Marquez vs. Morales deal reached for April 9th, WBC Diamond Belt at stake as well
Erik Morales: Marquez on Board For April 9, Diamond Belt - Boxing News
I'm sure this will disappoint everyone as there was an overwhelming outcry for many people on this board that this fight shouldn't be happening now. Unfortunately, tis on. I'll still watch because as a fight, it'll probably be entertaining while it lasts. For Marquez, this isn't the way to lure Pacquiao though.
At least the super duper WBC Diamond Belt is on the line though. I almost don't understand how we managed all these years without the clarity of a diamond belt.

Re: Marquez vs. Morales deal reached for April 9th, WBC Diamond Belt at stake as well
I don't know if i'm more upset about them fighting, or upset about them actually paying a fee for the "diamond belt". This fight should have happened years ago, Marquez stops him in 8.

Re: Marquez vs. Morales deal reached for April 9th, WBC Diamond Belt at stake as well
Stupid move on marquez's part if he thinks this fight will get him closer to a third one with pac, on the other hand maybe he's just trying to have a couple big money fights before he goes out, can't blame him his last 10 fights all been against tough dudes.
-
Re: Marquez vs. Morales deal reached for April 9th, WBC Diamond Belt at stake as well
At first I thought this fight was Marquez's admission that his fight career in terms of chasing belts and unifying titles was effectively over, that he just wants to go the Roy Jones and B Hop routes and earn some easy money to finish off his career fighting fellow vets and settling old scores.
But on reflection with Soto, Bradley, Alexander and Khan all comitted to fights it's difficult to see who else he could fight.
There is no higher profile fight out there for him as I see unless he wants to go up to welter weight and I think we all agree that's a bad idea.
Maybe a fight with Guerrero but that is a big risk for little reward imo. Morales will sell a lot more tickets.

I totally agree. If JMM want to make a step fprward to a Pacman fight, he should prepare himself for the fight by moving up to 140. JMM vs MM or Ortiz would be great while it last. Not saying that JMM will be the one standing. ;)

Bradley and Alexander fight this weekend. They would be read for another fight in 90 days time. This is money play. It's fine. I personally think other than Pacquiao, which is also a money play, his career of unifying and taking tough fights is probably over.

I think he realises a third fight with Pac is not going to ever happen. If it was ever going to happen it would have been now, but instead we get Pac-Mosley and JMM-Morales.

Well really, I think a fight with Khan was on the table. He said if not Morales, he'd move up in weight for a 4th weight world title. There was also an offer to fight Berto available too.

Diamond Belt - LightWeight Title don't make sense. This fight is above 135, probably 140 , otherwise the WBC and WBO belts would be on the line. My guess is Marquez couldn't agree with Khan on the him accepting a lower purse split which has been his pattern since 2003. At least he is consistent. No doubt he's getting a much bigger percentage over Morales. Better for Morales at this weight, he may have a chance.

I imagine all 3 will be on the line. Boxrec probably haven't added it because nothing has been said about the other 2 titles. Maybe the WBO/WBA haven't approved Morales for a defense of their titles because he's not part of their rankings at that weight. The fight is at 135lbs.

And what shall be the weight for the clash? I doubt Morales can make the weight for any category where he might still be competitive.

haha...... These belts..... Oh my dear. Sulaiman is hanging on by a thread I guess keeping up with sanction fees via cheeky belts. This fight is total and utter absolute rubbish.

Ah... sorry! guess what dude? There is no Sanctioning Fee for the Diamond Belt. It has no Title significance. It is basically a $50,000 trophy in the form of a belt.
It's actually a nice gift that will come in handy after the fighter blows all his money. He can pawn it first before he starts in on his other belts or use it as a bargaining chip in his divorce. When the first one gets sold well find out if its actually made with moissanite.

I have been big Erick Morales fan, and I was happy when he retired because he was declining. For me the diamond belt just looses credibility because I would expect fighters at the top of their careers fighting for it not when finished.

Erik Morales Signs Contract To Close Marquez Deal - Boxing News
The reason this is for the WBC diamond belt is that the fight is at 140. So Khan vs. Maidana and Bradley vs. Alexander are not diamond belt material fights, but the diamond belt is on the line for 2 fighters who have never had a top fight within the weightclass. What a fucking joke the WBC are. This is a stupid way to crown the 1st mexican 4 division champion, and quite frankly shouldn't count in any record book.

