Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
Don't see a thread on it but sure many of you caught it on yahoo...
Five best chins in boxing - Boxing - Yahoo! Sports
They have
#5-Vitali Klitschko
#4- James Toney
#3- Antonio Margarito
#2 Shane Mosley
#1- David Tua.....
Just falling short was Glen Johnson, Tomaz Adamek and Librado Andrade....
Thoughts? Opinions? Anyone you would like to add or take off the list?...I thought it was a fairly good list though a case could be made for
Hopkins, DLH ( A weight drained DLH, and under sized DLH had been stopped but when you look at his list of opp it is amazing he was only stopped in those 2 instances)...Winky Wright...

Chuvalo, Holyfield, Foreman, Morales, are a couple of others

Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
Oliver McCall, Wayne McCullogh, Gatti and Ward. Is it only guys that are currently fighting?

Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
Always love these. Getting dropped and staying on the mat are different things. Chin durability should be just going down, getting buzzed in the first place...far more factors can come in when a guy gets "ko'd".
Ray "I actually took a knee vs Holyfield" Mercer. Head of granite.
Chavez senior. Dropped vs Randall...wobbled in 2nd fight but what else for a guy who put himself in the fire?
Juan Laporte was walking titanium. Head was g.o.a.t
Not so sure about Toney. Good head yeh but his defense was sensational. Was buzzed vs Littles, McCallum, Jones jr. Peter dropped him but suppose thats nit picking. Oscar likewise. Got dropped early on, Ike, and belly caved vs Hopkins. Both sturdy no doubt.
Adamek is a tuff SOB but has been shaken and stirred on occasion himself. Banks, Cunningham and an AARP collecting Grant. Fatigue a factor but rocked is rocked.
Just noticed it indicated 'our era' aww well ;D Angulo? Williams ? Joseph Agbeko? Shite I may hate myself for this but Rocky Juarez :-X

agree with you, hell i'd say even Malignaggi's name can be thrown in there, when has he seriously been hurt and dropped hard? i mean yea Cotto, Hatton, and Khan rattled him, but the guy can take crazy amounts of punishment

Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
If Chuvalo counts, I'm gonna throw Matthew Saad Mohammed out there.
-
Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
I think you should count guys thet get buzzed and drop but get back up, or is that considered fortitude? Sometimes you just get hit where you can do nothing but drop, its when your down with your brain scrambled and get back up and survive the round. Thats something alot of fightyers dont have.

Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
I'm going to have to add JMM. Dropped 4 times by Pac, dropped by Mayweather, dropped by Katsidis. Amazingly he never seems fazed after getting dropped. He's been in plenty of other wars too where he probably should have been dropped.

Good call, he gets dropped but is always back up and adjusts very well.
I also go with Toney, he was such a small heavyweight. Well, I mean small in terms of height and reach, the belly kind of got out there towards the end. But he could eat a punch, Peter only put him down because Toney got so fat he didn't know how to balance himself on two legs anymore.

I'm going to throw Joe Calzaghe in there. Been down plenty, but his recovery powers are insane. I've never really seen him in trouble and i've seen him take some pretty heavy bombs. That uppercut from Jones was lethal.

Yeah I know. But he can really take a hell of a dig all the same.

Yes Calzaghe could take a punch and recover very fast from one and fire back.

Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
I always thought De la Hoya had a very good chin.
Sugar Shane has a great beard.
Bernard Hopkins has been down on a few occasions but never in serious danger.
Antonio Margarito is an obvious one.

You must be joking, he had one of the best Heavyweight jabs of the modern era. Infact he outjabbed Lennox Lewis, so he must of been able to box a bit.

No it was just our era...Retired or not,,,,From the way you look at the list seems like they only went back to the mid 90's....If it was an all time list there would be many different names on it....Lite ETM stated in his post about Chuvalo...If it was an all time list I don't think I personally could truly make one of just 5 guys...McCall is a good one for sure in truth he has never been stopped his only stoppage loss on record came due to his mental breakdown in the ring against Lennox and it was stopped because he would not fight not due to a beating so yeah McCall is a good name

You know I thought of Joe as one of the guys who just came shy but because he had been knocked down so many times I thought maybe it was not the best choice...I mean Joe always got back up and I don't think I ever rememeberr him hurt badly

Yeah Ray was under rated for sure...I think Ray was more a victim of being the WBO champion taking it seriously when the belt was not too favored on and he did give Lennox a hell of a time and Lennox was a master boxer....

