouth? He just sets himself up to be shot down.
-
This is Bhop stupidly discussing race, when he should instead be saying that Pacquiao hasnt beaten a topnotch fast defensive fighter, many of whom have happened to be black
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
BHop's lack of vocabulary and intelligence just means he's wondering when will pacman face a slick boxer, seeing as how they kept him away from Zahir Raheem after Raheem clearly schooled Morrales. They chose to face the obviously faded and done Morrales.
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
B-Hop is a prick, plain and simple! The whole "never get beaten by a white guy" things just proves it.
The reason Pac hasn't fought many black Americans is basically down to size. The lower weight classes are mostly made up of Latinos and Asians, simple as.
Not to mention the very man he's trying to fight is the definitive black boxer of the modern era!

WOW! What a really good point.
How about whenever Floyd Mayweather signs and step into the ring with him.
So elaborate on this Black American who has "Ray Leonard style". Clottey don't count because he doesn't have Black American style and he's not African American? And the black American styles are like Floyd Mayweather, Zab Judah or Shane Mosley; Whatever the hell that means?
A Boxer style is not 'race' based. It is relative to the individual's experience and development as a boxer. Example: Muhammad Ali and George Forman are both Black but have completely different styles and both were top Black American fighters.
BTW: If Clottey is already an American citizen he is an "African-American" Black American's born in the US have roots that come from many different Nations and not just the African content.
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
You aren't a color or a country or anything but a boxer when you step in the ring at that high of a level.
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
B-Hop is crazy and shouldn't have brought race into the ring. But what people don't realize, B-Hop is a business man. Although Shane is not under the GBP tent, B-Hop might still be invested. And I believe B-Hop gets a check if Manny fights Floyd just because Floyd will be co-promoter by GBP.
Also, don't think that it isn't beyond Floyd to make a phone call to B-Hop to help get under Pacman's skin and to sell even more tickets.
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
B Hop. All time great now just a daft racist.

Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
It's a good job Bernard Hopkins keeps reminding us he was black, I'm sure most of us would've forgotten.
Dunno if anyone in the states saw this, from a couple of years back.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwzjtJu9wA4
Never stops using the race card and there is absolutely no need to. It's very weird.
Hope Pascal sends him into retirement.

Oh that bastard in the vid deserves nothing less than that from Hopkins...the only way that video makes me happy is if the thing ends up engulfed in flames with the two of them stuck inside it

Teddy Atlas or Larry Merchant have NOTHING on that dude, he's a lickspittle for every pontential prospect out of England (deserving and undeserving) and he'll just talk utter crap about anyone from outside the UK. I have not seen ANYONE more biased in all of boxing than that dude....he's horrible

Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
Fair play to Hopkins. He says it how it is. Obviously has an issue with colour but the guy is an old school legend and you cant help but respect what he's done. Mid 40s and still nobody can beat him up.
He makes a good point about Manny not fighting blacks but to me it looks as is Floyd isnt too keen on fighting him either. Theres only really Shane left. Other than that theres nobody who brings the big name or money like the Mexicans. FTR I think Manny kicks Mosleys ass if they fought now. Different story afew years ago but Shane is touching 40 and he was gassed after 2 rounds with Floyd. Mayweather doesnt even fight at a high pace like Manny or hit as furiously
If they made the fight it would be one to look forward to and the 24/7's would be great but strip away the hype and youve got an old man in Mosley against a prime fighter who doesnt get tired. He would hit Shane all night and find it hard to miss. Mosley doesnt knoe how to run and would get a battering. He'd be lucky if he got through 12. I think Pac blows Berto away too. The only guys I think can beat him are Floyd and Williams. They wont let him near Paul and Floyd has made it clear he doesnt want to risk his zero.

1. He exaggerates quite a bit....I mean color commentators are there for their insight and views on their sport, but I might point to the time where he said "Wladimir has been knocked down like 4 times in his last 4 fights" or the time where he said "Manchester is the fight capital of the world...in Las Vegas all the boxing gyms have closed"...and people are free take those for fact as he puts them out there
2. This dude drools over all the British heavyweights (WBA title holder, Harrison [at one time], Price, Olubamiwo, Fury, etc) and that's just the heavyweights. There's nothing wrong supporting your fellow countrymen but it is nice to show SOME restraint in that and try to be a little bit objective at times. Be realistic just a little bit. Ricky Hatton would never have lost to anyone if this guy had his say. An example of his biased nature "Calzaghe had a similar issue to Witter (who was trying to fight Hatton) when he wanted to fight the bigger named fighters in America...they kept moving the goal posts on him 'I want $1 million' then 'I want $5 million' " .....I believe the true point of contention in those deals was fighting in the US vs the UK. He also slates American trainers saying they are "mercenaries" and "cost too much"
3. He only gives praise to foreign fighters when it benefits his agenda of hyping up British fighters.
I'd compare him to Jim Rome, he's brash, he's subborn, he is a very colorful guy no doubt, and he presents his views very well, but I just don't see things his way.....and he annoys me, his attitude annoys me along with his viewpoint. He's good at bringing guys hype though I will say that, he hypes the hell out of some fighters and part of me wishes some American commentators could do as good of a job as he does with the hype part of it.

Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
here are a few "black" fighters who could possibly be matched up with pacquiao:
jr. welterweight - timothy bradley and devon alexander. both are fast and good. i don't think alexander can beat pacquiao but bradley would have more of a better chance.
welterweight - floyd jr. and andre berto - floyd jr. would i think beat pacquiao by close decision. berto posses a threat because of his power punches. i still think pacquiao beats berto by TKO.
jr. middleweight - paul williams and cornelius bundrage. williams is a freak of nature and at this weight, i cannot see how pacquiao can beat him. williams by late TKO. bundrage is a very physical animal and would be very dangerous for pacquiao because of his strength. still i think pacquiao might get past him.
one thing in common these guys have is that they are all in their physical primes. it would be very interesting if pacquiao can be as dominant with any of these prime fighters.
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
I think Paul Williams is like Margarito he's too easy to hit AND we've seen his chin does have some give in it. Andre Berto would get stomped out by Manny, he couldn't hang with him. Other than Floyd I give Bradley a shot over anyone else. Zab Judah in his prime had the skills to give anyone trouble, but I think it's a bridge too far for him now.
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
I like BHop. I respect the guy for what he has accomplished in life, what he was still able to make out of it despite the early trials.
The few times he's found out of sort, are in situations where his sheer passion in keeping, preserving his accomplishments, and the respect just due, he'd gone astray and clutched on straws using inferior reasoning. Probably this ill-on-comfort "defensive stance" is an offshoot of his period of incarceration, it is anybody's guess. Lack of good judgment, who knows.
This recent one though, is of a different flair. It is not that crazy defensive posturing variety. I'd just as soon store this as hype.
There it is, hype. In putting forth an effort to keep his associate, PBF, in the mold of things while he tidies up all things needed mending, Hopkins came up with this lame skit...
It's a shame that people with the stature of a Bernard Hopkins need to go this route, stick their necks, just to buy Floyd Jr. time before he inks his John Hancock on the dotted lines... If it ever so happens. (IMHO)

Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
This is HOPKINS we're talking about. Is anyone surprised at anything he says?
No he hasn't ruined his legacy.
No he isn't a bum.
No suddenly his fights aren't worthless and he isn;t an all time great anymore.
Come on people, this is Hopkins, if this gets under your skin when HE says it, people must have a really bad memory. Hopkins has said so many things over the years I just chalk up anything ridiculous as "That's Hopkins!" and then i play the woody woodpecker theme in my head and go on about my day. Is anyone really surprised?

Hopkins disses everyone, white, latino, aliens(cause he loves conspiracies) I've gotten to the point im not shocked by anything he says. He is in the management business with the most famous latino boxer of all time so I take everything he says with a grain of salt.

Yeah genius...how can you be slick and elusive and survive Pac...wait a minute...Marquez did it twice. Stop being a nuthugger. It's easy to give "hell" to fighters that are slow and walk into your punches. Don't jump off a bridge when Floyd does what Marquez did except 100 times more effectively.

JMM wasn't slick or elusive, he counter punched his way throughout 12 rounds. What the fuck are you talking about?
Floyd wont even get in the ring with pac cause he knows he aint going to be 100 times more effective against pac.

Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
If Hopkins wasn't an ATG boxer, he'd be just another loudmouth, racist jerk. So basically, he's just a loudmouth, racist ATG boxer. It should surprise no one that Hopkins says things like this. It's ALL about race with him. He reminds me of old Larry Holmes, except that I don't dislike Hopkins as much as I TRULY DISLIKE Holmes. But what else to expect from Hopkins? He's a street dude... self-made... has done his time... shoots from the hip, pays little or no attention to how people might think or feel. Well, actually it's about race and MONEY. He's always quick to point out that boxing is a business, which in itself isn't so bad except that you sort of wish that fighters would at least PRETEND to care about the sport itself. Once in awhile Hopkins crude candor can be refreshing, but most of the time it comes across all wrong, which is why many people dislike the guy.
-
Re: B. Hopkins: When will Pacquiao fight a Black fighter?
Whoever is that slick boxer is, he must throw a good volume of punches too because you can't simply beat manny by picking him apart and throwing very little punches. Doesn't matter if you're black or white, you must throw a good volume of punches against manny because manny is a hell busy fighter and not just simply a busy fighter, realize by now that manny isn't just fast and strong he is actually "accurately fast".
In recent years, manny had slowed down and sees the game even more slowed and that's because he had favored to be more accurate rather than be ridiculously super fast but wastes punches as he plowed in. His mastery of angles is also a problem itself even to those so called slick fighters. in fact, angling is a more rare style than slicks are.
My opinion is the best fighter than can beat manny is still a marquez type of a fighter. A counter puncher who also throws a good volume of punches. But one can argue, that the manny pacquiao version that marquez had fought to a draw and a controversial loss has long been gone and instinct, the new one is more versatile and a lot more tricky with his mastery of right hook, left cross, in and out plus heavy side to side movements and angles. This version is even more problematic to face with than ever before.

EXACTLY. I would answer Bhop with..... when there's a black fighter with a title at the relevant weight that will fight him.
And when he fought at 140, Bradley wasn't champ. Alexander wasn't. Only "black" fighter that was available and had a name was Shane.