Complete and utter joke man, can't stand this shit. The fight, i'm sure, is at 140 because Morales can't make weight at 135 anymore. This fight absolutely stinks IMHO.

But the WBC daimond belt would probably fetch a good price on ebay.

Re: Marquez vs. Morales deal reached for April 9th, WBC Diamond Belt at stake as well
Why do people continually call the Diamond Belt a Joke? It is not a Title Belt and not meant to be one. It is honorary recognition of two great fighters by the WBC.
It cost $50K to make and will probably carries more tangible value than that. And that is no Joke!
I think too many writers write negative things about this belt and incorrectly label it a "joke title"
-
Re: Marquez vs. Morales deal reached for April 9th, WBC Diamond Belt at stake as well
My question is: Does the Diamond belt count as the 4th title in a different division? If not I don't know why Morales wants this fight. Unless he's really confident, because he should just wait for one of the other titles which he would have a better chance at IMO.

The Diamond belt only counts as a prize and has no ranking value whatsoever.
Isn't it all about the man who beat the man? If Morales beats Marquez even if it's not sanctioned, it's a moral victory, which is becoming if not more credible than the ABC Belt itself. It should put him back on the P4P list but it won't, because everyone will say Marquez got old.

Re: Marquez vs. Morales deal reached for April 9th, WBC Diamond Belt at stake as well
I don't care about what any of you guys say but this fight is appealing to me and hell yea I will be watching.
Two great Mexican fighting to be the first Mexican to gain a 4th division title. Who cares if its a made up title, its still two great fighters fighting for it.

You're kidding right? The reason everyone is mocking it is because if the WBC gave any credence to their regular title, then there would be no need for a diamond belt. This is a shameless PR exercise and nothing more. For gods sake, does boxing really require any more distortion with its friggin champions?
To say this fight deserves diamond status when the best 4 fighters at 140 just fought each other is a joke and has only been awarded because both these guys are Mexican. I'm a huge Marquez fan, but really this is not the way for him to go, and he is much better than this. I can only assume he's gone down this 140 diamond route to have a diamond unification fight with Pacquiao.
Diamond unification...how ridiculous does that sound? How about they have the fight at Welter for the interim diamond championship? What a load of shit.

Exactly why I say incorrectly labeled.
There is no ranking significance. The WBC could have called it a "Diamond Trophy" and they would have avoided confusion.

Erik Morales Signs Contract To Close Marquez Deal
By Jose Antonio Soriano, notifight.com
According to the father of Tijuana's Erik "El Terrible" Morales, both his son and fellow three-time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez, have signed contracts for an all-Mexican clash on April 9 in Las Vegas. The fight between Erik Morales and Marquez will be at junior welterweight (140 pounds) and the Diamond Belt of the World Boxing Council (WBC) will be on the line. The fight between both Mexican fighters was made by Golden Boy Promotions.
"I'm glad that we came to a successful conclusion in our negotiations to carry out this fight," said Jose "Olive Grove" Morales, father and coach of Erik Morales. "Hopefully, both fighters give it a good show and a great fight for the fans. I know that both Erik and Juan Manuel will arrive in perfect condition on the day of the fight. I will do my best for my child to win.
It is expected that Morales will begin training this week at the Otomi Ceremonial Center.

Re: Marquez vs. Morales deal reached for April 9th, WBC Diamond Belt at stake as well
My wish has been granted, this fight is now OFF. I'm over the god damn moon. Marquez will now not waste valuable time during the culmination of his career fighting a Morales way way way past his best and will seek bigger challenges.
What the hell.....
Marquez vs Bradley at 140 anyone. Ha. Maybe Marquez vs Maidana at 140? Or hopefully Marquez vs Guererro....

I guess I did miss something. A fight against Bradley would be an elimantor for Pacman. That's the fight to be made. But we have to remember that Alexander has a rematch clause.

I think the rematch clause is being passed. I'd imagine there's no way Alexander wants a rematch. He didn't even look like he wanted the first fight after about 3 - 4 rounds.

Marquez should call out Khan now.
