Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
In a time when we question everyone about PED's, Pacqauio, Mosley, Hopkins, we don't think about past fighters having freakish physiques.
Personally, I think Bruno had a tremendous natural build and did not need to take steroids.
Still, when he fought Tyson the second time, he was 6'3" 247 lbs of muscle. :o
Thoughts ?

Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
I think that it´s impossible to compeat at such level and not taking some PED´s. It is not all about muscle size or strenght, but recovery! How do you think it´s possible to train 4 times per day for so long and not overtraining?

Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
Bruno is a gym rat. He is still in the gym at 06:30 every morning even now at 49 years old and is absolutely ripped. I'd be hugely surprised if he ever took anything.

This. It's like asking questions over how 5'10 Mike Tyson could be 225lbs of pure muscle. Bruno had good power, but his shocking stamina indicates he could've done with some extra help

Gym rats make up the majority of steroid users FACT. Not saying he was but if hes 49 and still pretty muscular than there is a big chance hes on the gear. Once you get that old your test levels start to drop and it makes keeping muscle and building muslce extremely hard. I know some guys who are 55 and still quite muscular...and they are on the gear and quite knowledgeable when it comes to bodybuilding so I would think if they could do it without the gear they would.

His stamina wouldnt of been helped by the muscle. When you have that much muscle on you it takes a whole lot more oxygen to keep you going. Its why you see guys like Todd Duffee, Shane Carwin, Bobby Lashley having trouble lasting a couple of round in the UFC coz they have so much muscle and its hard for them to keep the oxygen flowing. I know myself (im 96kilos and 13% bodyfat) that my cardio went down when I put on more muscle, one would be coz i stopped doing cardio so often but also coz I am much bigger than I was. These days I have picked cardio back up again but even with the same amount of training that I used to do, I still struggle with what I used to do easily.

Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
Some great posts there Snakey !
Bruno's physique was so over the top that it makes you wonder if he took anything. And if he still looks like close to that today then it really makes you wonder.
Which if he is taking it today and NOT competing anymore then that is his business and I have no problem with it.

Found some pics from the Haye-Harrison fight

You can't tell much from that, but I fail to see anything in his fighting history that suggests he was on steroids. His entire amateur & pro career he was a massive puncher with serious stamina & chin issues. He happened to have a great physique, but aside from that & the power what else is there to suggest he was on anything?
I mean where do we go from this? Was Mike Tyson on the gear? Was Ken Norton? Let's face it one of the most notable steroid users of recent times was James Toney & he looked like Jabba The Hutt.

Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
Bruno LOOKED great, but his performances were not exceptional or out of the ordinary. I see no reason to suspect him, nothing in his history suggests PED cheat.

Steroids dont turn you into pac, mayweather, ali, tyson etc It all depends on the kind of training you use them with. If your using steroids and just pumping the weights then your going to end up quite muscular but thats about it. If your doing explosive exercises and lots of cardio then youll find you will run faster and get stronger which would be more appropriate for a boxer. Bruno could of been on the gear but may of done the wrong training with it. Or maybe he was on roids just for the physique or maybe he wasnt on roids at all and had good genetics. BUT if he stills looks good and big then I would still be quite surprised if he wasnt using something like HGH or steroids.

Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
Bruno was just a fighter who trained too much with weights which led to his lack of stamina. Other fighters have good physiques such as Seldon, who was the black Hercules Weaver? Norton, Holyfield does not mean they took steroids.
-
Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
He never had to pass a random blood test so who knows.....
Steroids were more detactable and less advanced back then than they are now.

Yeah exactly. He could of been a guy who just pumped weights religiously and this would explain his cardio. Coz to be honest, the best way to put on mass is to limit cardio coz if your diet and supps arent planned properly you can counter act the mass building process. Not to say you cant do cardio and build mass, you just gotta do it right.

Its also easy to get FAT ! ;D
Especially for some of us who are not genetically cut to begin with.
Gaining muscle mass is a tricky thing to do.

Yeah true but as long as you diet properly you shouldnt get too fat. Putting on some fat while gaining muscle is going to happen no matter what but you can control how much fat you do put on. Your going to put on less fat if your eating lean meats and veges and consuming lots of protein than you would if your bulking dirty with junk food and veges like potatos and heaps of carbs.

Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
Bruno's stomach muscles used to pop out, they were unbelievably defined. Never seen that in any other boxer. It was way too much muscle.
-
Check him out in the Lewis fight, his arms were bigger than my head!
-
Towards the end of his career Bruno had a belly like the UFC guy with the mo-hawk and goatee. It was a bit of a bloated belly but with a six pack showing... Bruno's belly was a lot flatter in his younger years, i'm thinking the reason his weight went up was not as much to do with muscle mass as it was brown stew chicken & festivals.

You know I've always found that funny that you can look like your 3 months pregnant but still have a 6 pack.

Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
What about Gary Mason, seem to remember him being shredded? The muscle mass would seemingly work against you. American James Pritchard was buffed up, didn't pan out to well for him.

Shannon Briggs is also a good example of this.
I've seen him come in at near 270 lbs and still look pretty ripped.

It's odd that (the six pack over flab) because I always thought you couldn't see a six pack unless you had under a certain percentage of body fat?

I like Frank Bruno and said I believe he was all natural.
I simply raised the question due to his impressive physique.
Job Biscuit (nobody knows what it means and they no longer care)

Yup very true. A 6 pack can be an unhealthy thing to have. People never seem to realise that the more defined the abs the more weight drained a fighter actually is. Chris Arreola doesn't have to worry about that anytime soon.

Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
George Foreman, Earnie Shavers and Ken Norton had huge muscle mass, only Norton was ripped. Doubtful any of them took steroids.
-
For the record, I don't think Bruno was a cheat. He was too nice a guy.

Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
I think Bruno had a natural low body fat and as has been mentioned he loved the gym.
Nothing in his history to even sugest he has used steroids.
-
Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
Incocent until proven guilty or until Flloyd Mayweather makes accusations, whichever one comes first.

Re: Was Frank Bruno on steroids ?
I can't believe how many people are niave enough to state, without a doubt in their mind, that he never used steroids.
It doesn't matter how disciplined a person is or how much a gym rat they are, it's EXTREMELY hard to put on and maintain huge muscle mass while simultaneously going through the kind of cardiovascular exercise that a professional boxing training camp puts you through. ESPECIALLY the amount of bulk that Bruno had.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a conviction. Bruno could have been a genetic freak who packs on muscles lifting his remote to change channels (they are out there).
But for people to come in here and say "no he's no cheat - he's too nice of a guy" or "no he was just a gym rat"... how niave can you be?
