Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
That was very hard to watch....

Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
He needs to think about his health and his family now and get out before he's permanently hurt. It's sad to watch

Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
I just got up and didn't see the fight. Pretty amazed it took Lebedev ten rounds to stop Roy.
From reading the posts on the fight it sounded pretty bad though.

Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
9 rounds 2 minutes 45 seconds.....

Personally I had it 87-84 Lebedev going into the final round. Lebedev won 5 rounds clearly, and Jones won 1 clearly the other 3 rounds were close enough to give to whomever smelled nicer.
RJJ showed if he still had his youth, he would have mopped the floor. He was even able to rock Lebedev once with a beautiful right hook, left hook combo. This is dangerous, because in RJJ's eyes he still felt competitive, which means he's going to search for that career close victory. Honestly if Leb would have pressed more early it would have ended early.

Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
Looking at it again, Smoger was a bit slow to react there he was out on his feet and took a good handful of big shots which he should not have.

Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
it honestly brings tears to my eyes

Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
That last punch seemed unnecessary.

Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
The most harmful thing that came of that is that he went rounds and saw ghosts of what he once was. He'll sell his legacy and name again to some other individual who wouldn't be fit to park his car in his prime...and again he'll take punches and get damaged.
Sorry folks but it's a slow motion train wreck and gotta refuse to think anything positive about his showing. It's fooking sad man!

Sadly it is also the history of most great fighters who stepped into the ring. Only a few have ever known when it was time to go.

Roy will fight again. He just likes to do it!

completely agree, IMO it was a classless move by Lebedev
it only takes one punch to permanently end a man's life or to leave him like McClellan is today, Smoger was already stepping between the two when he chose to let another one loose and it was more than clear that Jones was out cold

Absolutly. Hardest thing to understand are past 'greats' who have mad hand over fists the mega paydays that other no hopers would KILL to just make one of. Guys who know only the role of "opponent" and go far to long, but have no where near the high profile for fans to call em out. Jones, Holyfield are cursed by fame... terrible investments and a great dose of ego I believe.
The way Jones is reacting to punches is ever lasting, looks like Vivian Harris. No excuse for it.

I'm not sure what Lebedev is supposed to do. He turns to Smoger and shrugs and Smoger doesn't dive in. Isn't it his job to keep punching?

Yeah, I don't think it was Lebedev's fault per-se, I think it was more on Smoger. I would have likely to see Lebedev hold up there, but he's in the heat of the moment and you don't stop punching until the other guy is on the mat or the ref stops it. He was just doing his job.

Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
the rumor going around a few months ago was Roy is broke. How he spent all the money he made is beyond me, but if true, it is very sad.
He already likely is going to suffer later in life because of all the head trauma he suffered in the past 6-7 years. Without any money, he won't even be able to enjoy the few decent years he has before he is suffering physically.
When any good-great fighter gets out with their marbles relatively entact then it is a good day for a boxing fan. The best one can hope for is a guy like De La Hoya, who didn't take a ton of punishment to end his career (getting smacked around by Pac was much better for him than alot of the brutal beatings we see most very good to great fighters take at the end).

thing is Smoger was already stepping in between the two, either way the stoppage was bad and it went too long

Agree on all points. Smoger was uncharacteristically indecisive there. Could it have been because he couldn't see Jones' eyes he didn't really know Jones' condition?

You'd think that he'd be able to make a decent living doing broadcasting. He's great at it.

Add to that the after dinner gigs, they paid six figure sums over in the uk the legends of the past. RJJ was over here doing a couple recently.
I think a man with a name and past of Roy Jones can easily make a very good living maybe not the money he had in the past but live a luxury lifestyle compared to most.

It looked to me like Smoger hesitated. He jumped in and took a look at Jones, but he didn't wave it off. Lebedev looked confused, like he thought Smoger was going to stop it and then threw a punch when he didn't.

Who knows... You'd think he'd be quick to stop it given Jones' recent history, but maybe he wanted to give the old fighter the benefit of the doubt?

Maybe it's a combination of him being broke, relatively speaking, and being in love with the spotlight.

Without a doubt.

Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
Smoger's indicisiveness caused that final punch.
Lebedev has a habit of destroying floundering careers. Ask Enzo Macarinelli.
-
Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
Fxcking Smoger stupid ass! Can't blame Lebedev for that last punch, moron Smoger wouldn't stop the fight until Roy hits the ground.
Fight should of been stop 3 punches ago!

Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
by the way - you will probably get a bollocking for giving away the fight result (more or less) in your title
because some people come on boxing sites wven when they are trying to avoid fight results ;)
there's another thread that even says he was kayoed - will tell them off too ;)

I think Smoger was half convinced (somehow ???) that Jones jr was playing possum

Sorry about that, I would have normally put "spoiler" in the thread, but I was mixed in emotion. It's very hard to watch because Jones became safety first after watching his friend GMAN's career end because of the war with Benn. Now if he doesn't stop he will have permanent damage. Hopefully not as bad as Gman.
-
Im a big rj fan..but he looked out of shape and finished..and how did he blow all hhis
Money?!!
-
Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
RJJ isn't broke. That's just what everyone assumes when they continue to fight past an obvious retirement date. It's just what they do.
-
Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
Since Jones isn't going to stop fighting on his own accord.... it's up to the licensing authorities to keep him from getting into a ring again.... for his own good. Amazing how even the thought of brain damage later in life doesn't deter someone like Jones, who has fighting in his blood. People around him have to protect him from himself. He's even endangering his commentating career.
-
Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
Man i feel for Jone fans i mean i am Holyfeild fan and that shit just getting old.
-
Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
Jones probably got another $1,000,000 or so for fighting Lebedev in Moscow, and as long as Jones is still considered a "big name" and keeps getting that kind of money, he'll continue to fight. In a way you can't blame him, but sadly he's only a punch or 2 from becoming a veggie.
-
Re: Can we please please keep roy away from a ring!!!!
 can't watch this anymore...