Walking a fine line on some no? Though with a list like this it is hard to put guys on who have been down but gotten back up to fight on several occassions when there are guys out there who have never been down like Vitali who has never been down or guys like Shane who has only been down once and these guys have been fighting at the elite level for so long still managing to stay down.....I do though personally try to think at what point the knockdowns happened...Toney at HW against a monstor puncher like Peter when Toney was not a treu HW just a fat ass I really don't hold it against him....The body shots like the one DLH suffered I don't hold against him because I don't care how good your chin is you get a liver shot clean on and you are going down.....I love how you updated Williams from your list ha ha

Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
I don't think you can really count guys with great recovery powers or big hearts etc as would be the case with JMM and Calzaghe. Sure they have/had very good chins, but more so elite boxing skills which make it very hard to land(or follow up with) the type of shots that truly finish guys off, at least with any consistensy. Mayorga absolutely had one of the best chins of our era for the lower weights, the problem is that he relied on it and it got dented. If Calzaghe or Marquez fought like Mayorga did for a while no doubt they would have easily been knocked out, as is the case with the vast majority of fighters of any calibre. Watch him fight Vernon Forrest again, or Trinidad(both VERY capable of knocking guys cold). I can't really think of any other fighter who could actually use their chin as a weapon like that with any success. Mosley is about as freakishly tough as they come as well. Only Forrest ever actually hurt him and I suspect the headbutt is what actually did it for the most part. I can't really argue with the list other than adding Mayorga I guess.

Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
Marcus Villasana (spelling) took bombs from Hodgkinson and just kept coming.

Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
Shane Mosley, look at the shots he took off Mayweather which wobbled him, and I'm sure would have dropped damn near anyone. Even though he was wobbled badly a few times his chin had enough to take particularly as he got caught clean so many times.
James Toney, although part of this with him was his defensive ability to roll off the shot, which I think takes a lot of the credit.
Andrade, Margarito & Mayorga. All three of these guys are arguably the most impressive as they never roll off the shot they walk onto it and keep walking. That to me is the epitome of a great chin.
I also think that if people are throwing JMM & Calzaghe out there, then you've got to say Pacquiao & Mayweather. I think Manny has an extremely underrated chin, especially when you look at how he stayed up from some of the shots he took from JMM, while Mayweather has never really been dropped, as the Hernandez KD wasn't a KD, while the Judah one which should have counted wasn't really a drop. I think a lot of that is defensive ability, but when he's taken big shots he's always come back pretty quickly. Also Manny has taken hard shots off some serious guys & not looked like dropping.
Abraham has a pretty good chin when you look at some of the shots he took off Miranda & Froch.
For me in a lot of ways the best has to be Glen Johnson. Very rarely seriously hurt, but he probably edges it for me in totality, because he's never been down, I've seen him take big shots, recover & come back or sometimes act like nothing has happened. He does all of this largely on the front foot which impresses me that bit more.

Mercer out jabbed Holyfield as well but he definitely did not avoid punches and relied on his chin too much as a defence. ;)

Never been stopped Marquez and Mayweather.

What about tree stump John Brown? Tenacious as they come, think his chins finally been cracked though, still fighting?

Ray did what a lot of guys with tough chins and a good punch do they believe in it too much...Then what happens is after they are stopped once they seem to not be able to handle the abuse too much

Think it was his conditioning to. Best he boxed was Holyfield and Lewis but sometimes his own worst enemy. Just rewatched that scrap with Cooper last week, great fight!
He's done now but Lacy ? Thick headed.
-
Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
Bert Cooper...There is a name I have not heard in a while...That was a hell of a scrap....Speaking of conditioning...Cooper was a giuy who could have done something if he coulkd stay off the drugs and shit...He was a decent HW who allowed himself to be a bum

Totally. At cruiser he was a beast and even in shape hvy. Always overlooked was his tricky cross armed defense at times, rare. Had a way of "L" ing his arms and whipping hooks off quick. Always liked him, just a character but pulled some rank stuff in ring too, quit in a few. Always gets dogged for quit vs Foreman but that body shot was absolutley brutal! Last I heard he was starting 'comeback' ??? Prior to that he was mugged badly by a couple of guys with ball bats!
-
Re: Best chins of our era thoughts on the list?
Bert dressed like Tyson in the ring and fought like Frazier, think that was his manager at one stage but gave up on him because of his bad habits.

Really? I did not hear about that....Yesw the shot from George was brutal people forget that even a second go around of Foreman was a brutal brutal puncher....The man could just paralyze a guy when he caught them flush.....I hope he does not comeback I mean it would be a shame to see him used as a punching bag

Remember Dwight Qawi taking Foremans punches until the body punching started.
