Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
I post these threads because it was a curious situation.
When Roy knocked Joe down he didn't go for the ko, why is this? I mean if you watch Roy when joes up it looks like he's thinking of 2 things
-
Re: Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
Calzaghe has excellent recuperative powers, Roy was anxious about gasing.
Roy was an old fighter.

If he could have he would have but Calzaghe was a different animal to anyone he had faced before and he would have always had trouble with him.

Yep, Roy was a whole 3 years older than Joe;D
-
Perhaps Roy should have tried emulating what bhop did because bhops plan was spot on, if it wasn't for bhop being older he may have won it, agree??
I watched jones calzaghe live and was biting my nails and I really thought that if anyone can beat Joe it's got to b Roy but didn't work out! Alot of people slate him and they shouldn't, he beat the necessary people to claim the belts

Different fighters though. Roy was at his peak early,
Joe later.

Abit like the Tyson vs Lewis fight then
-
Re: Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
Knowing you can mentally/physically pull it all together and win and hoping you can still pull it all together and win, is a similarity between Roy and Tyson at hat stage. They tried to talk it up and convince themselves as well as us.
Some people age faster than others and like comets some burn brighter earlier and then burn out a lot quicker.
-
It's a shame though. Same thing happened to been and eubank and guys like Gerald McClellan didn't even get into their careers really.
-
Re: Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
Ive always thought that actually...Jones should have jumped him. Think he was much more shaken then when Hopkins speared him. Jones had done this before, let some off at times but here I think it was more physical them mental.

Physical??? I sometimes think jones got to chummy with Joe whilst co promoting the fight
-
Re: Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
I gotta give Calzaghe his props... In the eventual run of things, it became evident that Enzo Calzaghe isn't at all great as a trainer in many ways. So I have to kinda conclude that Joe was a special talent in his own right.... I think the guy could of seriously benefited from a guy like Freddie Road... I mean, he would of been an absolute sensation with a world class trainer.
Okay so maybe if not just Roach then maybe some xylocaine too ;D

I think he knew he'd tire, Couldnt explode and maybe gun shy if he went hell bent. In past he's just eased up and dominated. Not sure about being buds, wouldnt have mattered. Calzaghe turned the mental game back on both he and Hopkins...didnt fall for it at all.

Yeah, that sums it up.
When Roy fight Tito he had him down a couple times but never once looked like raising the pace. Jones always boxes in his comfort zone but he would have been better suited to go all out when he had Joe hurt because he was never going to have the engine to stay with Joe for 12 rounds. Maybe he thought he could land that shot again.

calzaghi had a couple of off nights early in his reign as he did late, i woulnt say he peaked pretty consistent all the way through his career
he had more defining fights towards the end but imo was no better a fighter
-
Re: Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
Infact he was probably worse because his hands went to shit.

3 yrs in our age....10yrs in fighting age.....:-\
Jones has not been able to be a fight stopper in years....Since before his move to HW....Counting Sheika and lacy in legit stoppages on a world level is silly......Sheika was knocked down 4 times by gust of wind on his way to the arena and Lacy had to have Andrew Hartly removed from his camp as a sparring partner due to Andrew going too rough on him when he was preparing for Roy......
Jones was happy enough to last the Calzaghe fight without being stopped....I think he went into the fight with that mindset

Thing is, if they had fought earlier, Joe may well have sparked Roy. he's just been over here in Guernsey for the channel islands sports personality of the year. He said he couldn't come back because he hates losing weight and he'd have 35lb to lose and that his hands are ruined. He keeps in shape but hasn't touched a punch bag since his last camp because of his hands.
I didn't go up but according to some of the lads, the Joe they saw in real life was huge compared to the fighter they saw on telly. They reckon he was at least 15 stone and my mate is 6 foot but he said Joe was taller than him, even though Joe is down as 5,11".

Really that big?....funny how some guys on TV seem huge then in person seem much smaller then others that seem small are much bigger in person....,Thought TV added 20lbs :D......As far as them meeting earlier and Joe stopping Jones I don't know....Jones in his prime was very skilled athletically and IMo would have found a way to keep away from Joe...Jones never liked a high paced bout and Joe as we all know threw a lot of punches so I really think it would have been a snoozer

When you click it it gets to a normal size pic that you can see clearly...IMO it just looks as if Joe is healthy and is bigger because he is at his walking around weight....Obviously when a guy fights he is 20lbs or so under his normal weight so I would guess that is why.....He retired at LHW so figure he was 175lbs for that bout and he was in shape so he probably shed 15lbs in camp giving him a walking around weight of about 190......

Well apparently he stood on the scale mucking about and it flew over 200lb;)
The big ginger lad on his right weighed in at 106 kilo for his fight last friday night, that gives you a bit of a comparrison, size wise.

Do I hear comeback at CW :o.......
Seriously though good to see Joe is out and about doing well.....I do wish Joe and Froch could have met before joe retired so we would not have to hear Carl's constant bitching about why the people do not show him the love they showed Joe

Re: Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
Incidentaly, the lad stood behind Joe with the gold trim shorts is last years ABA junior lightweight champ.

