Was this a better version Glen Johnson than the 3rd Clinton Woods fight?
Because if it wasn't then Froch's win isn't very impressive and I fear for him against Ward :-\

I don't know why Froch started so slowly, he seemed to respect Johnson a little too much, but take away the first few rounds and I think Froch dominated the fight, it was that really slow start that made it closer than it should have been. He definitely cannot afford to do this again against Ward. He needs to impose himself and make sure he isn't playing catchup because Ward seems a bit more canny than Taylor and is clearly far younger than Johnson.

I don't know what people expect from him though. He is what he is. He was never going to box Johnson's head off, because Johnson is too busy and too savvy to let that happen. And he presses hard. Froch was on a hiding to nothing with this fight really and i suspect he's just glad to get the win.
Froch's going to be one of those fighters who will always be in close fights. He makes too many technical errors and loses his concentration too much to thoroughly dominate a world class level opponent.
Still love him though. Proper fighter.

Re: Was this a better version Glen Johnson than the 3rd Clinton Woods fight?
I'll tell you this much...
It's gonna take a lot more than what he did last night to beat Ward.
Credit where credit is due, Froch is the kind of fighter whos willing to step in and fight anyone and you gotta respect that but for my likings all this hands to the side and one punch here one punch there. Quick flurry that hit the opponents guard can only take you so far.
I feel that Ward will walk away with the decision based on cleaner punching and ring generalship. I think Ward will close out strong dictating the pace of the fight.

Re: Was this a better version Glen Johnson than the 3rd Clinton Woods fight?
It is amazing to me that Froch is as successful as he has been. He slaps with just about every punch, and he wings that uppercut from a mile away with his chin in the air. He does two things in particular that should get him knocked out, if he is ever in with a decent fighter: he walks in the ring, crossing his feet and actually walking when in range, and he regularly steps through with his right foot when he throws his right hand. Botha used to do the same thing, and it cost him many times.
Johnson hasn't got much. He missed many opportunities because his feet were often together when he should've been punching; he walks too. And with his gloves so high and tight, it takes him too long to get off any way.

Kess beat him convincingly IMO... I had the fight 116-112.
I think both Bute & Ward have the ring smarts to take advantage of his mistakes.

Wins over Pascal, Taylor, Abraham and Johnson suggest he's already dealt with decent fighters.

Re: Was this a better version Glen Johnson than the 3rd Clinton Woods fight?
Truthfully, Johnson has been on the slide since the first Chad Dawson fight. So no it's a poorer version. All that said, I would definitely argue that Froch did better than Woods did against Johnson in any of their fights.

To all posts!!!!
Let's b honest froch wasn't at his usual pace just as Glen wasn't.

Re: Was this a better version Glen Johnson than the 3rd Clinton Woods fight?
Wins over Pascal, Taylor, Dirrell, Abraham, Johnson, and a FOTY with Kessler (and that fight was razor close), and people are still so critical of Froch. When he faces a decent fighter.... All the guys on that list were better than decent.
Yes, he does some things wrong. But who cares!!!! He makes up for it with heart. He comes to fight and when faced with adversity he doesn't cave.
Ward beats him but Froch is going to give it his all.

This post is confusing Jazster.
1. Johnson was a better fighter when losing to Woods.
2. Froch did better than Woods although he lost (according to you) against a worst version of Johnson.

froch had am off night, or maybe johnson just made it duifficult
if froch has another off night he will probably lose to ward, but if ward has an off night he will lose to froch
in any case these are the 2 best super middles in the world and im looking foward to it

Ok, let me clarify. I believe Johnson was a better fighter then, but I also felt that Woods benefitted from being on home turf in all 3 fights. I thought he lost both the 1st & 2nd quite convincingly & the 3rd could've gone either way. Although I had the Froch-Johnson fight a draw, the reason that Froch was losing rounds was his own laziness in rounds 1-3 & 6-8. He didn't bother doubling up the jab or if he did he was in reverse so it wouldn't land. He seemed happy to only throw punches after Johnson had landed a hard shot. On a round by round it was even, but I reckon the overall feeling of the fight if you weren't scoring it was that Froch won if you get my drift. When he did step it up as he did in rounds 4,5 & 9-12 he showed how easy he could make it for himself. This also cost him badly in the Kessler fight where he let rounds slip away from him.

Re: Was this a better version Glen Johnson than the 3rd Clinton Woods fight?
The 3rd Woods fight went pretty much the same as this, except Woods had the 'luxury' of knowing Johnson more than well enough. Woods put up the big drive at the end of that fight but was a little lucky on the cards imo. Anyway I actually think Johnson hasn't looked all that different from 2007 to 2011 but the work rate was maybe a little lower in the Froch fight but the skills are still as prevalent.

I get your drift. Woods lost the first two but won the third fair and square. Real close fight could have gone either way.
I agree Froch definitely beat Johnson more convincingly... even though you don't think he won (;D).
Jimbo - I agree Johnson hasn't looked much different for the past 100 years. No-one has ever schooled him apart from B-Hop and Ottke.

Re: Was this a better version Glen Johnson than the 3rd Clinton Woods fight?
Please, who looks good or premiere against Johnson. Name two in the last decade? Hell, name one. Having said that, I'm hard pressed to find him a round in the fight. And the announcers my lord. Every time Johnson blinked their was raised volume and an exclamation point. Froch kicked his ass. That 114/114 card was hysterical.

Re: Was this a better version Glen Johnson than the 3rd Clinton Woods fight?
Johnson was a lot better and busier against Woods, Tarver and Jones, that was his “Indian summer”. Since then he has not fought at the same intensity and aggression. He had his hand up but was not punching enough with his forward movement. Froch cannot change enough to beat Ward who is an all round complete fighter. He will out box Froch, he has better speed, boxing ability and timing. The only way Froch can win is if he starts early, tries to pressure Ward, hurts Ward early and gets Andre to be negative, which I do not see happening.
What will happen to Froch after he loses to Ward, he will have no title and no big fighter will want to fight him?
-
Re: Was this a better version Glen Johnson than the 3rd Clinton Woods fight?
I watched the fight twice. Did anyone else get the feeling that Froch was rather jittery in the early going? The first 3-4 rounds seemed like he was trying to adjust to the mental pressure that is there when you fight Johnson (as Johnson is going to be in pretty close and you can't really back him off very easily).
Against Ward he has to be ready and not give away early rounds.

Re: Was this a better version Glen Johnson than the 3rd Clinton Woods fight?
Froch and Kessler. Froch may have lost a razor close fight, but he seemed to win the war.
Kessler had to take alot of time to recover while Froch soldiered on for an impressive win against Abraham where he displayed better than expected boxing skills and a tough win over Johnson where he showed his great chin and brass balls.

If he loses to Ward (big chance imo unfortunately) then a move up to light heavy to face Nathan Cleverly would be a big draw in the UK. Especially if Cleverly can hang on to his strap. Makes sense.
