Has there ever been an openly gay boxer?
Bit of an odd question but hear me out. Im sure there must have been some secretly gay boxers but has there been any openly gay?
I was recently reading a book called 'Looking for a fight' by David Matthews (excellent book I highly recommend it). Its a first person account that follows David Matthews himself (he is a journalist by trade) and he decides to become a professional boxer to find out from the inside about the business, with no prior boxing/sporting experience at the age of 31. He trains at the gym where Clinton Woods trains and Woods was saying that if there were a gay boxer he'd have a massive huge following and loads of fans due to the gay community. Got me wondering, has there ever been a gay boxer?

Re: Has there ever been an openly gay boxer?
Floyd Mayweather jr should come out of the closet soon

this guy was openly bisexual. He fought guys like Carlos Monzon and Luis Manuel Rodriguez

That's the right name but he wasn't "openly" anything. At least not during his fighting days He lived almost all his life in a sad denial.
Here's a pretty good short bio of Griffith and the issue http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vau...56/1/index.htm

Outside of Griffth, Haye and Mayweather, I can't think of any gay boxers. :lolhaha:

Re: Has there ever been an openly gay boxer?
I remember Joe Louis said something like Rocky Marciano was a closet-h0mo. Clinching and tapping dat azz for his pleasure. :lickish:

Not saying he is but there was that one very odd pic of marquez a while back hehe. I just think you're not going to find any since certain opponents would have a field day with it.

There had to be some questions about Chop Chop Corley. He's big into wearing women's lingerie...I remember Floyd taunting him before their fight.

Chop Chop said he wore women's underwear for the comfort. He has 7 kids, so at the very least he pretends to be straight quite often. ;)

I stand corrected...but he was the only one I could think of.

Re: Has there ever been an openly gay boxer?
Good post by Maui, makes a change someone contributing something they actually know something about these days ;D
Griffith was thought to be gay for his whole career, did deny it continually (maybe even to himself) I belive that Benny Paret called him a 'maricon' (gay) during the build up to their fight in which Griffith effectively killed him.
He was killed when he was attacked after leaving a gay club, so he's the most likely candidate I can think of.
Statistically (if you assume a constant %) many boxers we know will have been gay ...... but I'm not sure, as a certain type of person tends to be attracted and suitable to be a fighter and it might be more possible that high testosterone , aggressive types become boxers. Still, I dont really know.

Re: Has there ever been an openly gay boxer?
i think this thread shows exactly why any closet boxers would be apprehensive about coming out.

I really doubt that Marciano was a homo, or that Louis would say that about him.

Mike Tyson (when he was in prison) probably did some gay stuff. Tommy Morrison has the HIV so he might be one of those merry fornicators.Im just kidding by the way. But im pretty sure "Hurricane" Peter Mcnealy was a gay retard.

Re: Has there ever been an openly gay boxer?
Emile Griffith survived that attack X but yeah I mean I don't think Griffith himself has acknowledged the fact publicly that he's gay but yeah he has like a 'partner', it's all covered in the great 'Ring of Fire' documentary.

Rather than gay Graham and Eubanks have effeminate qualities.

Poor Yusaf Mack had to pretend he was drugged when it was discovered he was gay.
Orlando Cruz is still the only openly gay boxer.

Is Orlando still going at it? Not gay sex, but boxing. Or I guess both

;D Still gay, I would assume. And yeah... still boxing too. I went to see his 2nd to last fight against Lamont Roach back in April..... and just this month he was kayoed by countryman Jayson Velez. Not sure how long before he calls it a day (in boxing, I mean).

Irish fighter Gerald Fitzpatrick was openly gay

What about Patrick Fitzgerald?

Re: Has there ever been an openly gay boxer?
Yusuf Mack was a pretty funny case. I guess he'd already stopped boxing and needed the money, but how could you honestly be in a gay porn and expect to keep that under wraps 😁 having 10 kids without ever being married and secretly gay is also quite something....

Re: Has there ever been an openly gay boxer?
Orlando Cruz is still getting pounded, inside and out of the ring ;D