Re: Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
Roy was extremely fortunate and had that exit to greatness on the inside of his forearm :p
All joking aside, the irony is that he cracked Joe in the chops with the inside of his wrist/forearm.. Joe was on Queer street and hurt, I venture to say the majority of our friends across the pond were shatting themselves
And if Roy didnt have duck tape holding his guts and psyche together he should have pressed, a couple of solid shots would have done the trick... Roy still had more than enough physically just nothing left in the head, shorts and chest..
Along with Joes recuperative powers, something should be said about his will to win and confidence. I also gotta believe that when Roy didnt follow up one bit after the knockdown that Joe knew the fight was his, hence the clowning and putting his face in Roys guard multiple times.. Shame on Roy really, I look at guys who are old and past it, fight for all the wrong reasons and perhaps cant let the sport go but they still have the fighters heart and pride. Roy still thinks he is superman and Mr. Untouchable and when he had to make a statement or press past athletisicm and let it hang out and seize greatness he didnt have the guts, he was scared to take a chance, scared to get knocked out again...
It really showed me a lot, because when Roy couldnt outspeed a guy or out power him he didnt try... When Roy fought Trinidad he looked fast, crisp and strong..Why??? becuase he was willing to risk more against a guy who was smaller, and slower..
He had his oppurtunity with Joe, Calzaghe dared him, he clowned, he quietly questioned Roys manhood that night over and over. The biggest embarrasment was that Joe carried Roy the last quarter of the fight, thats all on Roy not Joe. Calzaghe was in a sense showing a measure of respect but a guy like Hopkins, Holyfield, Toney would have never allowed it
I would love to see Joe Vs Bute
-
Re: Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
Roy did try to land bombs after the forearm smash knockdown. But he was met by Calzaghe unleashing two fisted mental combos. By the 2nd round Roy's best punches were having the same effect as Powderpuff Paulie's would on Calzaghe.

it is the biggest load of poo ive ever heard tho soz ;)

Re: Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
Jones has never liked to take risks.
Unless a fighter is out on there feet Jones is likly to hold back rather than just go for it.
Type of fighter that looks for opening then fires quick shots in rather than force opening.

Yes Jones wanting to go in and be happy surviving against Calzaghe was Poo:rolleyes:....HMM lets examine this further shall we.....
RJJ Avoided Calzaghe in his prime years,,,,,,
RJJ Self stated during his time calling the Calzaghe/Hopkins fight when asked by Lampley and Merchant why he never fought Calzaghe when Jones said he wanted to face the winner of Calzaghe/Hopkins....."it was too much of a risk, I had too much to lose, If I went to England like they proposed More then likely I would have lost my belt, When they offered to come here I felt I did not need to take the risk because I had the titles and did not need Calzaghe at the time, I have nothing to lose now and I would be happy just to get the bout, but I prefer to face Bernard then Joe".......
Sounds like a confident man
Jones had beaten Ajamu, Hanshaw and Trinidad by points lost 3 of the prior bouts 2 by horrific stoppage losses.....Jones last stoppage win before Calzaghe came in 2002....Going into the bout with Jones Calzaghe was on a 5 fight win streak over Lacy, Bika, Manfredo, Kessler and Hopkins...
Tell me it is crazy to thinnk Jones was happy surviving?......Calzaghe mocked him during the fight!!!!.....Jones was not even a shadow of his formerself in the bout past the 3rd rd......No big deal knocking Calzaghe down because joe has been down more times then a dime store hooker......Thing is keeping Joe Down....So no it is not poo to think Jones went into the fight happy to survive and just wanted to make a good showing of himself

Yeah see when you say stuff like that it tells me and everyone who is a Vet of these boards your lack of knowledge on the sport itself....Big difference betweeen knowing who is who and knowing what is what....
Fighters age differently skill wise then regular people....Why do fighters not fight until they are 50etc (Though now a few here and there do but no more really then back in the days...Moore fought til he was in his 40's as did Walcott)......A fighters in ring reflexes go sooner....EG the last thing to go is the punch.....They may still be faster then the average guy but slower then the average elite fighter......
A fighter who is known for his toughness gets stopped once and all of a sudden he is an easy KO for guys in the future why because they just had one too many wars and a dent was put in their armor....They can still take a punch better then the average guy but not better then the average elite fighter (A perfect exmple of the is John Mugabi and most recently Edison Miranda)......
Anyhow the lesson is over and maybe now you understand WTF 3 of our yrs 10 in fighters years...You know like a dog...they really don't get 7yrs older every yr but their body ages 7 yrs in terms of what it would take a persons body to age
-
Re: Calzaghe vs jones knockdown
Yeah, of course Calzaghe was far far better at the time.
But on the age/years topic, you have to bare in mind the years grueling fights at top level take off you, which Roy had for years. No dig at Calzaghe at all, as careers just went in different ways, but I believe that to be partially why Roy was so drained towards the end. Then the example of B-Hop just proves what was said by the last poster right, every fighter ages differently.
